Dark amber, almost copper in color. The pour from a fresh growler yields a head of several fingers worth of foam with very good retention. Lace formation is good, not great. A pretty solid, sweet malt base is detectable on the nose, as is the lemony character that's the calling card of the Sorachi Ace hops. Bright, floral, and citric. A bit soapy.

Listed at 41 IBUs, and my palate says that's about right. Bitterness is dominant but only moderate. A flash of strong malty sweetness comes and goes. Even still, the malt backbone is pretty big for the style. I get a bit of a spicy rye kick, but I think the sweetness helps to mask it somewhat. Having not had the regular, all-malt Rising Sun, I can't make any comparisons. Hop contributions are all of the bright, citric kind. Texture is soft, sudsy, slightly creamy even. Mouthfeel is very nice, probably the best thing about this beer.

Between the rye and sole use of Sorachi Ace, this was a very interesting IPA (although I tend to hesitate at classifying anything with less than 50 IBUs as an IPA in the current marketplace). Nicely balanced, though hardly earth-shattering. Worth a try.

Serving type: growler

A rye IPA brewed with 100% sorachi ace hops.

a: This was a clear, pale golden color. It was served to me with a medium sized, sticky white head.

s: Spicy rye with caramel and some fresh lemony hop goodness.

t: The earthy rye, mildly sugary caramel, and fresh lemon zest are all here in good balance. I'm just not sure that rye and sorachi are a good match. The earthiness of the rye and the incredibly fresh lemon clash a bit.

m: Chewy and sticky.

o: An enjoyable IPA overall, despite my one minor complaint.

Serving type: on-tap
