a: This was a hazy, slightly muddy golden color. It was served to me with a small, soapy head.

s: Mild overall with spicy rye being the dominant aroma. I also found spicy noble hops and something sweet.

t: Somewhat muted musty, earthy rye flavors accented by sweet corn and lightly bitter noble hops.

m: Kind of heavy feeling overall, with lightly spritzy carbonation.

o: Kind of bland overall. There wasn't much Belgian character, the robust fruit mentioned on the menu just wasn't there imo. As a rye showcase this works pretty well.

Served at Iron Hill Lancaster on-tap into a 12 ounce glass. It's a sad day when this looks like the best "seasonal" beer on the menu.

A: Pale golden colored body, fairly clear with a touch of chill haze and a pretty nice frothy white head. The retention and lacing is great, and takes its time to dissipate which scored some good points in my book. Nice looking beer to style.

S: Hmm, there's really not too much going on here. Like the descriptor, a bit of rye, corn and pale malts show up on the nose. It's hopped nicely but just enough to make it known. Honestly this is bland, weak and not really aromatic at all. Sort of a let down but it doesn't smell off or bad though.

T: More the same - up front is some floral bitterness from the hops, quickly washed with the pale malts, slight rye and you seriously can taste the very corn-esque nature of the beer. Hints of Belgian yeast and a little spice is on the back end. It's not a bad beer but it's just very bland and boring. Trust me, I'm the first to say not every beer needs to be over the top but this simply needs *something* else.

M: Well carbonated, actually it's a bit too carbonated. Fizzy on the palate and a bit thin, sort of reminds me of an AAL style body. A bit sticky in the linger.

I've never really had a disappointing beer from Iron Hill until now. This was just so bland and boring, although it did have the aforementioned flavors it just didn't have enough to make me ever come back to it. Oh well, you can't win them all.

On tap @ Iron Hill Lancaster during their Great Pumpkin Harvest Party on 10/20/11. Served in a goblet.

Pours a hazed apricot, with a finger of bright-white head. This maintains a rich ½ finger, throwing up a frothy cascade that drenches the sides of the glass with patchy lacing. The aroma smells fresh and grassy, with notes of peppery spice and rye that add some airiness to this. Earthy citrus, ripe fruit and even a touch of bubblegum from the yeast are present here, while the fresh sweetness of the malt and corn really add a nice rustic vibe to the nose. I’m digging this.

The taste is similar, with an overall earthy and rustic tone to the flavors of spice, gritty hops, soft mellow fruit, and then a flat grainy sweetness (you get a little bit of the corn here) that melds to the greenness of the hops a bit. The finish is dry with spice and rye and some light leafy bitterness that lingers. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a firm crispness that seems to blow up in the mouth but then slickens out a bit towards the back, giving this more of a smooth creaminess that ends up going down pretty easily.

This was good, and like I mentioned before, had a nice rustic character here from the yeast, malt, and hops that meshed well with all of the other pumpkin or pumpkin spice related beers that were on tap during the event. I’d like to this one become a fall staple here.

On-tap at IH Lancaster. A harvest ale brewed with rye, corn and barley. Served in a mug.

A: The pale ale is, based on my extensive review, a pale golden straw color, very light. I wasn't expecting it to be so light. A thick, foamy head slowly receded and left plenty of lace behind.

S: The ale combines the musty sweet bitterness of a Belgian IPA with and stronger, more flavorful malt base. Rye adds darker notes, the corn additional sweetness. Hops are earthy, soapy with an herbal twang.

T: Rye fights with Belgian yeast and noble hops at first, a spicy but sweet mixture of flavors. The rye's aniseedy flavors are spicy while the yeast lends a fruity sweetness. The hops are more herbal, earthy in each sip. Overall, the ale has a rich flavor that is more Belgian than harvest.

M: The combination of flavors surpasses some of the other Belgian IPA-style offerings, the rye and diverse malt profile making a big difference. The mug went down very easily.
