Notes/Commercial Description:
Traditionally, this full-bodied brown ale was brewed to nourish monks during their Lenten fast. The incorporation of Belgian candi syrup as well as the yeast strain employed give this beer its authentic flavor.

Donna (the day bartender) said I'd like this. It was OK. A nice red/brown color with a minimal head. It had a malty, dark fruit aroma. It tasted mostly of cherries. I thought it was pretty good, but not as deep or complex as a Belgian style dubbel. Just a little bit on the thin side, and the tastes didn't go off in my mouth as I thought they should.

I didn't remember reviewing this beer previously when I had it last week at The Brewery. This time around I loved it. It doesn't at all resemble what I first reviewed 2+ years ago. It was a dark brown/red color with a minimal head. Sweet aroma of fruit and honey. The taste was moderately sweet, honey and raisins. Very smooth and fairly rich. I like this version.

Surpised to see it on tap, thinking of getting a growler of it. Nice amber color, semi-sweet smooth taste. I found no "sour" or off tastes to it. I asked the barkeep about the ABV, but she had no idea. Great beer, but I would definitely like to know the ABV.

Served on tap at the brewery on 4/26/11

Pours a hazy amber colored body. Moderaltey sized sticky beige head with plenty of retention.

Aroma is notably fruity and sweet upfront. Also notable is a yeasty spice character.

Fruitiness on that palate could best be described as apples and raisins. Candi syrup sweetness is balanced out by clove and maybe corriander for a spice note. Finishes with just a kiss of grassy hop flavor.

Sticky and slightly chewy medium body mouthfeel. Overall, a very enjoyable dubbel not too far off from some of the best from Belgium.

Well, the PRUNE's were in MA recently and wanted to meet halfway for dinner... We decided on the Portsmouth Brewery and it was a lucky thing, I suppose!

Appearance: I was a bit shocked that they served a Dubbel in a standard bar pint and said as much to our server who didn't seem to care one bit. Sigh! Anyway, it was dark amber, quite clear with a smallish (1/2") very dense creamy head that was quite long-lasting.
I'll just skip the smell - I just get so carried away before a new beer that I jump right in! But I'm sure that it didn't smell awful or anything!
So, really, how did it taste? Pretty good :) Let's just put taste and feel in here together... It's a bit sweet, creamy, buttery, smooth, gentle, nice, quiet, subdued, full... Little to no hop flavor noted. Very smooth and even aftertaste - no surprises, no off flavors. A fine brew!
And on drinkability, well, I had my limit on this and talked a few others into trying it as well!
A nice, easy to drink brew now that it's not so darned hot out!

cheers!

22oz bottle recently bought from the Portsmouth Brewery store.

Pours a murky brown color with hints of dark reddish tints, very small head that fades fast.

Smell is light but had the typical estery belgian notes.

Taste is wow, lots of banana and bubblegum with this dubbel, probably the most I've had from the style, the banana being a little more pronounced, decent malt backbone, not overly candied like some, seems rather slick and buttery compared to other beers from Portsmouth.

A good dubbel, certainly hides the strength fairly well.

Thanks to warriorsoul for the trade...
Appears a chestnut tone with a small beige head that fades into a mild cap and collar. Scattered lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of caramel, estery yeast, candy sugar, bread, sugar, toffee, raisins, and plums.
Taste is of the same aromas but more subdued with sweet raisin bread as the standout flavor.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, yeasty, semi-sweet, with cocoa dusting, and a lightly fizzy finish.

Poured a nice ruby color with barely no head. It did show some pretty good lacing however.

Smell was kind of sweet. Maybe some raisin and some other dark fruits.

Taste was amazing. Sweet but not over the top. again raisins and some light alcohol notes as well.

This is highly drinkable. Before I knew it I drank half my growler

Pours a dark ruby with a little hit. The smell is one of sweetness--both dark and tart fruits. The taste includes fruits as well as some molasses, raisins, and a bit of roasted malt. The body is medium and sweet, with a little bit of tartness coming in. Drinkability takes a little hit, as this one is a little too sweet, but overall a very nice representation of the style.

Tap at brew pub

Big fluffy head, light lacing, dark maroon copper brown color, clear.

