Pale, unfiltered Belgian-style wheat beer. Although light-bodied, it has complex orange citrus and spice flavors that are very refreshing.

Enjoyed at the Wilimington, DE location brewpub.

A: single finger head on a cloudy golden body. no bubbles.

S: citrus, clove, breads and biscuit.

T: wheat, grains, breads and biscuit with both fruity notes and a peppery zest finish.

M: lighter side of medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: a standard wit which is nicely flavorful but not different or memorable from what you think of as the base style.

Decent, unexceptional witbier that thankfully doesn’t go to over the top with the spices. The look is right on: cloudy, extremely pale yellow verging on white; nice sized white head that settles down slowly and leaves good lacing.

Nose is typical of the style, with distinct wheat aromas; cloves, and citrus. More pronounced lemony aspect than usual. The flavor follows suit; there’s a decent hit of lemony tartness that’s more assertive than expected; other citrus notes, particularly orange peel, cloves, and a very grainy wheat taste that’s actually vaguely unpleasant. Something seems just a tad “off;” I’d almost think it was a dirty tap line if this place didn’t seem so fastidious in general. It’s hard to be more specific than that; and it didn’t ruin the beer, but maybe knocked down the overall flavor score a bit.

Medium-light bodied, crisp and clean carbonation, refreshing and dry as per the style. Everyone has a wit on for summer and these guys did it as well as anybody, I suppose. It’s hard to make this style stand out from its peers because everyone stays pretty traditional. I’ll remember this one for its good points – assertive lemony flavor – and its not-so-good – a slightly dirty tasting wheat note.

A growler fild yesterday at the Lancaster brewpub. In a Duvel mini tulip.

A: A golden yellow color, sunshine in my glass. Unfiltered and opaque, the ale betrays no hint of carbonation. As I stare, I'd call it a mimosa that heavily favors champagne. A good-sized head, white as snow, leaves legs of lace behind.

S: Wheat, biscuit, orange peel and pepper. That about sums it up but I'll go into a little more depth. Wheat and coriander stand out, tart and spicy. The tartness seems at home on this warmer June day.

T: Orange peel provides a soothing citrus flavor as each I swallow each sip. Before that, wheat and pale biscuity malt are bready and mildly tart, quite refreshing. In between the wheat and the orange peel, peppery coriander adds an additional layer. Graininess and lemony tartness see the ale off.

M: The mouthfeel is creamy, a rich head atop the ale. Wheat provides what it does best, a spry tartness. The spices are present but I wouldn't mind tasting some more orange. A very nice witbier.

A- Poured with a diffuse white head and no lacing over a completely opaque pale yellow body. No visible carbonation. (Served with an orange wedge, which was promptly discarded).

S- The nose is very restrained, which may have to do with the cold temperature the beer was served at. A mildly bready nose, with not much else there.

T- Impressive in the mouth. Starts off which some pale malt and some mild tartness from the wheat. On the midpalate, you get some moderate coriander and some mild bitter orange. In the dry finish, you get the lingering flavor of cereal grains. Quite tasty.

M- Thin body, slightly coarse carbonation; no astringency. Just a little watery and overall underwhelming in the mouthfeel department.

D- Despite its downsides, the flavor is great and it is overall quite refreshing... so I could drink a few of these in one night... particularly on a hot summer day.

A: Poured a hazy dominant orange with brass-golden hues. A 1 finger bright white creamy capping sits atop with good intentions and retention. Though slight in nature and like most of their drinks the lacing provides a nice sticky broken sheet coating. Beneath the bright orange haze lied a fairly active carbonation factor though lacked any sightings of yeasty material.

S: The aroma first brought about a good dose of fresh oranges with a light musky dryness. The creamy wheat nature is strong and evident while the overall perception was soft and well toned, lacking spiciness.

T: The flavor was creamy with malty oranges, bananas with a nice soft dryness. A mellow tartness of soft dried lemons is also evident. Theres a soft touch of dry yeasty and flowery hops that lingers a bit on the finish. Overall a mellow and softly toned wit, not as spicy as one hopes for or crisp. Drinks more like a hefe then a wit.

