Pours a dark orangish-copper, almost brown. Pretty dense with a slight glow on the edges. Smells good. Very heavily of squeezed oranges and some slight bready tones. There's a hint of lighter, tropical fruit as well. Very smooth at the outset - no real bite. Reminiscent of a strawberry-banana smoothie. The malt grounds the middle and a thick, piney bitterness grows. The end is slight bread and a lot of bitter. Could be sweeter, but it's good. Not very carbonated, at all.

Like it? Sure.

Can poured into a tulip

A - Dark burnt orange and brown; Hazy beer with small white head

S - Orange, pineapple, light grassy, slight garlic, and grapefruit

T - Orange upfront with slight grapefruit bitterness in the middle. Enough malt to keep it balanced.

MF - Medium body with light stickiness. Full mouthfeel with lots of carbonation, Thick hop resin that remains on the tongue

O - Solid DIPA with a good balance and a strong bitter grapefruit presence

This Double IPA from Onion Pub is probably their best offering to date.

I had two glasses this sitting: 1) via the cask in a tulip and 2) straight tap into a pint glass. I liked the normal tap better, as the increased carbonation delivers the hops better. Pours a nice hazy orange beer, along with a couple fingers of clear white foam.

Very nice double IPA, clean tasting with tons of citrus notes and fruit.

Amazing stuff, glad it is going to be available around here year round.

Big thanks to Wendall for this one. Love the can art.

A: Pours a rather dark ruby/orange color with a foamy, off-white head on top. Great head retention with plenty of sticky/foamy lacing on the glass.

S: nice citrus aromas with grapefruit and a bit of orange rind. Some grainy malt and a little bit of caramel.

T: Very nice combination of citrus fruits and a little bit of pine. There is some grapefruit, pineapple, and plenty of orange zest. Very resiny with a little bit of malt to balance things slightly. No doubt this is an IIPA.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Rather smooth and easy drinking. Abv well hidden.

O: A solid IIPA, very easy drinking with an assertive hop profile. Just enough malt to keep things in balance slightly.

Very good drinking DIPA, with smooth understated carbonation, much citrus flavour. Golden colour. Hops like a 1.5 ipa than a dipa. Orange Citrus hoppy nose. Unobtrusive complementary intelligent malting so that grapefruit did not burn.Slightly lower mouthfeel than you get from the style, which I was good with.

Wild Onion "Hop Slayer"
12 oz. can, no apparent freshness dating
$3.95 @ The Beer Shoppe, Ardmore, PA

Interesting design on the can. Good marketing there.

The body is a cloudy orange / very-deep amber. The creamy yellowed-white head drops rather quickly but it retains a thin collar, and it does leave some nice lacing at first. Not a very good appearance overall.

The aroma is bright with citrusy hops (grapefruit, pineapple). There's a bit of a resinous and grassy character to it as well. Not much malt makes its way through.

The citrusy hops return in the flavor with lots of citrus rind, a bit of grapefruit, and some lighter fruit flavor (apple, berry, perhaps grape). The malt simply acts as support, which is fine. It's very lightly sweetish, and just subtly bready and caramelish. The hops are the showpiece here, and in that respect it's got a good balance. The bitterness is kept in check, although I'm not sure you can say that given that it's got at least 90 IBU's to it... perhaps I should say the bitterness doesn't eclipse the maltiness. It finishes hoppy, dry and bitter, but it's not a raspy or biting bitterness, and it does fade (eventually). Some alcohol is present as well (as expected), and that helps to dry it as well.

In the mouth it's medium-full in body with a standard carbonation. It delicately bristles, and then softens to become almost creamy-smooth.

Overall it's a pretty decent beer. The appearance hurts it, and it seems to be missing some of that "je nais c'est quoi" that gives some beers a certain "magic", but it's otherwise well put together and enjoyable.

Poured into a tulip glass. Served as King Paddy.

A: A golden blonde, hazy ale with a off white nose. Very good lacing with a two inch nose and good head retention.

S: The aroma was very pleasing, that of flowers and spice. A very well hopped beer which is present from the smell alone.

T: The taste of this beer was piney and strong. A nice presence of malt on the finish adds to the well balance of these complex flavors. Good carbonation with this IIPA. The alcohol presence is increase as the beer warms. Served nice and chilled, while refreshing, time is needed to allow to warm to fully sense all flavors.

M: With a nice silky mouthfeel, this brew is a great slow sipper, one that I found nice to end the night with.

D: while this brew is always 7$, even on 2.25 pint night (Wednesdays), I had joined the mug club just to be able to get it for 4$ all the time. This IIPA was IMHO the spot light of the beers that are brewed at the Onion. Very good and should be bottled in the cans, like the little brother, paddy's pale ale. Seek this out all you Illinois beer hunters.
