This is a 2011 bottle. Poured in to a tulip glass, Kate the Great comes out completely black, with just a small amount of lacing for a head. The nose is full of black currants, port, rich dark chocolate and molasses. The flavor shows off many of the same components. The chocolate is especially prevalent here, and does not leave the palate for a while. It is almost the equivalent of fudge, or rich chocolate cake. The alcohol can definitely be tasted and felt, but it is so damn smooth going down that it is a non issue. The mouthfeel is very silky, and complex, definitely one of the things that makes Kate stand out from so many other Imperial Stouts. Drinkability is second to none, but it is one to sip and savor. As it warms the complexity grows remarkably. What can I say? As usual Kate the Great does not disappoint. I have had pretty much every vintage of this beer, and this one sits close to the top for me. It certainly deserves its reputation as a world class beer on mouthfeel alone. I remember the days before the hype where I could walk out of the brewery with 3 growlers, and 5 or 6 bottles. and couldn't give this stuff away to my friends. Oh well, those days are over, but Kate is here to stay in limited quantities. If the opportunity presents itself, go to Kate day, or try to trade for a bottle. Cheers