M: very light, not much substance wise here would be my biggest complaint. While the beer appeared turbid it was in fact a deep haziness that lacked a yeastiness that was sorely missed giving this a much softer feel. Some carbonation was detected on the swirl but still lacked enough to give this a bright crispness like that of a hoegaarden, which seems to be problematic in most their beers.

D: An easy drinking interpretation that was light spice wise and on the tongue. Moderate enjoyment with a lack of crispness and yeastiness being a missing factor. A mellow drinking wit that reminds me once again more of a hefe.

As IHLNC's resident nitwit, this seemed like a logical beer to review.

It had (barely) a finger of foamy, white head that quickly dissipated into wisps. The color was a very cloudy lemon-yellow, not entirely unlike fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice. The nose was big upfront with a black pepper spiciness underlain with a Juicyfruit gum sweetness. I love the effect that yeast can have on some beers! The mouthfeel was medium with a good bit of fruitiness on the tongue - apple, tangerine, grapes and all with the black pepper spiciness inside. The finish was dry and refreshing, perfect for summer.

I biked into town on a hot day and ordered the wit first thing. Came out in a tall pilsner sort of glass with an orange slice which I quickly removed. While the beer was very drinkable, like a good wit, the flavor felt a little fuller and lacked the small subtle spice flavors of a great wit. Instead it was a simpler sweet vanilla wheat with pepper and orange spice. Certainly not bad, but not my favorite wit.

A - a hazy yellow color with a quick fading white head. Good lacing. Carbonation releases constantly.

S - Not too much going on. Light and sweet with hints of yeast.

T - Maintains the tradition without crossing into the realm of dry white toast. A little watery. Bit of anise and lemon.

M - Smooth and light bodied, but a bit watery.

D - Very smooth and light. Goes down easy

On tap at Iron Hill Phoenixville on 9/1/08.

A - Clear pale straw-colored body with one-finger creamy white head that left a bit of lacing. Carbonation is quite modest.

S - Nice blend of aromas with hints of clove, wheat malt, yeast and cereal grains. Banana and bubblegum is also present, though not as pronounced as the other aromas.

T - Starts off with a bit of clove spiciness up front that's quickly countered by a sweet flavor and a bit of yeast. Finishes with a very pleasant cereal malt character that's quite tasty.

M - Light bodied with a smooth, watery texture and crisp, clean mouthfeel with relatively soft carbonation. There's a very faint sourness in the backend with a mild spicy feel on the tongue.

D - Nice sessionable witbier with a really pleasant finish. This brew is not overly spicy or sweet, resulting in a very well-balanced brew that's an easy drinker.

Enjoyed at the brewpub.
Served as a cloudy orange-amber color beer with moderate white puffy head.
Smell is restrained with some light orange and corriander present.
Smell is also light and refreshing. Notes of orange, pepper, and corriander are there, put again very restrained.
Finishes with a light crispness, and more orange and spice taste sensations.
A beer meant to offend no one. A pleasant enough beer, but nothing exciting.

This beer came a washed out gold that looked much like miller lite. Ish. I thought white’s were supposed to be white. Moving on…

Smells of coriander, red grape and watermelon with some pale malts and lemon rind in the background.

Tastes of a sweet corn bread base with a spicy, herbal yeast and a touch of coriander and raspberry. This also a hint of diner roll dough.

The mouth feel is light to medium bodied with a slight carbonation.

This one’s tasty for sure, but looks terrible.

Appears a hazy light gold with a fluffy white head. Plenty of streaky lacing is left around the glass. I chucked the orange slice that came with the package.
Smell is of crisp wheat, orange peel, coriander, and powdery bubble gum.
Taste is of the same aromas with the Belgian yeast esters working well.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, sugary sweet, and refreshing with spice.

A hazy, yellow-gold body with an orangish tint rests beneath a short cap of creamy white foam. The head retention is fair, and although it drops shortly to a thin collar it retains the ability to leave some thin lace about the glass. Distinct coriander greets you in the nose, over a gently sweet and wheat-like malt. The body is medium-light; and its very fine and zesty carbonation enhances the spiciness found in the flavor. Right up front, it delivers a solid coriander spiciness wrapped in lightly citrusy orange and mildly tangy wheatish malt. It's assertively spiced, but not overly so; leaving it to stand out in a crowd, albeit with a somewhat lessened degree of drinkability. A nice change of pace!
