Color is dark amber with a cream colored head. Aroma is very malty, I can't smell any hops. Taste is VERY malty, with little bitterness. The IBU count is not listed, and I'm curious about what it is. Expect it's very low. I don't think I've sampled a beer with this much malty flavor. It's a nice change of pace, but is a bit sweet. Body is medium and it has a nice mouth feel.

Poured from a longneck into a shaker glass. A fairly aggressive pour produces about 3/4 inch of creamy, off-white head. This continues to coat the top of the brew and sides of the glass. The beer is fairly dark in comparison to most Oktoberfests I've tried, and is a dark reddish-brown.

Subdued floral and earthy hops on the nose, with a bready, rich and slightly sweet malt flavor, with chocolate and caramel undertones. It has a notably satisfying mouthfeel, with a lingering creaminess on the back of the tongue.

Bayern makes excellent lager beer, and this is another prime example. This beer is without doubt the best Oktoberfest I've tried this year.

12oz : tulip

Deep mahogany colored body with a thin, foamy beige head.

Malty, caramel, bread notes predominately with very slight spicy, earthy, grassy hop notes.

Medium body, slightly syrupy, low carbonation.

Meh. The nose had me hopeful, but the taste was a bit overly sweet in the malts and the mouthfeel was unpleasantly syrupy at times.

I rather like this beer. I picked up a 5 liter party keg to reuse the keg and found that the beer was very nice and returned and bought 4 more. It is a nice brown very malty brew for an oktoberfest. The head is rather nice and if I keep it under co2 in the mini keg it retains a nice head when poured into a cooled stein. It tastes of wonderful malt and is crisp and clean with a nice touch of chocolate bitterness aftertaste that leads you to want more. This is the beer I have on hand when I am out of my own homebrew.

Poured into my Yuengling pils flute, Bayern Oktoberfest is brown with a small, sand-colored head leaving foamy lace. It's one thing to harken back to the more auburn tinged Marzens of a decade ago, but this thing is more like an alt.

Smell is very bready, and a touch of toffee.

Taste is similar, very malty, very bready, almost like a imperial kvass. Good for sure, but not to style.

Mouthfeel is dry, with a medium body.

Drinkability is pretty good, for brown larger. Definitely exaggerated malt, it's tasty, but far from classic.

Pours a deep mahagony red, crimson red really, dark and really pretty. But I always think of marzens as a bit lighter

Smell of strong nut, a bit of dates, old carmel candy, some cardboard tree like qualities to it

Taste is more a nut brown with a lager yeast honestly. Strong walnut and almond followed by a bit of lighter chocolate and some dark fruits. A bit of un buttered pop corn as well

This is a ok beer, not true to style by any means, but still not terrible for a fall offering, other beers by bayern are great german reproductions, just not this one.

Growler filled about a week ago. Kept cool.

A: Dark brown with a little bit of head formation, a central cap of the peanut foam is present. Red hue where light shines through. No lace.

S: sweet cherries, wood, rye bread, sweet yeast (I've had enough Bayern to smell a distinct sweetness from it). It's pleasant.

T: Nutty, bland and watery. Kinda has an original corn nuts flavor.

M: Thin with pretty substantial carbonation. Semi dry finish.

O: Decent beer, but not particularly taking my fancy.

On tap at Elk Public House. $5 a pint.

Appearance is a dark walnut color. Looks like a Coke. Foamy off-white head breaks down fast leaving nothing.

Smell is faint and earthy. Caramel and molasses (also like Coke) maybe some sweet smelling peat along side.

Tastes like it smells. A mildly bitter caramel flavor with a hint of a vinegar finish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied but flat perhaps a bit syrupy. Not much carbonation in this one.

Drinkable but unremarkable. Not a great o-fest in my estimation.

Poured into pint glass...

A: Pours a rich amber mahogany with hints of a ruby hue. Head forms to one finger, falls pretty quickly and leaves a thin ring around the glass.

S: Rich malt, brown sugar, faint molasses, very faint floral hop.

T: Big caramel malt with brown sugar, molasses and hints of anise. Hops are bitter in the finish, keeps things pretty balanced.

M: Smooth light medium body, a little thin, solid carbonation.

D: Pretty drinkable, gets a little sweet after awhile...overall nice beer though.

Serving type - Bottle (into glass)

A - Pours very unusually dark for a Marzen. Pours a a deep, dark, but still slightly clear brown, with a nice off-white head and moderate lacing.

S - Smell is of faint caramel malts, lots of nuttiness, and lightly floral hops, and a mild roasted character. It makes me think "brown-ale meets Marzen".

T - Taste is of bready malts, caramel, a slightly bitter nuttiness, and lightly floral/lemon-ish hops. This is definitely a different take on this style, but not too bad. I like it.

M - Mouthfeel is medium bodied, lightly carbonated, and pretty smooth.

D - A little on the rich side for sessioning IMO, but worth of more than one.

Overall - This is a very unusual take on the Marzen style. Maybe this should be called a Marzen Dunkel? Either way, it's not a bad beer, just doesn't strike me as very "Oktoberfesty". It's more like a slightly easier drinking brown ale to me. Just keep that in mind if you decide to try this one.

The beer was much darker than I expected from an Oktoberfest, something closer to a thick and dark nut brown beer. The nose wasn't anything remarkable, with maybe just a touch of malt peering through the head, but overall, a very nose-less beer, which is becoming pretty consistent with this dark lager style. Bayern's attention to purity again is the most astonishing note about this beer. The taste is crisp and smooth, with a slight bitterness near the beginning giving way to some sublte nut characteristics with a nice sour touch coupled with the roasted malt.

I have to believe that this is as close to a German Oktoberfest beer that you can get in Montana, if not the U.S., and the drinkability of this dark lager is pretty high, mainly due to the overall pure and smooth texture that leaves you refreshed after each sip. Bayern's beer is really growing on me now. Give it a try for yourself, and I think you too will become a convert, if you haven't already switched by now.
