Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #55 (August 2011):

Gose is a rather rare German style of beer, similar to other Weissbiers, which focus on a large portion of wheat; how- ever, a standout difference is the addition of spices and salt. Portsmouth’s starts with a cloudy yellow straw body and creamy lacing, and a wheaty nose with green banana, sweet herbal notes and a dusting of spice. Crisp up front, creamy mouthfeel beneath. Light bodied. Big smack of lemon bite, sweet malts, soft coriander and an underlying saltiness. Mild green apple, too. Fairly dry overall, but really dries up in the finish. Moreish. Delicious. Insanely drink- able. One of the best examples of the style we’ve had to date.

In an imperial pint glass the beer was a hazy lemon color with a thick white head and a lot of lace.
Aroma a little faint, some fruit and sweet malt.
Taste came through better. Banana, a little lemon, and a hint of spice in the finish'
Very enjoyable on a hot summer day. Good session beer.

Had on tap at the brewery—served into a pint glass
Appearance: minimal head, moderate carbonation, bright golden yellow in color, murky

Smell: lemon wheat, and a bit of saltiness

Taste: wheat and lemon combine nicely with a hint of salt at the end

Mouthfeel: light body, sweet, medium carbonation

Overall: I was really looking forward to trying this and was not disappointed. This may be the best beer I have had from Portsmouth that I have seen on their menu multiple times. Nice, light, and wheaty. This is super sessionable. It holds true to the gose style and tastes noticeably different then other wheat beers.

Tried this for the first time after randomly picking up a bottle from the brewery store. Poured it into a tulip glass.

A - Color was a pale yellow, akin to a pale ale. Had a very small white head that quickly dissipated, leaving essentially no lacing on the glass.

S - Smell was sweet, with some citrus and banana notes. Almost reminded me a bit of a belgian style beer, although not nearly to the same level of sweetness.

T - I didn't realize this was a wheat beer when I bought it, but it was immediately noticeable upon the first sip. Taste was wheaty with some lemon sweetness and then had a bit of a funky zing aftertaste. Light body and was fairly carbonated.

Overall, this was a refreshing beer to have while sitting outside on my deck in the middle of the summer. It didn't blow me away, but I'd probably try it again or others in the style.

22 oz bomber into a couple of glasses.

Pours a clear copper, with a ½ finger of bright white foamy head. This maintains a light looking frothiness, which leaves back a gentle cascade of spotty lacing. The aroma smells of spice, fruit, crisp wheat, and some more herbal accents.

The taste opens up a bit more, with a crisp snap of wheat, fruity green apple, spices, and an underlying salt-like mineral feel, which picks up considerably as this warms. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and sharp on the tongue, with a smooth firm creaminess to it that rides along the back. This feels just right.

This was a pretty solid take on a Gose, with an interesting flavor profile that was much more quenching feeling and drinkable then you would think at first. I’ve had a couple of these now and I will continue to seek more out. It’s definitely a style that has my attention.

I officially traded for this beer with CooperEllis and also received a bottle each in random boxes of beer from zimmerbloke and mjn5036. So thanks guys. I wanted a bottle of beer that only 1 person had listed as a got on this site and promptly received 3 bottles. Cascade and Upright both brew representations of the style that I really enjoyed so this was a natural want as soon as I found out about it.

The pour yields an opaque marigold yellow with a huge half snifter salt white head. Clumpy lacing on the glass. Oh yeah...thanks to CooperEllis and mjn5036 for each sending me a Portsmouth snifter so my wife and I now have a matching pair.

What a great fresh aroma! Smell is lemon juice, citrus zest, freshly cut hay, and mushrooms.

Taste is saison like. Lightly tart lemon, a touch of sour, and damp earth is where I draw that comparison from. The salty aftertaste reminds me that this is indeed a Gose.

Mouthfeel is highly carbonated with scrubbing prickly taste removing bubbles. Thin and finishes clean.

Extraordinarily drinkable! I liked this a lot and wish to see more of the style. Good job Portsmouth. Make sure to keep brewing this style and I will be sure to keep tracking it down!

Poured from 22oz bomber picked up on a trip to NH, into a pint glass.

Pours a medium to dark bronze - just looks like a combination of light and dark together. Some white foam, settles down to just a ring around the outside. Citrus smell. Wheaty. Lemon scented. Light clean taste. Citrus overtones and throughout.

Nice style (new for me) easy drinking beer.

Poured on tap at the brewery.

Cloudy in appearance with a nice cream looking off white head. Nice simple light gold body. Looks perfectly good.

Muted in smell but a nice simple light lemon sour.

Taste is very berlinerweisse in style but a little more fun. Simple lemon but also a feel of prickly schapps. I don't find this in the palate particularly tout or sour, but also brings a more breadier punch on the swallow. Texture is nicely light/medium bodied with just a good carbonation.

Overall this was alright for me for my first Gose style, I'll have to try more of this style sometime.

