The Dubbel from Witkap is much better than the Single, but that's not saying much. I found the Single, Dubbel and Tripel all at Julio's in Westborough, MA. It pours a nice brown color with some reddish tints and a manageable sized head. The smell and taste of this beer are nearly identical to that of the single, but less metallic i.e. less offensive. The aftertaste has some very faint traces of chocolate, but other than that, the beer has very little character. It's a step up from the Single, but still nothing to rave about.

On tap at Ebenezer's. In a tulip glass the beer was a dark brown color with an immense tan head. While it thinned out some, the head retained quite well, and was very sticky. The aroma was mainly that of dark fruit, with some notes of caramel. Fruit dominated the taste, plum and raisin, and I tasted some brown sugar also. This was a very enjoyable beer.

A bottle picked up in Bruges in December. This beer is from lot C with a confusing BB date of June 12 or 13, both are notched.

A-Poured into a wide mouth glass this beer cascades into 2 fingers of tan head that recedes to a fairly thin layer that laces the glass a bit. Typical appearance of a dubbel except this one is a little darker brown then most.

S-Oh oh, this one has a bit of a funky aroma, not typical of a dubbel for sure.

T-Yep definitely infected. Tastes like a sour brown ale. Somewhat sour and tart with tastes of tobacco and cherries.

Overall this is obviously an infected bottle. Bummer I'd rather have tried the dubbel! Taste isn't too bad and I managed not to drain pour this. I wonder if this brewery is having issues with their bugs.

33cl bottle poured in a snifter.

HUGE light brown head on a dark brown body. Very Belgian-esque aroma, no hops quite malty. Very carbonated and sharp to the taste. A little bit sweet Overall, quite good. The head keeps sticking around all the way through.

Fresh, blasting carbonation and head out of the bottle like Miracle Whip. White with brown body. Aroma cross between Coca-cola, some spices and yeast, and regular brew. Alcohol detected. Aggressive carbonation taste but tasty drinkable, like a Rochefort mix of Cinammon and citrus, drop of pepper, bold but a lot of yeast more than the first rate taste of the Rochefort.

Had a half pour at Beachwood yesterday, and I was taken back just a bit by this one. Pours like a foamy apple cider with a thin sudsy head sitting atop a dirty, cloudy brown body with very nominal lacing. The nose was very much of the holiday season: cinnamon, nutmeg, faint fig, and bold red apple notes. The taste profiles did not waver much from this. Lots of spice notes on the front palate with a slightly dense, dry fruit finish. Again, a big apple crispness and flavor. At the same time, the flavors felt a bit one-dimensional. Slightly chewy but a pleasant finish. Overall, this was a very interesting beer, and I would likely go back for another if given the opportunity.

Pours a hazy reddish brown with a large slowly dissipating beige head. Aroma and Taste is caramel malt, Belgian yeast, some essence of dried fruit, dates and figs with some mild sweet tart bitterness. Palate is a medium body, good carbonation with a pleasant sweet dark fruit and malt flavor. Finishes with a sweet caramel malt, dark fruits and Belgian yeast with some mild sweet bitter notes on the end for balance. Overall a good flavorful and tasty brew.

The pour -- a 33 cl bottle bought 3-4 months ago was maybe the leasst auspicious part of the serving, comint out the color of chestnut-flower honey, darker than expected for the style. There was a huge head of light-toffee-colored foam that stuck around throughout. The aroma was a surprising rush of fruit scents, apple and peach, with vanilla toffee, some grass and hop flower. On the tongue it came across as vanilla caramel, still apple and other light fruits, and lovely, clove-y herbacious hops. It's a big mouthful, but rapidly scrubbed by a strong effervescent sensation, that makes this almost session-able. Overall, a very unusual example of the style that nicely finds its own way.

Pours dark brown with a large off-white head.
Nose shows treacle and bready malt along with some floral hops. Pretty hoppy actually, especially for the style, but still nice.
Flavours are similar but less sweet and with more doughy, bready yeast. Finishes kinda weak.
Body is watery, especially considering the rich flavours.

Bottle: Poured a light brown color ale with a good size foamy head with good retention but minimal lacing. Aroma of candi sugar with some light malt notes is definitely unique. Taste is a mix between some candi sugar with some notes nice floral Belgian malt with a unique yeasty finish. Body is quite full with limited filtration and some good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. A very interesting and somewhat unique take on this style.

Review from 6/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a ruby amber, with a rich persistent off-head head leaving lots of lacing. Nice dark and light fruit and malt aroma. Medium creamy mouth feel. Flavor of dried and fresh light fruit and sweet malt. Fruit, malt middle and finishes with a light tartness. A great enjoyable dubbel.

Drank at the 2007 Zythos fest.

Ruby, port red colour with a biege foaming head.

Sweet caramel, burnt malts, some yeast esters as well.

The taste was a let down, a weak blend of yeast and off fruits and sweetness throughout.

The watery aftertaste ruined the beer for me, some hop flavours tried to come out, but almost failed.

A big let down for me.

Be ready with a glass. This beer tried to leap free!

A-Huge long lasting tan head. Full ruby. Lots of carbonation bubbles.

S-Rose, caramel, and perfume. Very light stone fruit. Slightly earthy.

T-Caramel. raisin. Very low hop bitterness. Rose.

M-lots of carbonation. Fairly dry. Light alcohol. Nice

D-Nice dubbel. has the proper dryness and flavor. Not as awesome as rochefort 6 but still a great beer.

Purchased at the Bier Temple in Brussels, the brown 33cl bottle with a tapered neck shows a white, brown and red label featuring a hooded man holding a mug. No ingredient information. Best before 11/07, I opened it on 12/11/06.

Pours a very cloudy burgundy-copper hue under an initial two finger white that fades quickly to 1/2 fingers, but then lasts forever, leaving a few strands of lace. Sweet fruit and caramel nose, quite strong and enticing. Very well-carbonated and slightly heavy in the mouth. Yeast, caramel malt and spice mix well here, with a powerful hops backing coming on strong a bit later. The hops are more floral than bitter, with a nice tangy tone that then yields to a drier, more traditional bitter. The aftertaste is a nice balance of this bitter and a return of the fruit. Very well done.