Nose dark belgian malts, light herbal phenolic like aroma, sweet malts, hint of candi sugar, light herbal hops, sweet candy.

Taste sweet toasty darker malts, light herbal hops, sweet candy and candi sugar, bit gritty, touch of warming booze and light phenolic, finishes little sweet, some herbal hops, bit boozy,

Mouth is a bit heavier bodied with decent carb and bit warming booze.

Overall good, not great, herbal hops and phenols kill me, but otherwise great flavors.

$4 bomber? sold.

rusty and clear, resting atop is a spherical jungle of escaped gas baddies. slight haze pond dwells amidst the orbs. no real lacing, no carbonation evident. thin, bony skeleton of a dubbel.. appearancewise. but..

i can smell it from here. banana bread and brown sugar infused phenols drift off the surface like aromatic clouds of beauty. burnt sugar and sweet apple nectar are easily detectable once my nose enters the glass-space. the whole thing is encapsulated by the most modest hint of trappist yeast smoothness. this beer smells perfect. i want this beer as an air freshener. not for my car though, they'll think im drunk when they pull me over.

substantial body and mouthfeel are surprising, yet welcome, after initial visual inspection. grainy and toasty, something about this beer reminds me of eating quaker oat squares cereal. that's actually exactly what this beer tastes like, if you enjoy a healthy dose of brown sugar, caramel, and a deep assortment of ripe berries atop that diabetes disaster. so smooth. rich and flavorful, an almondy nuttiness emerges with warmth. the beer flows effortlessly from good flavor to good flavor, without excessively tanged yeast, excessive sweetness, or anything else wrong. damned if this isn't one of the finest american abbey styles to come along in recent memory.

kudos. highly recommended.

Picked it up at the brewery after dinner one evening. Had it on tap and can't wait to try it in the bottle. Amazing on tap so I'm expecting big things.

A: Pours a reddish bronze color. Almost an ocean spray plumcrangrape juice color. Nice retention on all sides with a one finger white head. lacing like crazy.
S: Sweet caramel and dark fruit notes. Sugary aromas overtake the senses and make the nostrils tickle. Takes on a slightly spicy character due to the high abv. Plum fruit notes that have a nutty side to them. Also a bit wheaty with slight banana bread notes.
T/M: Dark fruit of cherries, plums, and some banana flavors. Sugary sweetness that's thick enough to use as glue. Fruit flavors are present at first leading into a sugary finish and slightly wheaty aftertaste. Extra smooth as it glides across the palate. Very well balanced with each flavor claiming center stage to sport their unique characteristics. Smooth and utterly
D: The aroma is a bit more potent but every flavor detected in the smell can be detected in the taste. What a phenomenal tasting brew. This brew was great on tap and equally a good in the bottle. The flavors become more complex as it warms up a bit. Better to have this sitting at room temp and cooling it for ten minutes instead of having it in the fridge and letting it warm. Get it if you can. It will not disappoint.

22 fl oz brown bottle; served in a goblet.

Thin amber with a ruby hue. Frothy, white head that quickly evaporates to a small pool of bubbles. Minor spotted lacing with average strength.

Caramelized brown sugar and sweet molasses. Plum, raisin, light orange, and alcohol-soaked apple and grape. The alcohol presence is sweet and spicy with a brief cinnamon dryness.

Sweet molasses with a refined, slightly dry toffee and brown sugar. Vinous, aged fruit; rounded with a soft semi-sweet alcohol flavor: raisin, orange, grape, and apple. Notes of sweet spice with a lingering dryness and aftertaste of fruity esters.

Medium in body; creamy, somewhat active, and slightly dry. A well rounded balance texture.

Nice balanced flavors and a mellow body. A tough style outside of Belgium that Portsmouth pulls off remarkably well.

A super bowl payoff from jrdegriselles. Nice.

And a nice beer too – Good looking oaken mahogany with a small ivory head. Aroma was reserved, just subtle notes of sweet molasses and malt. Tons of spices pop up in the taste, quite a load of pepper mixed in with the Belgium yeast and sugar cane. Dry & crisp, sharp and tangy – it made for a nice afternoon on the deck while enjoying the world.
