Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown color with some ruby highlights that barley shine through. Upon pouring there is a tiny fizzy white head which fades very fast to leave a trace of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is heaviest of a roasted malt and grainy smell. Along with these smells comes some lighter notes of some darker fruit of plum and cherry as well as a bit of a caramel and brown sugar sweetness. A little bit of an alcohol booziness is there as well producing a rather warming smell overall.

Taste – The taste begins with a thick and hearty doughy taste with lots of roast and a great deal of sweetness. The sweetness is initially of a caramel and molasses flavor with some other sweet flavors of a dark fruit nature of plum and fig coming to the tongue as the taste moves on further toward the end. A little bit of a graininess develops later in the flavor profile and is joined by just a hint of a warming rum taste. In the end, with the sweetness seeming to step it up even more with more brown sugar and some cherry coming to the tongue, one is left with a nice sweet and roasty warming flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The beer is quite thick and chewy with a carbonation level that is on the slightly lower to average side overall. For the style, rum flavor, maltiness and even the sweetness the feel is very nice, bathing the tongue in all the rich flavor.

Overall – A sweeter doppelbock with lots of nice flavor. At only $5.99 (on sale) for a 6 pack this is an amazingly good buy. Very tasty and certainly a nice winter style warmer.

Malt and fruit nose
Ruby brown with a 1" tan tinted off-white foam cap.
Big malty rich flavors but there is something non-German about the palate.
Medium full body, medium carbonation.

My first from this brewery, from the bottle.
Pours a dark ruby red with a small wispy beige head that leaves lacing and bubbles.

Smell is slightly muted with molasses, caramel, toast, and dark fruits.

Taste is a mediocre blend of dark fruit and brown sugar.

Feel keeps this one from being a complete failure as its well carbed and has a nice slickness that compliments its average taste.

Overall there nothing really wrong with this beer its just rather bland and average.

I waited twelve long months for this beauty to come my way again.

A: A deep and dark, yet clear mahogany with a thin milky head. Lacing is minimal.

S: Not too much here. Roasted malt comes through the most.

T: A dark fruitiness fades into a super malty roasted flavor. God, is it good. Very bold, but not too much so.

M: Pretty thick, but with a wine-esque acidity. A very sticky aftertaste isn't my favorite thing.

O: Man o man, is this stuff excellent. I'm a huge fan of bocks, so this is right up my alley. No shortage of great beers in Montana, but this one is special.

A: Dark, dark amber. Not quite black, still slightly translucent. Doesn't leave any sticky irregular foam. The foam is silky and thin and drifts down the glass.

S: Nice and light. Just a hint of sweet roast, very mild and clean.

T: Starts off with a bit of tanginess which fades quickly to sweet red fruit flavor which is balanced out with a mild roast. Very nicely balanced; nothing stands out as too bold or overbearing.

M: Nice mouthfeel except for a lingering roast aftertaste. Possibly a bit thick for my taste, but easily can overlook that for the amount of alcohol it's that's in there.

O: Excellent winter warmer. Very nicely balanced. Great soft flavor, but still a deep rich mouth filling beer. You would never know this beer delivered 8% alcohol.

Appearance- pours with a thin surface head and a dark red-brown tone

Smell- mild noble hop tones with lightly toasty malt character, very mild mannered overall

Taste- sweet bread with nice yeastyness, mellow hop and malt isn't as sweet as i normally find doppelbocks

Mouthfeel- medium bodied with crisp bite on the end

Overall- a good standard version of a German classic, nothing super spectacular or over the top
