The beer pours a dark golden color, with a nice white head that is well maintained. The golden color is acheived with a small proportion of chocolate malt in the grist (I come to this brewery often). It's aroma is malty in composition with little hop aroma. It's taste is excellant. Malty notes and that Ringwood yeast. The mouthfeel is good also. Low to med. body with a smooth finish. Definately one you can enjoy over and over again. It's the flagship beer of this particular brewery, although I think they have better ones. As far as pale ales are concerned I think this is comparible to most micros, but is far from the top.

Reviewed based on tasting notes from a blind pale ale tasting.

12 oz. bottle inside a paper bag poured into a plastic tasting cup.

A- Amber color.

S- Nutty, earthy, good malt presence. The hops are weak in the aroma and taste.

T- Same as the aroma. The hops only provide a slight bitterness.

M- ?

O- It tasted English to me, and it turned out it was Cooperstown Brewing Old Slugger Pale Ale, which is a brewery that usually sticks to English styles although BeerAdvocate lists it as an APA.

Appearance - deep brownish orange slightly hazy.

Smell - semi-sweet, caramel, some citrus aroma. Not strong at all though.

Taste - decent taste. A real middle of the road slightly sweet taste of caramel comes through in the taste.

Mouthfeel - not much there

Overall - I thought this was an okay beer. Definitely sessionable. Not to overpowering.

A-Hazy orange, some carbonation, three finger head, semi-sticky

S-Grass, banana, butter, some citrus.

T-Meh, not much of anything. Same flavor that is all of their beers because of the yeast (the buttery note). Not much bitterness.

M-Medium bodied, some carbonation.

O-Only picked it up because it was the only beer I hadn't tried of theirs. It was meh. Not much reason to drink their stuff.

Purchased at the brewery last week.

Pours am amber brown with a dense white head. Good lacing. Dark body for being a standard pale.

Hoppiness leans towards citrus, is a little on the light side, and some malt sweetness and yeast character come through.

The maltiness is definitely a dominating factor here, each sip seeming to swing between the malt and hops. The yeast character hinted at by the aroma is also present here.

Good mouthfeel for a pale ale. No alcohol presence.

Overall I am rating this as an English Pale Ale and not an American one - it seems more stylistically like the former although it seems to use American hops. Also picked up a pamphlet that describes some of their beers; I'll try to update if it provides relevant information.

***
From their info:
"Old Slugger - a hearty pale ale, copper in color, quite malty, with a moderate hop bitterness. 5.4% abv"
General:
"In brewing, we use two-row English barley malt, West Coast hops, and yeast from Ringwood, England."
