Poured 12/2009

It pours a murky reddish chestnut topped by a creamy, inch thick, khaki colored head. The head fades to a wisp but persists in that state. In the nose, it's boozy with dark fruit, sweet spice and yeasty.

There's a lot more dark fruit (raisins, fig, black currant) and sweet spice in the mouth. Now, there is certainly some booziness in the flavor and warming in the mouth (as well as warming as it heads down the gullet) but it's not harsh at all. It's lovely. Lots of flavors lurking about..vanilla, toffee, all that dark fruit especially raisin, sweet spice and just a hint of oak.

Smoother than you would expect, certainly smoother than regular Scaldis but make no mistake, this is a big beer. Big flavors, big sweet mouthfeel and the warming alcohol....leaves my ears hot by the end of the glass but an incredibly pleasant drinking experience. This might have to be one of my new Christmas traditions and, of course, I need to get some to cellar.

Scaldis de Noel has a very thin, off-white collar of foam (hardly even that, really), a clear, bubbly, rust-red appearance, and no lacing left behind. The aroma is of rich, sharp, sweet, caramel sugar and medium-roasted malt. Taste is of those elements, with a noticeable alcohol presentation in the brandywine style. There is only the faintest shadow of bitterness, here. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, slick, and somewhat chalky, sad to say. Scaldis de Noel finishes boozy, chalky, and rich.

12oz Bottle from the Palm Desert CA Total Wine for $2

Appearance – Clear brown colour with an above average size fizzy beige coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell – Malts, caramel, booze, dark fruits

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, caramel, all spice. There is also some dark fruits, booze, and a red licorice type flavour.

Overall – A big boozy beer that is perfect for the holidays. One of the better xmas season brews that I have had. I'd have no issues drinking this any time of year.
