On tap @ Iron Hill Chestnut Hill on 4/29/12. Served in a goblet.
Pours black with a ½ finger of light mocha colored head. This maintains some creamy edges and just drenches the sides of the glass with rings of sticky lacing. The aroma smells fresh, leafy, and herbal, with notes of pine and spice mixed in along with some green smelling grapefruit character. There is just a touch of malt presence underneath, with some light coffee and cocoa being present, but those fresh American hops pretty much have their way with the nose here.
Those hops pretty much control the taste as well, with a fresh green bitterness, herbal textures, and more aggressive notes of pine and light spice that cut across the tongue and hang hard in the finish with pith and pine that stick in the mouth. More malty flavors of bittersweet chocolate and burnt roast sit along the back, with that roast in particular contributing some deep char to that already angry finish on this. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a VERY lively and prickly sharpness to the carbonation that then gives way to more of a firm creaminess underneath. Although this feel does start to soften up a bit as things warm, it’s still overall coming off as a little too sharp. Just some moderate warmth is present from that 7% ABV and its pretty much right in line for what you would expect from that.
I wanted to like this more but it was just way too unbalanced towards the hops and the overly sharp feel only helped bring that fact out even more. I liked what I saw out of the malts here but I just needed more of them for a Black Ale. WAY more. Hopefully this one continues to get tweaked, as it showed a lot of promise.
