Freshly filled growler pours a very cloudy golden wheat color with a finger of fizzy offwhite head which vanishes leaving not a trace.

Scent is fruity, floral and spicy. Apples and pears; coriander and cloves.

Taste is bubblegum, slightly tannic apples and pears, peppery spice - coriander, cloves. Biscuity malts. Sweet up front, spicy in the middle and dry and tart at closing. A kiss of hop bitterness at the finish.

Surprisingly weighty mouthfeel, very light carbonation.

I enjoyed it but certainly not among my favorite saisons.

On-tap, served in a tulip

A hazy golden orange, almost apricot-like color, with a slightly off white cap that rose to fill the glass. Looks really pretty. The head falls slowly, clinging to the glass at every turn.

The nose is sweet and earthy. Bubble gum, banana, and clove leap out of the glass. Soft fruity esters are also present: peaches, apricots, melon, white grapefruit.

On the palate, bubble gum and banana hit you first. Spicy clove and earthy malts then take over mid-palate before a burst of fruit and a sweeping spicy dryness. A mix of sweet and earthy notes linger.

Medium bod. This has a bold mouthfeel for the style. Just plain chewy and sticky. Awesome.

A very pleasant saison. One of the more fruity saisons I have encountered, but a great balance with earthy notes and a good drying quality. Well crafted.

Poured info a tulip on tap at the brewpub. Pours a hazy golden color with an orange hue. A little white head forms but vanishes leaving no lace.

Cloves and bananas are in the aroma. Seems to have a little bit of a floral hop background with a little bit of a noticeable malt body. Somewhat biscuity malts on the pallet with a little bit of a fruity finish. Bananas are noticeable with a grainy finish

The feel is good and light with soft carbonation. The flavor lingers a bit. Pretty good saison. The yeast seems a little fruity here. Wouldn't mind less of that but it's otherwise tasty.

22oz. brown bottle poured into a flute. Notes.

A: Pours golden amber with good visibility. Maybe a fingers worth of pearly white head forms adn some retention after a very strong pour.

S: Plenty of fruit esters and yeasty. Apple juice. A touch of yeast spice.

T/M: Feels very flat... and it's supposed to be a Belgian? Nice sweet malt side. Lightly spiced hops blend well with the yeast. Again, plenty of esters, largely fruity apple. Tasty phenols play nicely. Light body with nearly no carbonation.

D: The lack of carbonation is highly disappointing. I think it'd be a pretty decent beer, otherwise.

22oz Bomber

Dave shared this brew with me. Portsmouth's Saison has a hazy golden look with a caramel sheen. The haziness is enough to keep me from easily seeing through the glass and streams of tiny carbonation bubbles rise to the surface. A hard pour conjures up a fingers worth of head that eventually falls to a thick collar and islands of foam.

The first thing I notice is big notes of Bubblicious. There's a lot of fruit with red apples, pears, and some spicy notes on the backend. Light white pepper and faint coriander are most noticeable and a little dusty, graininess makes for the backbone.

Red apple and pear dominates this brew with a glowing fruitiness. The fruitiness lasts throughout with the grainy, musty sweetness on the finish. Bubblegum has fingerprints all over this saison and it shows through in a different spot on each drink.

The mouthfeel is light and airy with a soft carbonation that keeps things flowing but never becomes prickly. The finish has a touch of sweetness present.

This is another easy drinking saison which is exactly what it should be. Good flavor combined with an easy drinking body keep this beer flowing.

I can't get enough saison and this is a good take on the style from a great American brewery. Portsmouth does it up right.

Tyler called this one there summer Saison I kind of like that distinction. As of lately the brew has a great looking two to three finger white head that looks absolutely amazing in a tulip glass it settles down to a good lace . The brew is a slightly hazy apricot color to my eyes.

The aromas are a slightly sweet and fruity with a splash of spices in the finish. Flavors follow the nose quite well with an ever so slight dry finish for the style not as big as the De Printemps. The feel in my mouth was what I would consider medium, while being well carbonated for the style.
Saison's are the way to go in the summer to me they are easy to drink with enough fruitiness for a summer beer but not being over the top because of the spice bitter. My go to session brew when on tap.

A tripel-like saison. Clear gold pour with a medium white head and good lacing. Spicy aroma. Lots of yeast esters, clove, bubblegum. Some drier fruits. Tastes like a tripel. Lots of the same bubblegum and clove. Very light and carbonated. Not sure why this was a saison. Its a decent trippel.

Big thanks to BeerWorld for this one! I'm glad to be able to try something from Portsmouth. (this is off notes from 8-14-2008)

Pours a slightly fogged gold with a very small crème head.. Nose is funky and slightly citrus. Flavor is nice. Good level of fruity funk. The flavor doesn't stay for really long. But it doesn't completely thin out either. I consider this one more of a Belgian style saison than an American one. And everyone out there who's had a load from this side of the pond knows what I'm talkin' about. Feel is slick on liquid and low on carbonation. This is very easy to drink. A nice interpretation of the style.

Bought at the Portsmouth Brewery store.

Pours a golden yellow color with a hint of orange, hardly any head and no lacing.

Smell is subtle but has hints of spices and sweetness, some citrus and yeast.

Taste is light and crisp, carbonation is minimal, more yeasty and citrusy than the aroma, the lack of carbonation hurts it though.

Thanks to puttyman for this brew! Cheers!

This saison pours a fairly clear/slighty yellow body. Decent head and good retention

The smell is a little weak as to be expected from a saison. The taste was crisp and refreshing. Very clean and approachable.

Overall, a good beer to try.

A big thanks to jastack for the opportunity to try another Portsmouth beer!

Pours a light brown color, think apple juice, and a decent finger of foam. Not too much retention, settles down rather quickly.

The aroma is pretty tasty. A bright lemon aroma is the first thing I detected and then banana, yeast, clove, spices, honey, and a good sweet malt base underneath. As it opens up there are hints of apples, pears, grapes, pineapple and mango. Very zesty in one part and fruity in the other. I really like the aroma, very floral, earthy, and yeasty at first but a swirl of the glass rouses the beer and releases the fruity aromas. Nutty and bready aromas begin to show up as the beer comes to cellar and room temperature. I'm also getting something like crumbled crackers.

The taste is a little sweeter than I thought it would be; a pretty hefty malt flavor upfront. Again, very fruity...ripe peaches, pears, some apple near the finish along with a little tanginess. Nutty malts, bread dough, and lightly toasted flavor near the finish. Toast and bits of caramel in the aftertaste with some earthy yeast flavors as well. Semi-dry on the finish.

A little on the syrupy side initially, then a little carbonation livens it up in the finish.

This saison was a little more malty than the others I have tried but it was still quite tasty. Maybe a little more carbonation would pick this one up and not feel so thick and malty on the palate.
