Review from old notes I took 1/25/14 at the Lancaster location. The brew appears a clear light copper color with a white sudsy head that leaves stringy lace on the glass.

The smell is sweet like vanilla candy and caramel malt. Some herbal fruity hops blend with solvent booze and almost a perfume-like essence.

The taste is sweet then oaky and herbal/bitter. It has a candy touch of vanilla before burning alcohol with again almost a perfumey feel to it that is excessively burning for a brew claimed to be under 8%.

This is medium bodied and lightly carbonated. Kinda a unique hybrid barleywine that is big on the sugary feel and alcohol burn with subtle to almost lost smokiness. I feel like I need to drink this again when its available just to make sure I was actually drinking the right thing.

I enjoyed this on tap at the Lancaster Iron Hill, served chilled in a goblet.

The color is a deep honey amber with thick look and small pale tan head with fine bead and lace sticks well. The smell has a strong fruity and malty aroma with yeast adding some dried fruit esters with woody bourbon accent with sweet and boozy smell with lots of complexity almost toasted with a more candied-nut type smell with mild smoky woody earthiness. The feel has a fullness with rich layers of malt and moderately carbonated with light toasted texture and slight alcohol accent with mostly dry finish with some residual sweetness left on the palate.

The taste begins strong with rich malt and sweet nutty woody and honey-like fruity character with a mild caramel smoothness in the taste that blends with a mild smoke element and gentle alcohol flavor in the back end. The finish is long with wonderful rick and lightly spicy taste with mild bourbon in the flavor which is subtle and the finish has a dry woody light earthy quality. Overall this is a very good English style barleywine with the bourbon a natural fit -nice level of complexity for a 9.2%, very drinkable with great depth of malt flavor

This is my second smoked barleywine and both had a lower abv for barleywine. I wonder why.

This was a clear, dark chestnut color, it came with a small but long lived, foamy white cap. Smells bigger than 7.8%, thats for sure. Lots of barrel character, woody char, vanilla, and booze. Plenty of sugary caramel and toffee as well. I can't say I smelled smoke aside from some barrel char. Tastes bigger too. Sweet overall, flavorful not cloying though. Big catamel sweetness with a strong earthy vanilla and bourbon booziness. My complaint is a lingering woody char that comes on a bit too strong. Even the mouthfeel is bigger than abv indicates.

Good stuff overall, I'd love to see more experimentation with smoke and b-wines.

On tap @ Iron Hill Lancaster on 12/31/13. 8oz pour. Smoked English-Style Barleywine aged 3 months in a Heaven Hills barrel. Pours a deep clear copper, topped with a thin cap of bright-white froth. Retains with some rich ringing around the edges of the glass, which slowly drips spotty lacing down the sides. The aroma is sweet up front with a mix of cocoa, caramel, brown sugar notes and vanilla. An underpinning of smoke, light citrus and barrel character help add some bass to the nose. The flavor profile is very similar, with a rich mix of caramel, brown sugars, vanilla, oak and a touch of coconut. Subtle smoke and earthy citrus sit underneath, while a spicy and charred burn on the finish does smooth out but still lingers a bit on the tongue. The mouthfeel is fuller bodied, with a lively carbonation that fills the mouth but does get a little more slick feeling underneath. Some alcohol is present here but mostly seems to be coming from the barrel. This was nice, with a well-blended mix of base and barrel flavors. The smoke, while subtle, added an extra interesting layer of complexity to the profiles. I’d love to see what this Barleywine base could do in some other types of barrels.