Received this rarity from CooperEllis... Thanks a ton John for an Epic Trade!! Shared with the Boise peeps over the weekend.

Nice rocky head.. descent lacing atop a hazy golden brew.

Nose immediately strikes me as pretty fruity... very reminiscent of a BPA.

Same flavor profile as the nose... hints of apple and pear... a bit flimsy with some minor spiciness... salt seems to be an afterthought, but it is present and does help tie things together.

Body is light with a sorta spritzy carbonation.

Bottle bought at the brewery August 2011.

The beer color is pale yellow and it's slightly veiled. The head is white and sticks well to the glass. The aroma presents notes of lime and citrus. Some grassy notes too. Taste is similar. More lime and citrusy. Carbonation is present in the mouth. Medium body. Nice and refreshing. A very good summer beer. A true session beer too. Taste and refreshing. Nice. Love it.

A - Pours a hazy golden color with a huge fluffy white head that looks like whipped egg whites. Fantastic retention, leaves a ton of soapy lacing on the glass.
S - Bready malt, sour apples, fresh-cut hay, lemon, and barnyard "funk". Nice nose, slightly tart and lactic.
T - Tart apple, lemon peel, sourdough bread, hay, coriander, and a definite copper-penny oxidized flavor. I'm not sure if this weird flavor is common to a Gose, but it's not particularly bad, just weird. There's a slight saltiness that's also interesting.
M - Crisp, thin body with sharp carbonation. Surprisingly refreshing.
D - I had no problem with the bottle, but this certainly isn't a beginner beer. If you like a good Berliner Weisse, keep an eye out for this one.

Thanks to Brez07 for bringing a fresh growler to the latest SMBDC meeting, this was the first time I've tried a Gose.

Pours a cloudy golden yellow color with a small head that fades fast, not much in the way of lacing.

Smell has a strong wheat aroma, good amount of citrus, banana and other spices.

The taste is quite interesting, I learned beforehand that Gose actually have salt added to the beer, which I could make out faintly in this beer, it's not overly salty but is certainly present, light and crisp and goes down rather easily, the citrus and spice help quite a bit in this beer but aren't overbearing either.

I was told that if you want to drink a beer while exercising that this would be the best style to do it because the salt will balance your electrolytes.

Appearance:
The beer pours a pale golden straw. The head is white and lasts quite a while.

Smell:
A strong scent of coriander but not overwhelming. A smell of what appears to be pare with an undercurrent of orange exists.

Taste:
Delicious. The coriander dominates most of the pallet but it doesn't destroy it and works well the orange flavor and slight hop taste. Additionally, the salt does wonders for the aftertaste. Regarding the salt, as the beer warms, the salt becomes more noticeable and compliments the coriander very well.

Mouthfeel:
Light bodied bordering on medium bodied with very little carbonation that is almost unnoticeable. The beer itself feels very smooth and goes down quickly.

Overall:
A damn fine Gose. I can't help but feel refreshed after finishing the growler at the end of a very hot day. My only criticism is that I have to go all the way during early summer to NH to get it.

Poured from the bottle into a Chimay goblet.

Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy yellow/golden color with a finger of fluffy white head that fades to a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Light and crisp, some fruity notes along with a mild herbal quality. Slightly sweet, the fruit dominates the smell.

Taste: Very light and crisp with some bready malt. The fruit from the smell doesn't really show up here. There is a very mild herbal taste with a slight bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with aggressive, tingly carbonation and a very dry finish.

Overall: This one could have used a little bit more flavor. The herbal notes weren't strong enough. Nice and refreshing, but I'm not sure I'd have it again.

Murky, barely translucent soft banana-yellow with a bubbly one finger bright white head. Head drops to a ring leaving scant amounts of lace.

Scent is lemon and grain with a soft yeasty tang.

Taste is lemon, grainy wheat, fresh bread, slight yeasty funk and a dry salty finish. Like eating a salted sourdough pretzel. There are similarities to a hefeweizen - the yeast tang and the lemons - as well as similarities to a saison. Coriander. Tartness. A very light sourness.

Mouth is both crisp and creamy with dry puckering finish.

This is a magnificent hot weather session brew with enough complexity to maintain my interest.

First time trying this style. Poured 22oz into pint glass.

A- Pours straw yellow. Very slight haze. Lots of carbonating bubbles. Fluffy white head that leaves nice lacing on the glass.

S- Smells a little musky throughout. Sweetness starts to come through with some citrus and lemon notes. Maybe a bit of spice at the end.

T- Lemon, citrus flavors up front. Sweet with a wheat undertone to it. Seems to have a little bit of funk taste mixed in somewhere. Does have a bit of a salt taste at the very end but is pretty mild.

M- Light body. Lots of carbonation. Get a mild salty aftertaste.

O- Very interesting style. Lots of good flavors with a weird salt taste thrown in. Still everything blends nicely for a good drink. Very refreshing for sure.
