Despite a high abv, this beer is very drinkable. Very complex, like a strong Belgian usually is, lots of sweet caramel without being too sweet, and just the right amount of heat. This beer goes perfectly on a cold winter night. Very tasty and bold. A winner.

BBE 2015 on bottle. Best By End of 2015 maybe?

A: Pours a rich dark red/brown. Tall and effervescent very light brown head. Head fizzes out fairly quickly, very light lacing left behind. Decent head retention at least.

S: Very sweet, loaded to the gills with candi sugar and dark fruits. Raisins and grapes I'd say. Maybe even some generic berry aroma. Brown sugar and some dark bread in there too. Some indistinct spices, nutmeg and cinnamon?

T: Whoa, loaded with spices. Way more than the nose indicates. Loads of nutmeg, cinnamon, maybe allspice? Cloves in there too. Heavy belgian candi sugar and dark fruits but the spiciness really dominates here. Back end is all dark sweetbread with a huge amount of nutmeg and allspice and cloves. Even get some of that spicy black pepper in there.

M: Heavy and sweet but not overly so, on either front. Nice and buttery smooth.

O: Big christmas-style spicebomb belgian. Mouthfeel is great, you would NOT expect 12% from this one. Smooth and drinkable despite the high ABV and the heavy spiciness. Spiciness was a bit over the top for me, obscuring the "normal" BSDA flavors but still delicious.

Not entirely dark, close to coppery in colour. Light beige head that leaves traces.
Smells of sweet raisins, sweet red wine, sour cherries. Lots of dark fruit but low malt on the nose.
Sweet richness, syrupy and dense, mostly fruity: straight juicy raisins, figs, plums, red berries, all covered in Belgian sugars, sour cherries bringing a light tartness, red grapes bringing acidic notes and a vineous feel. Faint citrus peels also, ripe apricots. Brown sugar caramel maltiness, lightly toasted biscuits. Spiced beautifully with typical Christmass cinnamon, some faint licorice, pepper, ginger and especially aniseseed towards the finish. Some slight herbal pine also. Lots of honey. Aside from being spicy, yeasts are also earthy, bringing some woody, dry notes. Hops are bitter and nicely felt in the finish. The dry finish cancels a lot of the sweetness, keeping this beer from becoming overly sweet.
Alcohol is boozy only after a while, in the aftertaste, but warm and nicely hidden during the sips and prickling in the finish, along with the mild fizzy carbonation and the spices. Personally, i think it would have felt "more Christmassy" if it was creamier. Don't get me wrong, it's not watery, it's extremely close to a sipper body, but i thought it was going to be... heavier.
Beautiful brew, perfect during the holidays, would enjoy having this one with friends out in the snow.

BBE 2014. Not sure when it was bottled.

Beer is a relatively light brown with reddish elements. Much lighter than expected for the style. Smallish off-white head fades quickly, leaving just some film.

Rich smell. Prune, fig and red grape. Vinous. Bready. Yeast.

Taste is similar to the nose and quite focused on dark fruits. Raisin, cherry, red grape, prune. Brown sugar and some bready flavours. Some spices. Alcohol is noticeable but remarkably well hidden considering the strength. Quite sweet.

Full bodied, moderate to strong carbonation, some alcohol heat, sticky sweetness.

Overall, very sweet but very good. A real beast of a beer. If this is really 13% (I have a bit of trouble believing it), it is one dangerous brew.

750ml bottle into a snifter

A: Quite light for the style, it's medium amber with three fingers of large bubble head, which quickly receded to a thin film. Not good.

S: Nothing like any BSDA I've ever had. Sour cherry mixes with prune. A touch of spicy esters, but not much.

T: At least this is better than the aroma. Sour cherry is still there, but it's not nearly as strong. Plums and prunes are also there, but not as strong as I'm used to for the style. I get some buttery qualities and a ton of booze.

M: Quite thick with low carbonation.

O: I hope for this beer that this is a bad bottle. I get butter and sour cherry, but it's more subtle than I'm used to for an infected bottle. The beer is also overly thick, has little to no esters, and no bright citrus to balance. Oh, and it's way boozy.

750 ml bottle, chilled down to 45f and served in a tulip glass.

A - Considered the best way to describe the appearance of this one while I had a glass or two, so I hope I'm not too tilted when I say it looks EXACTLY like sweet tea. The haziness, the little particles floating around inside, the black tea color, even a thin layer of foam. I'll add that while the carboantion is still strong (which was not long out of my bottle) its like a dirty snow globe inside my glass. How appro for a holiday ale.

S - Loads of brown sugar, toffee, dessert wine and baking spices. Captures the essence of the season well and decently complex.

T - Sweet and more complex than the nose indicates. All the spices stand out individually here rather than blend together, seems like a different taste every sip. It is a bit more vinuous than I expected, more white wine than sherry or port. Faintly woody also, like oak or alder wood. Very good.

M - Its syrupy and strong up front. Dries out very quickly and finishes with little more than a warm feeling in the back of the throat. At 13%, how that can be done is a work of art IMO.

O - In the holiday ale context, I love it. Not quite up there with the best beers I've had, but I cant wait to introduce friends and family to this one each year when the holidays come around.
