A dark straw golden ale utilizing the tantalizing whole grains of wild rice to create a nut like character. The use of sterling hops help add a cherry flavor to this light bodied, crisp ale.

On-tap 6/24/08 at the brewpub, served in a US tumbler pint glass.
A: The beer is a light gold color, with a short white head that fades quickly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.
S: The aroma is of pale hops and citrus, with a little wheat and light malts.
T: The taste is hoppy and bitter up front with a light rice and citrus sweetness. The malt character is thin. The after-taste is bitter. It was described as "a wild rice wheat beer" by the waitstaff but it tastes more like an IPA or APA as I didn't really taste much rice or wheat.
M: Crisp with a little smoothness, light body, medium carbonation, finish is very dry.
D: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, mild kick, intrigue made me try it but it's not good enough compared to Portsmouth's other beers to make me want to drink it again.

Poured in a pint glass in the brewpub:
A bright, straw yellowed colored brew, rather cloudy. Not a ton of head.
The smell is that of yeasty hefeweizen, lots of esters and some barnyard straw.
The flavor is quite nice, sweet wheat bread, fruit ester, and funky saison like qualities as well. Finishes with a nice dryness on the finish to keep things balanced
Overall the beer drinks very smooth and is a highly enjoyable "saison" like beer. If available, would certainly drink this beer again.

not my favorite, a funny brew from Portsmouth with black rice. the beer pours a cloudy maple syrup color, almost not carbonated at all, no head to speak of. the nose is nutty like almonds, apparently from the rice. generic ale yeast and an incompletely fermented sweet malt base round it out. the taste is a lot like the nose, with residual sugar and a handful of mixed nuts being the prevailing flavors. its sharp at the finish before the sugar comes back in, a little acidic, tannic maybe is a better way to say it, like the sparge was too hot, but what do I know... the taste isn't bad, but the feel is, too much body, not enough bubbles (more like not any bubbles). this was a let down for me, but fortunately all the other beers I had at Portsmouth brewery were quite good. this is one to skip over, despite being interesting, the execution is rough.

Poured from a bottle into a tumbler pint, the beer is a orange-gold coloring with a fluffy, light, bright white head that settles out quickly to a thin filmy coating. Aromas of tangy sweet fruit, with hints of citrus, melon, and tropical varieties. Smells are subtle, but enticing. Flavors are a bit heavier, with a dark green cedar and oak barrel backbone. Bubble gum, melon, and fiddlehead flavors all blend together about the palate, as well as a hint of biscuit lacing throughout. The aftertaste is borderline sour, with a touch of clove and pepper cleaning it up. Slick, clean finish leaves a slight tangy linger behind. Much more mild than I was expecting, but very tasty and unique.

Served in a pint glass
Cask w/summit hops
The body sits a golden yellow color, with orange through the middle. A creamy bone white cap has great staying power. Loads of sticky lace coat the glass.
Aromas of strawberries and grainy rice with a bright earthy, spicy hop character and an extra burst of grapefruit from the addition of summit in the cask.
The flavor profile mimics the nose. Strawberries and wild berries, spicy hops, bright grapefruit, and long grain rice.
A light body, clean and dry. The fruitiness lends a sweetness that is excellently balance by the dryness of the rice. The extra addition of summit gives this a pleasing, bright citrus hoppiness.
An excellent summer beer. Light and refreshing with a pleasing hop profile, albeit enhanced. The fruitiness is more than welcome. Delicious on all fronts.

As I surveyed the brew list at the pub today, it was the name that caught my eye and asked the waitress about it. So I had to try it:
In a pint glass:
A: hazy orange/brown body with a tiny white head that fades quickly. No carbonation is seen rising. It left no rings.
S: some sweet malts blended with some cherries and wheat tones.
T: bittersweet through the previously mentioned smells and also came through a bit tart at times
M: light to medium with a slightly dry sweet aftertaste and finish, moderate amount of carbonation is felt. It was fairly drinkable
O: it tasted great with the pulled pork sandwich I had. I would definitely have this again and next time come back with one of my growlers to get some more to take home.
