Served in a snifter at the brewpub.

I kinda wish I knew the story behind the name... It pours a clear deep ruby-garnet topped by a finger of sandstone foam. (Side note: I wanted to be a geologist as a child.) The nose comprises toffee, ruby red grapefruit, red grapes, and orange peel. The taste holds notes of caramel, buttery biscuits, light pine, mandarin oranges, and orange peel. The body is a stolid medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a nearly chewy feel. Overall, a pretty decent b-wine, but nothing really noteworthy about it.

On tap at Bavarian Lodge in Lisle IL

Served in a 12oz. snifter

It poured a transparent ruby dark brown with a cream colored head that died rather quickly. There a was a medium amount of lacing on the glass.

The aroma was of heavy sweet malts with some toffee overtones. There was a little bit of alcohol burn at the end on the nose.

The taste is once again of toffee and some ripe darker fruits. The malt is heavy but not over the top and with a residual sweetness that is in check contributing to a nice drinkability. There is some warming brandy type alcohol flavors at the end that complimented the malt sweetness nicely. Finishes crisp and dry. The carbonation was a little too high for my taste for a barley wine.

Had on tap at the brew pub. Served into an over sized snifter.

A: Pours a deep copper / amber, with little to no head retention.
S: The aroma is a powerful malt profile, of roasted coffee and hints at chocolate.
T/M: A full bodied mouthfeel, that gives off a very warm and chocolate impression. The taste is an overall strong balance between malt and hops. For how malty this is beer, the nice subtle layering of hops on the finish are very pleasant.
D: This is a very drinkable barleywine, every time I go to the pub, I get this one. Not the type that I would typically get two of, but great flavors that does have me coming back for more.

Pours a inch tan khaki head on a borderline black body. Averafe head retention and pretty nice lacing.

Fruity maltiness.

Big time malt profile, only hints of hops. A particular fgrape fruitiness...id be interested in the yeast they used.

Medium mouthfeel although a bit syrupy, nice carbonation.

Easy drinking for a barleywine, doesn't show its ABV booziness at all. That, coupled with its fruity/spice yeasr characteristic is Solstice Joes biggest attribute. Worth a try if you're in the area.
