Slightly hazy golden-straw colour. Aroma of hay, alcohol, faint crabapple, random yeast notes. Watery, grassy, lightly grainy taste. Clean but bland, especially in the finish. A brief wheaty yeasty appearance of flavor, but generally a tonic and flavorless.

Appearance - This came out a nice orangish-yellow with a beautiful, full white head.

Smell - The grain here is very stale and overly sugared.

Taste - This tastes worse than it smells. The grain takes on a putrid character with some moldy orange notes.

Mouthfeel - This is a tad bigger than light-bodied with dull carbonation.

Sinkability - It certainly looked the part but failed to deliver.

500ml bottle, 5.2% ABV. The word 'Ale' is prominent in its presence on the label, and interesting, depending on how one might approach the offerings of this brewery.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, pale straw colour, with two fingers of flatly foamy, dirty white head, which leaves some blotchy seaside cave lace around the glass as it efficiently abates.

It smells of bready cereal grain, cut dead grass and overripe hay, with a mild musty funkiness. The taste is more cereal-oriented bready pale malt, a softly innocuous generic fruitiness, and decently forward wild grass and hayseed graininess, with only the meekest of green-bottle skank essence bleeding through.

The carbonation is average in its supportive duties, the body medium-light in weight, but only just so, and the smoothness agreeable enough in its inoffensiveness. It all finishes sweetly grainy, of the aforementioned sort, and farmer's field hoppy, but in more of a bland, muddled manner.

Well, not the mess I was anticipating, given the general classification and label confusion (what is with the Ale proclamation, anyway?), but rather a so-so attempt at a middle European pilsner archetype. They mostly succeed, as the unfortunately expected industrial runoff essences are kept to a minimum here. I'd have another of these, actually.

A finger of head on a hazy, medium straw colored body. It looks better than most.
The aroma is a dirty barnyard, a little musty grain. Not offensive but not good either.
The taste has a medium bitterness throughout and finishes on a sweet note. A nice and simple profile.
The texture is crisp with a bit too much carbonation.
I still put this above average. I could see myself throwing these down in some small, southern Ukrainian town... come to think of it, I have.

Fresh bottle returned by a friend from the Czech Republic and poured into a pils glass. Pours a clear straw in color with a half inch of almost white head. Shows some decent retention and lacing, supported by a steady bottom carbonation.

Decent nose of light noble hops and some damp husky grains. Rather grainy and balanced.

Taste is smooth and lightly syrupy of neutral malts. Offers a full body without being too sweet, reminding me of Steinlager in a sense. Touch of spice on the close, nice carbonation, not bad, pleasant and smooth and opens up well.

Poured from a green bottle into a weizen glass. Has a pale yellow color with a 1/2 inch head. Mild, slightly grainy aroma. Taste is crisp and a bit malty with mild bitterness. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and is fairly drinkable. Overall a decent selection.

"High Quality Ukranian Magnat Ale" O rly?

Skunky grassy overtones, sticky white foam caked on a bright gold body. Immediately starts sticking to the glass, creating a flecked pattern of Jackson Pollock lacing, concentric rings of foam. Super pale, slightly anemic pastel gold.

Dry and grassy aroma, plenty of noble hops present. Smells like a Czech Pils or equivalent.

Tastes like cardboard soaked in euro lager, bleh. Flaccid and grainy, wet grain husks. A little bit of cardboard and tacky glue. Dry aftertaste. Oxidized pilsner malt and wet paper. Green bottles aren't doing any favors here, and it sure as hell ain't classy... even with the gold foil. Industrial lager gone wrong. Avoid at all costs...

1 pint .9 oz bottle. Aroma is skunky and metallic at first pour. That subsides and a light sweet malt accented aroma emerges though it isn’t a great improvement. Body is a murky yellow/gold and holds a diminishing, foamy white head. Fore is light on flavor, watery mostly and crisp with carbonation then sweet steeped grain flavors come in and carry on to the finish. Has the flavor of sweetned breakfast cereal, low hop levels and a weak palate.

1 Pint Bottle

Appearance: Pours out a straw gold w/ a slight white head the quickly dissipates(a little to quickly)

Smell: As soon as I opened the bottle I was hit w/ a strong malty smell and the usual hop smell associated w/ beers. Smells a bit stronger than what the alcohol lvl actually is

Taste: Watery w/ a touch of sweetness at the VERY beginning followed by a metallic finish. Has more kick to it than the usual lager/beer in not necessarily a good way. Feels like it's missing something

Mouthfeel: Very crisp but fizzy after you drink it

Drinkability: Hmmm....not a particularly bad drink but not my first choice. It is somewhat bland...lacking in some of the more complex flavours that some of the other drinks out there that are offered. Can I down a pint? Sure....I paid for it, I can drink it. Would I seek this drink out again? Most likely not

A: The beer is clear straw yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high bright white head that died down, leaving a thin head covering the surface and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Faint aromas of grainy malts and skunk are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of adjunct and grainy malts along with notes of grassy hops, green apples and skunk plus a slight amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer isn't that difficult to drink, but the green bottle and trip across the pond might contribute to the light amount of skunkiness in the aroma and taste.

