A good traditional brewed Bavarian doppelbock can be hard to find here in the U.S.,I found one today.Poured a rich amber/bronze with alarge fluffy tannish colored head,just big and blooming it was eye candy.Nice aromas of dark fruit and sweetish dough,liquid sweet bread you could say with a tinge of iron.Full creamy mouthfeel,very lush without being to heavy just great.Flavors of caramel and alcohol dipped fruit with some roasted nut thrown in,alot going on and it all comes together very well.My review compared to the others is alot higher but I have to say this is one helluva good doppelbock....really.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 1pt. 0.9oz swing top bottle into a mug.

Appearance: The body has a deep brownish coppery color with dark reddish amber highlights. On top is a small collar of tan foam. The head slowly settles and clings to the glass as I drink. This makes for lots of cool lacing on the glass.

Smell: It has a big deep aroma with tons of malt character. It has deep roasted grain with notes of burnt caramel, toasted bread and toasted nuts. The alcohol is also noticeable and adds a touch of fusel character which is a little distracting.

Taste/Palate: The flavor is big and full bodied like the aroma and like the aroma it starts with a big bready and roasted grain like base. Inside of it are notes of burnt caramel, toasted bread, and some light toasted nuts. I also pick up some dusty/earthy and mildly fruity yeast as well as some old dried/leafy hop spice. This adds some light bitterness to the background. Mingling through all of this is a very noticeable fusel booziness that has a harsh edge to it.

Notes: There is a lot of depth and complexity but it has its ruff edges too.

a: Pours a dark brown, slightly hazy, One finger creamy head that dissipates quickly. High alcohol allows for noticeable lacing.

s: Strong toasted malt scent: very sweet. Some prunes in the background. No diacetyl, clean fermentation.

t: The malted aroma comes through strong in the taste, providing a lasting sweetness; Caramel and somewhat biscuit characters in the malt. Slight taste of prunes. Slight hop flavor. Sweet/ not dry finish.

m: Full body, feels like your eating a piece of toasted bread. Low carbonation. Smooth with no astringency.

O: Great beer very malty, a good beer if you don't like bitter brews.

500ml bottle. No English whatsoever (other than the perfunctory import label) on the bottle. I kinda like that, actually.

This beer pours a clear, bright dark red brick amber hue, with two fingers of lightly puffy, moderately bubbly, and creamy beige head, which leaves a few specks of random islet lace around the glass as it hastily recedes.

It smells of grainy, lightly caramelized malt, more biscuity, actually, with some watery drupe fruit - pears, mostly - and some evolving dark, musty fruit, an oily nuttiness, faint cocoa notes, and earthy noble hops. The taste is more focused nutty, biscuity, toasted grainy caramel malt, with a hefty dose of apple, pear, and even white grape fruitiness, in conjunction with more earthy middle eastern dark fig-like fruit, and a slightly floral, sneakily warming booziness.

The bubbles are well understated, but generally quite supportive, the body a decently stolid medium weight, and really quite smooth, as no hop or alcohol ester seems daring enough here to interfere. It finishes off-dry, the biscuit character really in charge here, but a few caramel and orchard fruit notes seem amiable enough in their lingering.

A pretty enjoyable doppelbock, one with rather heady ESB characteristics, which is a bit weird, I know, but at the same time pretty welcome. The big ABV is kept well in the dark, and with the rest of the overall easy-going nature of this offering, it's a no-brainer to heartily recommend it.

From Premiere Gourmet. Very rich, bit overly sweet, cloying. Reddish dark bown, thick pour, thick mouthfeel. Honey, light spice. Drinkable but not the best representative of the style, would like it less sweet. Very malty aroma.Warming, alcohol hidden.

Gravity cask at Spuyten Duyvil, Brooklyn NY. Might be the first ever cask in the US.

A - Light amber color with an acitve fizzy carbonation in the pour. Sticky lacing on the top and some decent foam retention. Cloudy view belies some sediment of yeast in the pour.

S - Smells of walnuts, maple, and sugary sweet fruit. My first thought was that this was just like popping the box on a Russel Stover chocolate sampler.

T - Very sweet flavor with some bready yeast notes. Has a gritty protein flavor. Rich sugar stays throughout. Residual sugar of fruit adds to the complexity.

M - Crisp clean taste. Actually quite refreshing. Has a distinct texture to the liquid. By the time I finished the glass I found this to be a sneaky full bodied beer.

O - Not a style I go for but this was clearly a solid example of a traditional German dopplebock. If given another chance to have on tap I'd go for it.

Opens with a whoosh, pours an effervescent caramel with a thumb of cream colored head. Pretty good lacing & so-so head retention

S: Pears, a touch of brown bread, slight figgyness

T: Figgyness, leafy hops in tiny amounts& apricot jam up front. A bit of woody hops as this warms, some pear & dryness as this warms, slight treacle sweetness. Finishes with toastyness & a bit of persimmon & apricot

MF: Medium boodied, slight carbonation, thins a bit as this warms.

Not bad, but not a great dopple in any way

Easily one of the worst beers I've had from Franconia. Then again I had most at the delicious source too long ago, sigh...

Poured from a pint bottle into a large mug

Appearance: ruby red/brown with a head that starts out thick and rapidly subsides into a thin line that stays and laces as you drink.

