I just love a brewing operation that’s willing to give me their technical information. High Point really opens the kimono on their beers… Only 20 IBU’s with a starting gravity over 1.080!!?? Man…

The Winter Wheat pours Imperial Stout black, with a spritzy, fizzy head of the shortest-lived bubbles this side of cola. Actually, this beer looks quite a bit like flat coke that went strong on the syrup… A big caramelly, molasses nose with hints of either dates or dried plums in addition to cloves, chocolate and toasted malts is a welcoming start to the non-visual attributes of this beer. Is that a bit of smoke too? Yup, a sip confirms that there is indeed a hint of phenolic smokiness threading through the cinnamon, raisins, figs molasses, chocolate, cloves and bananas. Damn this stuff is complex… I love the fact that it starts off tasting almost like an under-hopped Imperial Stout, but then the wheat beer yeast kicks in and takes us on a new road, which serves as a magical shortcut between Munich and St. Petersburg. The alcohol in this beer, though it can be felt eventually, can’t be tasted any more than in a 5% Helles. The shockingly low hopping rate manages to account for any molecule of maltose headed from the “balanced” side of the equation to the “cloying” side. This beer really displays finesse—it captures all that’s good about hefeweizen and Imperial Stout/Porter without losing balance, complexity or my interest. Great beer…

(on tap at Bridgewater's Pub - served in an Erdinger Weizen glass)

A: fairly clear, dark, air-dried blood crimson... tall stand of compact, creamy-spongy foam... the lack of retention was clearly due to the cleanliness of the glass - did spring up some foam which each big sip

S: invitingly bold dark fruit - plum, mainly - with a good bit of roasty grain poking through... bit of a leafy hop presence and mineral note... not terribly clove-y or yeasty-spicy

T: heavy on dark fruit flavors - kind of like a non-sweet plum or blackberry brandy... fair bit of hop and roast bitterness, though it's relatively mellow and merely serves to dry the beer out a bit... some vague background clove... not at all sweet as far as fruit flavors go and not terribly malty either, which is the biggest snag in its overall quality - would love to have a moderate, balancing doughy/bready flavor - not enough 'yeast' notes, otherwise a fantastic, explosive taste

M: a bit thin and lager-clean/crisp, but on par with what the aromas suggest

O: this tastes a good bit like my homebrew Weizenbock, this one obviously having more developed, dynamic character... really, all this needs is a meaty malt punch.... I would certainly drink this again, preferably in High Point's taproom

I can't really add anything that Jason Alstrom didn't already say about the characteristics of this beer. All I can say is that it is my favorite beer and I look forward to it very year. I've had it in bottles and on tap, and it has never disappointed. I do agree that the ABV is hard to believe. It is a dangerously smooth and drinkable beer at 9.5 % ABV.

Another great US craft weizenbock from Ramstein. Very dark appearance with lots of deep-roasted malt and fruity esters. The finish is burnt wood and earthy hops which is different than the typical Bavarian versions. Personally, I prefer the burnt caramel notes to the fruitier German weizenbocks. I really wish this and the other Ramstein brews were easier to find in PA since availability is important to a beer consumer. Fortunately, I came across this one at Capone's and am very thankful for that.

Appearance is quite dark, almost a stout like appearance with nothing more than a tiny rim of head. Nose is unique and very malty. Notes of grape candy, wheat, and a hint of soy sauce and cocoa. Taste has fruity components up front with emphasis on grapes and maple syrup, this is followed by notes of carob and figs with a touch of balsamic vinegar on the finish. Mouthfeel is somewhat thick with low carbonation. Overall, this is a very unique and complex weizenbock, however the flavors just don't agree with me.
