12oz bottle with a best by April notch on the side. It's
April 2nd so it's on the back end but still good. Pours a cloudy amber color with a creamy and pretty dense ivory colored head. Keeps a full but thin lace and leaves a few rings of stick as I work my way down the glass.

Smells of very ripe, slightly over-ripe in fact, fruit and sweet caramel. It's somewhat bready as well, and the fruit aromas are somewhat tropical with some peach there as well. Pretty bland and not a very enticing IPA nose.

Taste is even maltier than the nose was, with sweet caramel and some bready darker malt flavor as well. Slight nutty flavor even. Hop flavor is very modest, which is probably a kind word in this case. It's somewhat leafy I suppose, with very low bitterness. Flavor is not bad, as the malts are pretty pleasant, but there is not nearly enough hop flavor or bitterness here for an IPA. Given the low bitterness I doubt this was terribly hoppy even at its peak freshness.

Mouthfeel is a pretty creamy medium body, soft and pretty smooth. Some more snappy bitterness in the finish would obviously be nice but this does have a nice creamy feel to it.

As an IPA this is really not very good. Way out of balance toward the malty side without nearly enough hop flavor. If it were an amber ale or something I'd rate it higher, however, because the malt flavor is pretty good actually. Just not nearly enough hops to make this a good IPA.

Poured from a 12oz bottle. Pours a nice darker golden color. One inch lasting foamy head.

Not much smell to speak of but that also means no bad smells are there. Some piney hop notes and a hit of caramel malt. This certainly has more flavor than the nose would indicate.

The brew has a sweetness while on your tongue but the finish is dry and bitter.

I've never tried Cottrell before. But one day while heading home from Foxwoods casino I stopped in a local package store looking for some local CT brew. I'm glad I did.

A: A coppery pour is dark with an abundance of macro-particle matter suspension. Pale khaki head is whispy, moderately holding while providing a broken, snake band like lacing.

S: Caramel grains, and grapefruit with a sweet herbal supplement. Hints of chives, floral scents, perfumy in delivery with an orange-caramel sweetness.

T: Flavor of toasted warmth, light honey, pine and grapefruit. Floral hops with some herbal undertones of chives and a herbaceous-caramel. Perfumy orchard like finish that was woodsy, grassy, with some parsely notes coming a bit after the swallow.

M: malty and creamy of medium base with a relaxed sense of carbonation.

O: Overall a unique blend of toasted floral and herbal hop warmth and not what i was expecting. Gentle ipa drinking, best before of november, consumed in jan may have some hand in the hops seeming a bit relaxed. I would try my hand at a single here first for those expecting a traditional style west coast ipa who may be dissappointed, for others seeking an alternative hop flavored ipa a bit softer, herbal and floral in content may find this a welcome different treat.

Poured chilled in ale glass

A: dark amber color; very little head; fantastic lacing
S: hoppy, sweet, lingers nicely
T: hops, straw flavor; slightly sweet, not bitter (despite being very hoppy); medium roast malt very prominent; inviting and tasty--very well balanced

Really good IPA, esp. as a standard, go-to type
