On tap at the Lancaster location on Memorial Day 2011.

Pours a clean golden color with a good white head and a bit of light lacing on the way down. The nose brings forward some light grainy malt plus a moderate amount of floral hops. The flavor is really quite nice, distributing the flavors of the grain and light floral hopping quite well. Very crisp. Light with good carbonation. Very refreshing. Something I would definitely have again.

On-tap at the Lancaster brewpub.

A: The helles lager is a golden color, robust yet translucent. A half a finger of white head, moderate lacing (just a few legs).

S: The nose is pleasantly toasty, full of breads that remind me of the crust. The grains lend a sweetness that pairs nicely with the toast.

T: A rich flavor, evident from the first sip. Toasted malts are bready (and crusty), chewy with a mild fruit undertone. Hops come through late in each sip, an earthy bitterness that balances the toast. The finish leaves bread, with a mildly toasted fullness, to linger.

M: A nice lager is tough to beat, especially when I'm inclined to reach for an IPA. The bready chewiness, matched with soft hops, goes down surprisingly well.

On tap @ Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant (Lancaster, PA) on 1/2/11. Served in an oversized mug.

Pours a clear copper, with a thin fizzy layer of bright-white head. This does stay rich on the edges, leaving back a foamy cascade that quickly slides down the sides of the glass. The aroma is grassy, with some bright citric (and a little earthy) hop flavors. The smell of sweet biscuits from the malts is tight against the back of the nose.

The hops bite down with a little bit of force in the taste, with green and earthy citrus character that lays some bitterness down on the palate. The malts once again have a tight grainy feel that spreads balancing sweetness across the back end of the profile. This finishes with a dry leafy and spicy feel as well as some pithy bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a big sharp creamy carbonation, which prickles the mouth with flavor but there is just enough oily slickness present in the body as well to keep this feeling pretty smooth overall.

Good take on a Helles here, with some simple yet flavorful profiles and a crisp easy drinking body that gave this quite a thirst quenching feel. I had no problem putting this large mug away. I probably could have easily followed it up with another one as well. Good stuff.
