Yes I have Doppelbocks on the brain at the moment. I have a craving for that delicious sweet dark fruit bready goodness and those full-bodied creamy Ales. I have an addiction, and the only cure is more cowbell, err Doppelbocks. Wirtshaus Klosterbrauerei in the picturesque Bayern town of Weißenohe seems as good a place as any to produce an Ale that will slake my Doppelbock lust, or is it?

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a Stein.

A: Deep clear burnt caramel body with a 1cm cappuccino cream-coloured head that sits firm in the glass, like a proud Bavarian man-about-town-in-Lederhosen.

S: Quite a bit of funk on the nose, aromas of over-ripe fig, dark plum, date, moist brown bread and sweet molasses. Wowzer! What an intriguing bouquet. I'm really digging this brew so far.

T: The funk carries over to the flavour - all manner of over-ripe tastes (fruity and otherwise) trip wildly across the tongue; fig, plum, date, heavy brioche and caramel. There is the slightest hint of lemon rind in the hops (and I mean barely noticeable). This is a malt/yeast driven affair on a scale that makes Weihenstephaner (the makers of Korbinian) take a step back and go "Whoa, easy there!". Also noted is a touch of metallic twang - a tiny blemish in an otherwise fine Ale.

M: Lays a brown velvet carpet on your palate with its mid to heavy body and thick, creamy carbonation.

D: The over-ripe fruit funk is great with this one, the body is not. It's almost too cloying, too heavy bodied to be enjoyed, but it really gives meaning to the description of a Doppelbock as "liquid bread" and for that reason I regard this Weißenoher Klosterbrauerei Bonator quite highly. If it was a tad (and I can't believe I'm saying this) lighter, and a tad less over-ripe in its fruitiness it would easily be a Korbinian beater. As it is I am challenged just finishing the one bottle, I will however (like some intrepid 19th century explorer) brave the Doppel!

Food match: A meal unto itself requires no food. Seriously it would be a bad idea to undertake any meal with this brew, however if you were foolish enough to attempt such an undertaking my recommendation would be something roasted and German, such as a pork knuckle foolish soul.

500 ml bottle was poured into a weizen glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a two finger off white head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a copper color with good clarity and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass.

Smell: Holy loaf of bread, caramel, grassy hops, toffee, warm alcohol, plums, and figs.

Taste: The sweetness dies down a bit, but the toasted and bready notes come through with grassy hops and mild bitterness in the rear.

Mouthfeel: Chewy, medium to full bodied, medium carbonation, and a little warm booze too.

Overall: Pretty nice doppelbock. Hard find her in Boston and a good bottle price too. Might have to grab another.

a: Pours a dark brown, slightly hazy, One finger creamy head that dissipates quickly. High alcohol allows for noticeable lacing.

s: Strong toasted malt scent: very sweet. Some prunes in the background. No diacetyl, clean fermentation.

t: The malted aroma comes through strong in the taste, providing a lasting sweetness; Caramel and somewhat biscuit characters in the malt. Slight taste of prunes. Slight hop flavor. Sweet/ not dry finish.

m: Full body, feels like your eating a piece of toasted bread. Low carbonation. Smooth with no astringency.

O: Great beer very malty, a good beer if you don't like bitter brews.

Sampled (actually the whole 550ml -16.9 ounce) bottle on 12/7/13. Chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured into a brandy snifter.

Pours a very dark brown with a 2+ finger creamy beige head that lasts for a while. Good lacing was seen with each sip. The aroma is of nuts, caramel, maple sugar and dark fruits. The taste is even better with a hint of figs and dark wheat bread. Very easy to drink with no bitter aftertaste. Great balance of different flavors just add more to this brew. Really enjoyed this one!

On tap at The Black Sheep in Dublin, Ireland, poured into a tulip glass.

A: Ruby red with off-white head

S: Figs dominate smell

T: Figs are dominate, sweet, no bitterness. Fairly one-dimensional. Reminds me of strong dark belgian ales.

M: Medium light mouthfeel, medium carb and slightly syrupy. I really like the mouthfeel, but it doesn't match the dark fruity tastes at all.

O: Good, but the figs definitely overpower other tastes in this one.