500 ml bottle purchased for $1.39. The bottle actually says Magnat Ale, but there are no aspects of this beer that suggest ale. It could pass for a below average Czech pilsner though.

Pours out a very clear, light gold. This color does not usually hint at good things to come. Fizzy head recedes quickly and leaves some soapy looking bubbles. Active carbonation streams rise up.

Smells lightstruck. Not a huge surprise coming from a green bottle that's been on a long trip. The initial waft of skunkiness clears quickly. The aroma is otherwise very faint, but features some hops and some corn. Not really promising.

Well, I guess this is more than I expected. This tastes much more like a Czech pilsner than a Euro lager to me. The flavor is mostly a crisp bitterness. Grassy. More hops than malt though, which is good, since the malt is marked by adjuncts. Finishes pretty clean, but with enough dry bitterness to go back for another sip. Better enjoyed cold to hide the adjuncts.

Mouthfeel is rather watery and carbonation is high. It doesn't bother me. Goes down very easy. Acceptable for this type of beer.

This is not that bad. Not hard to finish, and I could session these. If I was in Ukraine, I could live with this. Probably won't revisit soon, as there are dozens of EPLs I'd want to review first.

Normally reviews of lightstruck beer are discouraged, but I doubt you can find a bottle of this that is not in that condition. Even then, this is a passable case.

500ml bottle. Lager glass. Enjoyed on jun´12. Bright pale gold in color & crystal clear appearance. White, close froth. Fairly well retention crown. Herbal & citric aromas with a subtle yeasty touch, corn grain hues. Clean bitterness & citric wedge flavor. Crispy, slightly sparkling in the middle. Light body. Moderate carbonation. Smooth & malty palate. Long bitter finish. Above the medium average of the Style. Nice drinkability. Good Pale Lager session beer.

A: Poured from a 500 ml green bottle a clear yellow with 1" thick white head which lingers leaving clumpy and sheet lace.

N: Yeasty and crusty bready malts, grainy, corny, faint lemon/citrus, grassy/hay field in autumm.

T: Yeasty, clean, some sweetness, grainy corn chips, and faintly stale fruits.

M: Light body and medium carbonation. Slight metallic aftertaste.

O: Simple and basic lager, though label says "ale".

Comes in a tall green half-liter bottle with a plain label of nothing but lettering. The main name is in Russian, while the rest of the info is in English. "High quality Ukrainian beer." and "Exclusive." Not clear to me what makes this beer either. The name translates as "Magnate," but there's no explanation for the reference. Rice and ascorbic acid are ingredients. Best before 5/9/04, I opened it on 12/7/03.

Pours a clear bubbly pale gold under a bubbly white one finger head that settles quickly to film. The nose is - ew! - fishy. Yup, fishy. Kind of like smoked fish. Wow! the mouth is light and prickly. The taste is a bit harsh, without much malt balance. It's all metallic bitter, but not overwhelmingly so. Despite the nose, I actually managed to finish this one (more than you can say for my first two samplings tonight!).

Found at the Freemont Bevmo so I picked it up because I had never seen or heard of it before.

Clear gold colored beer with a small white head. Decent looks.

Smell malty with quite a bit of grain scent. Fairly big soda cracker malt scent here. Hops are present as a lemony aroma that reminds me a bit of Coors.

Starts out a little sweet with a big grain flavor. Little bit of lemon hop flavor but besides that this isn't notable for Hops. Pretty much a middle of the road Euro Lager.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Drinkable enough but boring, similar to Heineken.

A: Pours a thin and clear pale gold with a thin white head and medium sized carbonation bubbles.

S: Kind of skunky, then herbal and spicy. Musky and a little sweaty.

T: Malt and slight hops, grain and then skunk. Flavor is up front with no aftertaste. Drying finish. It is still somehow crisp and clean. Tastes like a pilsner, actually.

M: Thin, dry, and watery. Standard lager style mouthfeel and texture.

O: Whatever. It's a beer that people probably won't largely object to, but it's nothing special.

I got about a finger-and-a-half's worth of soapy, agitated bone-white head off of this beer. The color was a pretty, deep-yellow with NE-quality clarity. The nose had a pleasant Saaz hops bite to it. The mouthfeel was light with a bunch of unpleasant flavors on the tongue. I got lager sweetness, silage, and a faint fishy flavor. Oof! That's twice today that a cheap Russian import has failed to satisfy. I'm canceling the mail-order bride even as I type this. The finish was metallic, fishy, and otherwise drain-pour inducing. Ugh.

500 ml bottle. Pours hazy straw with a long lasting white head. Aroma is of hay and some grassy hops. Body is medium and smooth. Taste is of bready malt, some grassy hops, citrus and apple. Finish is short and slightly sweet. I would not buy a second bottle of this.

poured from a green 16.9 oz bottle with a gold label and gold foil around the neck looks fancy. slightly hazy golden color with a one finger white head and some patchy lace. smells of fresh malt grains with a peppery herbal note to it. i think it taste pretty good, slightly sweet up front then you get that peppery middle that finishes slightly bitter and on the dry side. carbonation seems to go a little flat but otherwise would make a good session beer.
