basically from what i understand this expensive bottle is a bottle conditioned (or refermented) edition of the basic scaldis brew. i expected it to be far more dry and bubbly than it is, and frankly prefer the base beer to this one for whatever reason. the elegance and refinement is lost on me. amber in color with a nice head but a ton of massive yeast chunks, literally as big as jelly beans, floating all over the place. i get a ton of sweet caramel malt on the nose, with a classic belgian yeast strain, smells like a sweeter blonde, not so much like an amber. prickly carbonation hits my nose too, but the sweetness is intense, and there is a desserty vibe to it, and the alcohol is hidden well for how big it is. the taste is as sweet as the nose, i thought the bottle conditioning would clean this up much more than it does. layers of brown sugar and caramelized cereal grain come up, and the belgian yeast that makes the base beer so distinct is a little muted here. a well made beer no doubt, but the base needed verily little improving. for the price i would skip this one and pick up the original every time.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 2015. Pours moderately cloudy deep orange copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense off white head with solid retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big golden raisin, plum, fig, cherry, pear, apple, caramel, candi sugar, toast, biscuit, clove, pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast and malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of big golden raisin, plum, fig, pear, apple, caramel, candi sugar, toast, biscuit, clove, pepper, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of golden raisin, plum, fig, pear, apple, caramel, candi sugar, toast, biscuit, clove, pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and big robustness of fruity/spicy yeast and deep malt flavors; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a smooth, slick, and lightly syrupy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome Belgian strong ale! All around great complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast ester and deep malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Pours a copper-tinged amber in the Affligem chalice. Really nice foam and it lasts well. A boatload of floaties adds to the weirdness. The aroma ranges from candy to fruitcake.

The initial taste is so shockingly sweet it's a revelation. I mean, it tastes exactly like sugar cane. However the Belgian yeast takes over. It doesn't get at all dry, except for a little woodiness on the tongue. Even a little bitterness as you sip. A faint hint of tart-sour flavor that provides a little complexity. Stunningly strong but thoroughly interesting. Sip slowly and let it warm up. Raisins and more fruitcake with a bitter marmalade finish.

This is totally crazy, but it's a Belgian brew that actually lasts well From the 750 ml bottle with painted label purchased at Bottles N' Bins Liquor in Monterey.

Poured into y Gulden Draak tulip. Orange body, albeit a little on the darker side. White head, fluffy.

A little floral but mostly caramel on the nose.

Very biscuity and super sharp like there's a note of bourbon in it. Another year or so might do this one well, but if you want up front and pungent Belgian this is certainly it. Rich caramel overwhelms and the ABV is not exactly hidden, but compliments. Fruity, possibly some orange peel or corriander, and malty but this one is probably all about the yeast.

Generally aggressive beer, the carbonation is no different. Necessary, though.

Again, a year of age to mellow would be welcome. If you can still get your hands on it.
