Lancaster

A - Served with a pretty dark, black, body...the head was light brown in color and stood one finger tall...it slowly fell to a spotty cap and left some decent lacing behind

S - There was a lot of roast coming to the nose...chocolate and cinnamon were backing that up

T - Again, lots of roast to start things off...the roasted aspect was across the board, from the malts to the "pumpkin" to the spices...the spice profile seemed enhanced with a big dose of cinnamon leading the way...sweet, roasted chocolate lingered in the background giving the flavor profile more depth...spices lingered in the finish

M - Medium bodied...roasty and spicy with both lingering

O - This one kicked my butt weighing at 9.4%...the flavor profile was good, but the spices (especially the cinnamon) got to me after awhile...a nice treat, but one was good enough for me

On tap at Iron Hill Lancaster on 10/23/11.

A - Dark walnut brown body with deep burgundy hues and a creamy tan head that diminished to coat the sides of the glass with plenty of lace.

S - Mild notes of cinnamon and brown sugar with a base of roasted malt and chocolate notes. The nose reveals the pleasant earthiness of the autumn season.

T - Semi-sweet chocolate and cherry pie filling immediately come to mind, for some reason. While there is a hint of roasted pumpkin, the spiciness is virtually non-existent, save for a hint of cinnamon and brown sugar sweetness. Finishes with a roasted malt character that releases a coffee flavor in the backend with a fair amount of earthy bitterness and astringency.

M - Medium bodied stout with a fairly smooth, oily texture despite its moderate effervescence, giving the mouthfeel a slickness that transitions into a slightly bristly finish.

D - Dig it, though there isn't much pumpkin character overall. The chocolate and spicy sweet attributes are at the forefront here, which ultimately works with the moderate roasty character. Overall, this is a pretty yummy fall treat and one of my favorites from new brewer Kevin.

Served on-tap at Iron Hill - Lancaster into a goblet.

A - Pours jet black with a pillowy one finger tall tan head leaving light streaks of lace down the glass.

S - Smells of pumpkin pulp, chocolate, coffee, smoke, and plenty of dark roasted malt. Not too bad but not the most balanced nose.

T - Starts off with a big dose of dark roast quickly giving way to a mix of smoke, pumpkin, chocolate, and coffee. This one is pretty roasty initially but a touch of sweetness creeps in toward the end of each sip. The finish is mostly just dark roast, lingering on the pallet for some time.

M - Heavy body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Rich, flavorful, feel that is strong yet enjoyable throughout the experience.

O - I really liked this one. I had this years regular IH pumpkin a few weeks ago and it was decent. This one is really interesting tho, I like how well the pumpkin matches with the dark stout. Glad I got to try this one.

On tap at the Lancaster location, served in a snifter. This brew appears black in color with a dark tan head. A webbing patten of lace sticks to the glass and is washed away with a light swirl that revives a finger of brown head back to the surface that quickly dissolves. The sheer look of this brew screams imperial stout.

The smell of this offering is very roasted. Dark and dry roasted grain imparts almost a chalky or ashy burnt charcoal character to the nose. Hops are present with an earthy element that comes across both leafy and veggie-like. A light inclusion of the expected pumpkin spices are an afterthought that lightly emerge as the brew warms across the back.

The taste is bitter and roasty with plenty of herbal hop bitterness included as well. Dark roasted coffee is earthy and roasted with a bitterness that mingles with the hoppy bitterness to make a light veggie flavor come through which at times is reminiscent of raw pumpkin but not quite. Dry roasty coffee and chocolate fill out the back and linger into the aftertaste.

This is a medium to full bodied brew. It is modestly carbonated and the most roasty pumpkin-style beer I've had to date. The subtle spice was enjoyable with a pleasant alcohol warmth down the back of the throat. A nice supper but I wasn't terribly excited by the veggie flavor. A little rework could really make this one a winner.

On tap @ Iron Hill Lancaster during their Great Pumpkin Harvest Party on 10/20/11. Served in a goblet.

Pours a straight black in the glass, with a thin mocha head. This maintains some rich frothy edges with a near ½ finger flare-up, leaving back a robust cascade of brown oils and spotty lace down the sides of the glass. The aroma smells of roasted coffee and pumpkin spices up front, with vanilla, chocolate, and more smoky roast filling out the middle of the nose. Green pumpkin flavor, hops, and even more roast fill out the back, with a burnt feel that comes out along with some alcohol heat in the very back of the nostrils.

The taste starts with a firm base of dark roasted coffee and biter citric hops. This is followed by a wave of chocolate sweetness, and vanilla, with the pumpkin flesh maybe mingling in the middle of the profile with some leftover greenness from the hops. The spices mingle throughout the body of the flavors but come out fairly strong in the backend of the profile along with some lingering brown sugar. The finish on this is burnt and roasty feeling, that is strengthened by the addition of some lingering bitter citrus as well. The mouthfeel is full bodied, with a big firm prickly feel to the carbonation that blows up in the mouth. That oatmeal fortunately kicks in along the back with a smooth slickness that keeps this drinking easier than you would have initially thought based on the roast and ABV that is present (which is actually pretty well hid for the most part).

This was quite good and I enjoyed how none of the different flavors got shortchanged here despite the fact that this was such a big Pumpkin Stout. The only drawback for me was that this came across as a bit too roasty in spots (which was only emboldened by the hops and ABV) but I do think that the overall package here still came out way on top. I'd love to see this one return again next October.
