Tasted from a cask at Spuyten Duyvil in Brooklyn, NY.
A: A dark brown and very thick look. Okay head with decent lacing.
S: Sweet smelling.
T: This beer tastes somewhere between a porter and a stout but more a porter. It is very pungent, strong and firm. Molasses taste but still smooth. The high alcohol content gives this beer a wine feel.
M: Full and smooth. So very smooth. It is also thick and and burly, kind of like a lumberjack's beard.
D: Very interesting beer and a great opportunity to try one form a cask but I could probably only drink one of these.

Served on cask in a tulip glass. Enjoyed at the brewpub.
Appearance: Deep red or dark brown. Very thick, light caramel head that settles like a Guiness. Nice looking beer.
Smell: Some fruit and sugars up front: raisins, brown sugar and molasses. Strong alcohol aroma burns the nose a bit.
Taste: All mild fruits - raisins and plums with a dark molasses flavor in the background. I faitly detected a slight vegetable character, but it went away quickly. Definite alcohol presence that made it a bit warming, but it was mostly balanced with the other flavors. Medium hop finish.
Mouthfeel: Much thinner than other barleywines I've had. Good carbonation owing to the warmer cask temperature.
Drinkability: Overall, good drinkability. The thin body helps with this, but be careful of the alcohol presence...that may turn some off.

Poured into a chalice a deep amber color with a thinner slight off white head, juicy malty aromas like dark fruit and caramel with hints of orange peel.Well rounded and rich flavors big caramel and pruney notes up front but it dries quite nicely with a sharp resiny hoppy finish.Rich and mouth coating one of the better Church Brew Works offerings I have had to date.

Cask sample at the brewpub. The beer pours a very dark amber color with a minimal beige head that is gone quickly. Very little lacing is evident. Huge caramel and malt aroma. Rich and smooth sipping beer with an emphasis on sweet malt, caramel and brown sugar flavors. There is a bit of bitterness in there that keeps it from becoming cloying. The finish is sweet brown sugar and maple, and even a bit of a sorgum aftertaste. Pretty interesting from start to finish.

Dark reddish almost brown with a small off white head that left some strings of lace as I was drinking it. Plenty of ripe fruit in the nose with hints of the big alcohol. Caramel malt and faint hops round out the aroma. As expected the flavor is big in dark fruits with some more sweetness from caramel. Very light alcohol peaks through with a touch of earthiness to help keep it from being cloying. Nice bitter fruit finish that was a bit dry. Great flavor with lots of depth. Plenty thick enough to support the flavor and coats the mouth well. Drinks like a smaller beer and no real alcohol burn. Very nice barleywine.

On-tap at the brewery. A beefy 10% ABV. Interesting color. Lighter than expected. A honey color with zip, zilch, nada head. Boozy notes of alcohol in the nose, with whiffs of sweet caramel. The sweetness in the flavor is tempered by the hop bitterness fortified with fruit notes. Nothing was overdone with this one, even the ABV remains well-cloaked with everything else that was going on. Well-balanced. Not bad. Ranks right behing the Blast Furnace Stout for me.

Appearance: Ruby amber nice off white cream head, leaves specks of lacing in my 10 oz. glass. Aroma: Rich buttery caramel malts with piney cascades pure perfect balance not overdone on the hops but it's not a malt monster barleywine I loved this beer excellent. Taste: Awesome combonation of flavors here a mellow Bigfoot similar hop components and very tasty sugary malt bite so nice. This one brings the Church Brew Works to another level to me, I haven't had anything that blew me away until now. Mouthfeel: Full bodied syrupy mouthfeel, nice solid brew in every way. Drinkability: Wow, so drinkable maybe too drinkable at 10 percent abv.

Served in a 10 oz. glass at CBW. The color was amber, with a wisp of head. The smell was a citrus hop on top of the caramel malt. The taste was a very nice and unique Cascade hopping over the regular barleywine malt, and the alcohol wasn't at all noticable to me. Mouthfeel was average. Drinkability-wise, I could have as many of these as the 10% would permit.
A fine offering from CBW. The Cascades were definitely unique in a barleywine, and seemed to cover the alcohol harshness up quite nicely. A great beer, and one I'll have again, both this year and in future years as well!