Smell: very rich nutty sweet honey nose with some booziness, but not overwhelming

Taste:sweet at first with nutty coffee bitterness and a little dry finish

Mouthfeel Medium body, slightly creamy with just a touch of carbonation at the end

Overall: Nutty, warm....good

had this bier from a half litre bottle.

A: Pours a nice caramel brown color with a decent head that last for a long time. A good looking bier.
S: A sweet malty aroma that is very pleasing to the nose.
T: A good doppelbock taste. I really like the dopplebocks, but this one is a little strong, still good. Sweet, caramel taste that is very good.
M: Rich and foamy, a god mouthfeel.
D: 1-2 of these is plenty for me. This is not a session bier.

Overall, I really like this bier but only in small quantities. I strongly recommend this bier to anyone who is into doppelbocks. Prosit!

Pours out a dark reddish amber with three fingers of off white creamy suds and lacing all over.
Smell hits you from way back. Yeast and spice.
As you get closer the caramel and malt blend in with the yeast and spice to make a great smelling beer.
Taste is a little hot but still enjoyable. Malt sugar and alcohol with a bitter aftertaste.
Taste is kind of boring and one sided. Not a lot of things stand out except the alcohol.
Mouthfeel is sticky and sugar retention is solid through the entire tasting.
Drinkability is only as much as you can stand here. Too much heat but this would be nice on a mid-winter's night.

Review from 7/2010 notes. Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a dark red amber, off white head with lacing. Nice malt aroma. Very nice medium creamy mouth feel; malt up front. Somewhat sweet malt middle with an abrupt dry finish. A nice malt bomb in an attractive package (flip top bottle). I will buy again

On tap at brauhaus Schmitz...
Appears a dense, dark copper with a fluffy white cap that slowl fades into a mild collar.
Smell is of rich toffee, cocoa, bread, caramel, raisins, and prunes.
Taste is of the aromas with a fresh baked bread flavor. Yum!
Mouthfeel is full bodied, chewy, sweet, and warming with a banlla cream lingering alng the palate.

Served in a standard shaker pint glass. Glass of cold water on the side to sip from periodically.

Appearance: As served the beer is hazy dark caramel brown color. The ¼” fluffy head is a nice tan color that persists reasonably well. Sipping for the first 1/3 of the beer leaves some bits of lacing on the glass.

Smell: The aroma is on the simple side and mostly dark caramel or brown sugar with a bit of dark breadiness thrown in.

Taste: The flavors include mostly some dark caramel sweetness and nutty character along with a touch of breadiness. The alcohol is nicely concealed here.

Mouthfeel: The mouth feel is on the full side of medium and the carbonation is faint. The medium long finish is mostly sweet malt fading a way to an almost dry but not at all bitter ending.

Drinkability and Overall Impression: I sipped my way through this one and kept hoping that some of the complexity I’ve found in other doppelbocks would eventually emerge, but it didn’t. Consequently this is not a beer I’ll be seeking out and I’ll probably not have it again given how much better several other doppelbocks are. However, if someone else was buying and this was my option I’d probably drink another.

Poured from the swing-top bottle in to a glass. Nice dark brown color with a beige two-finger head. The head settled quickly, and the aromas were of dark fruits, and maltyness.
Tasted like Celebrator, but with the bitterness turned down a notch or two. I'm not a hop-head, so this is a plus for me.
Wonderful mouthfeel, and the alcohol (which is substantial) doesn't jump out at you. Very well balanced, in my opinion.
Can't drink these all night, but when you're in the mood, find a Bonator and enjoy it!

Poured somewhat cloudy reddish brown with small tan head in a Chimay chalice, head dissipated to ring around edge, decent lacing.

Smells great! Roasted malts, chocolate, dark fruits, spice, sweet.

Tastes better! Deep dark and rich, roasted malts, roasted nuts, creamy caramel, dark chocolate, hint of cherries, spices, dates, figs, little sweet into a slight but welcome coffee bitterness, alcohol seems hidden well.

Slight carbonation - little dry with a somewhat creamy finish.

Really liking this one, I can see how they created this for fasting: this is a meal! Delicious! Flavor strengthens as it warms in glass. Cheers ~

A - The pour was reddish brown in color with a weak cream colored head and lace that demonstrated it 8.25 ABV.

S - A definite sweet malt aroma with some floral notes.

T - Sweet malt, toffee, caramel, no noticeable hopsl.

M - Body is low-medium, but very smooth. The finish is clingly and the aftertaste is toffee flavored caramel.

O - This is a nice beer, but the aftertaste cries out for cleansing.

Very reasonably priced German dopplebock ($3.99 at Stevie's Bargain Liquor in NW Oklahoma City), sold in the reclosable-style bottles.

The aroma is heavenly. Rich with lots of maple-laden malty notes.

Pours a rich dark amber, almost the color of a dark honey. Giant tan head but one that disappears quickly.

Taste --- As expected, it is very rich and malty. Some maple notes. Nuts and caramel. Dark wheat bread. A little bit of hops in the background, along with some toastiness. Starts off fairly dry but ends with a mix of alcohol and sweetness.

Medium mouthfeel with a bit more carbonation than expected.

Overall... is very good. Reminds me of a sweeter and maltier version of Paulaner Salvator, but I need to taste them both side by side to know for sure. I will definitely be getting more of this beer in the future. I highly recommend it.
