On tap at Churchill’s Pub & Grille in San Marcos, CA.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is slightly tart with some dark roasted malt, vanilla, wood, and bourbon aromas. Taste is much the same with a woody finish. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is drinkable but seems to be slightly off in some way.

On tap at Beer Revolution.

A: Pours a pitch black body, but it's filled to the brim and so it has almost no head save a few beige bubbles.

S: Tart, bordering on sour -- a vinous nose that implies either wine barrels or infection. Coupled with the roast and chocolate notes, it made for an unpleasant combination (particularly because I tend to assume infection by default in these cases).

T: There's a small sourness to it that doesn't help to resolve the question of whether it's infected. It's definitely not good; the vinous tartness doesn't blend well with chocolate, roast, and seeming caramel-vanilla (bourbon?) flavors.

M: Medium-bodied.

O: It came in a 12 oz pour or something, and even after several people sipped at it, we didn't finish more than half. Not a very good beer, and probably infected.
