Poured this for a night capper while enjoying a great book (A History of the World in Seven Glass by Tom Standage). Had no plans to review it, but I quickly decided this was something to share...

Appearance -- the color is a amber-vermillion topped by a small frothy head of tightly packed suds. From the side you can see a fantastic suspension of sediment (yeast?), on which the upward movement of carbonation acts in layers; the sediments at the outer portion of the glass fall while those in the center rise.

Smell -- Sweet and with very little spice. Caramel and vanilla dominate the malty/bready aroma.

Taste -- Two words (hyphenated), candy-booze. The taste is a rich burnt vanilla/toffee that packs a hefty alcoholic punch. I would say that the booze isn't well hidden except for two considerations. 1) the beer is 12% ABV 2) this better be decadent considering it only comes in a 8 oz bottle!

Drinkability -- NOT a session beer. Trying to get plowed from this would be like trying to get full from eating fudge. Sure it would be tasty, and it's probably even doable. But the satisfaction would be marred just knowing that you wasted all that fantastic food and moreover, you're going to feel like sh*t when you recover.

Overall a complex and tasty beer, recommended for sure.

Amber appearance - as the name would lead you to expect. Nice foam and lacing. Not a big head though.

Aroma is of booze, sweetness and some raisins and dark fruits.

Taste is quite syrupy with a bit of typical Belgian yeast. It tastes good but not terribly complex or refined. It has a fairly boozy flavour.

Mouthfeel is medium and a bit sticky.

Overall, an enjoyable Belgian beer with many typical characteristics of a strong Belgian ale. It is classed in the same category as Duvel which is a more complex and better beer to my taste. However, this beer seems to overlap a bit with Belgian strong dark ales such as Chimay blue. I guess an amber ale is halfway between a Duvel and a Chimay blue. Anyway, good but a bit boozy and not amazing in any way

My mark out of a hundred would be 83.

This beer is so drinkable, you can't believe it's an ultra-strong till it takes the edge off two minutes later. Thick, without being gooey. Sweet, without any sense of fruit infusions or exotic casking. Very malty. Goes down real easy. Should not be limited to before or after dinner! I'm going to try this with some marinated grilled flank steak or dry-rub 'cue.

This is one superb beer I just found it today.

Pours very well. Leaves a small amount of head. Poured into tulip glass. Smells great.

It has a great smooth sweet taste thats not too heavy with a nice sweet aftertaste. Not too sweet and not too much alcohol taste considering 12% abv.

This has just hit the list of one of my favorite beers. I have nothing negative to say about this beer. I will buy again!
