500ml swingtop bottle acquired at the Weyermann pilot brewery "fan shop" after an English language tour of their malt roast production process. Cost was 2.50 Euro plus 2.50 pfand (deposit), which is rather steep by Bamberg standards. Served into a .3l halleroder bierkrug at me friend's gaff in Bamberg. Reviewed live. I value balance in an IPA.

A: Four finger head of nice cream, good thickness, and great retention. Hazy caramel-copper colour. Appealing, but atypical for an IPA.

Sm: Buttery, heavy bittering hops, and barley. Pretty standard IPA fare.

T: Eck. Awful bittering hops mixed with some kind of overly thick nasty malt body. Sweet bejaysus that's bad. Leaves a terrible lingering aftertaste of the wretched malt mixture. Fuck's sake. Terribly built. I suppose it technically balances its wretched "flavours". I want to drink something - anything, even Cisco blue - just to get rid of the awful aftertaste. Horrible. Terrible. <Insert synonyms for "bad" here>

Mf: Awfully musty and dry, with a dry aftereffect that forces the nasty flavours to linger on the tongue. Bleh. Matches how awful the body is.

Dr: I couldn't brew a beer worse than this if I tried - and believe me, I've brewed some bad all-extracts in me early days. Steer far clear of this one, lads, and don't look back. (1,309 characters)

Quaffed while visiting Cafe Abseits in Bamberg on 22SEP11. Enjoyed this after a Weyermann Triple and a super Wiener Schnitzel. The 0.5l swingtop bottle was €6.00. Menu said it had 137 IBUs and used Columbus for bittering and Cascade for aroma.

I poured it into a small Weyermann tulip, and what I saw was a deep, rich honey hued bier, perhaps closer to apricot color. A thin, fine layer of white bubbles sat upstairs, mostly around the edge, with nice lacework. The aroma is rindy and resiny, with plenty of citrus. Mmmm!
Solidly medium in body, it was also pretty decent on the tongue, with minimal prickle.

As with the nose, the flavor had loads of pithyness, lots of bitterness, and rindy grapefruit notes getting in yo' face. Very much a West-coast style bier, without question. The finish is on the dry side, and it could use a touch of sweetness. On the whole, though, I'm not complaining. Having a shitload of citrussy hops while quaffing in Germany is a treat!! Prosit!
