a: This was a slightly hazy golden tinted coppery amber color. It was served to me with a thick, frothy head.

s: They Belgian yeast pretty much takes over here, I can't find much wee here. There is some lightly sweet fruits, but nothing peaty. Plenty of earthy, flowery yeastiness.

t: Here again the wee takes a back seat. I enjoyed this, but I was hoping for more balance. Tasted blind, the term Wee-heavy wouldn't have come to mind. I liked the finish which was quite dry with light fruits and flowers. Not at all the malt bomb I expected.

m: A nicely beefy body and gently foamy carbonation.

d: Glad I tried this one, it was certainly unique. It just wasn't what I wanted it to be, that doesn't make it bad of course.

This arrived with a finger of light-tan head with low retention. Color was a slightly hazy orangish-amber. Nose was really sweet, syrupy sweet, actually. This would not generally be the first thing that I would reach for, but Mr. Rutherford had recently released it and I was curious. Mouthfeel was slightly abrasive on the tongue, like the carbonation was low or the bubbles tiny and tightly spaced. Actually, I did not see a lot of carbonation as it sat in front of me in a glass. The sweetness was not as pronounced on the tongue as it was on the nose, thankfully. Finish was super smooth, but also exceptionally sweet, certain to create a hangover if imbibed in any quantity. Proceed with caution!

On tap @ Iron Hill Lancaster on 2/14/10. Served in an oversized mug.

Pours a slightly hazy ruddy amber, with several thick and foamy fingers of off-white head. This stays creamy and rich, leaving a frothy coating of lacing down the sides of the mug. The aroma is very floral right off the bat (which seems to be a calling card with the beers here) but am extra whiff of the nose brings out smokey malt sweetness, spice, and I'm definitely getting some earth and fruity character from the yeast. Interesting but not bad at all.

The malts in the taste initially come off as deeply roasted with a that really lingers for a bit. They are also however, also giving a certain amount of sweetness (and a good bit of spice), with that Belgian yeast strain adding some extra fruity tones and a touch of earthy and woody character that lingers in the finish along with some leftover stickiness. The mouthfeel is fuller bodied, with a nice feeling softer creaminess to it that helps keep this easier in the mouth despite having some obvious alcohol beef to it.

I've been wanting to check this out for a while now and was most pleased to finally get a crack at it. And you know what, I really liked it! The Belgian yeast never hindered this in the least and actually added a layer of complexity that fell right in line with the flavors that I would expect out of a good Scotch Ale. Tasty stuff that went down very easily for such a large beer.

On tap at Iron Hill Lancaster on 2/14/10.

A - Dark amber, caramel-colored body with a frothy tan dome on top that retained quite well and deposited a bit of lacing around the rim of the mug.

S - Earthy and slightly musty yeast presence with a backing of fruity esters and spicy, peppery notes.

T - Pepper spiciness with a hint of Belgian yeast, the latter of which imparts a fruity character and slight musty funk in the backend. Finishes with earthy, woody hop notes and a slight alcohol sting.

M - Medium bodied with bright carbonation and a bristly mouthfeel. Finishes with a touch of bitterness, a spicy tingle and subtle alcohol warmth on the palate.

D - Scotland meets Belgium with this Scotch Ale from Iron Hill Lancaster. This one has a pleasant Belgian yeast flair with a pretty complex flavor profile. Good stuff!

Served on tap on 11-22-08 as part of Iron Hill Lancasters 1st Anniversary event.

Poured a clear caramel brown color with some reddish hues. Thin light tan head has good retention and left some nice lacing. Smells of sweet malts and grain, molasses, nuts, and alcohol. Tastes of fruit, caramel malt, molasses, roasted grains, smoke, dirt, and alcohol. Medium to medium full in body with good carbonation. Roasty and smokey, but still balanced and sweet. While Wee Heavy's aren't my favorite thing, this was very well done and enjoyable.

This is a wee heavy with the LaChouffe yeast strain. Served on tap at the Lancaster location.

A: The ale is a tawny port color, reddish-brown with a hazy appearance. A finger or so of head from the pour lingered through 2/3 of the glass.

S: The aroma is malty, thick with toasted grains.

T: The first sip is all wee heavy, thick with smoky malts. Hops are non-existent but they aren't missed. The Belgian yeast strain doesn't seemm to add much. The ale is a good wee heavy nonetheless.

M: Smoky with lots of malt and a leafy herbal flavor. The ale is meant to be sipped.

D: The abv is high, even though it never pops up. The thick malt flavor is a real treat though.

I had this on cask at Iron Hill's brewpub across from Franklin and Marshall on Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Served at cask temp.

A - A slightly hazed caramel brown/light tan cap w/a smooth appearance and the lacing is very good

S - A nice roasted aroma w/ nutty malt and spiced hop scents. There is a slight touch of alcohol in the nose w/ a bready yeast note and sweetness of caramel

M - A great blend of smooth creaminess and roasted/spice texture very round and finishes w/ a residual sweetness

T - The taste is of highly kilned malt w/ a touch of fruit from the yeast and woody/earthy notes. The flavor is full and beefy malt essence is dense w/ very rich flavors. There is a subtle dose of fig-like sweetness and a bit of tobacco in the finish which is both dry and has the earthiness of mushroom w/ a subtle floral sweet note

D - Not the best for the highly drinkable quotient, yet it is enticing w/ plenty of malt to satiate my inner sweet tooth. The flavor is earthy enough and has roasted barley which convinces you of the Wee heavy/strong Scottish tag- it has a kick w/ a bit of alcohol warming as it goes down on the second pint. I love this beer, kudos to Paul R! I wish I could say it was great for the quaffabilty, but I would really recommend this with a burger or steak, maybe a bowl of mushroom soup or French onion since this is worthy of a meal.
