From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #64 (May 2012):

LOOK: Tawny and hazy, ample lacing

SMELL: Toasted biscuits, treacle, taffy, sun-dried hay, plums, alcohol, floral, cacao nibs

TASTE: Deep, full-ish body; grassy, toasted bread, biscuity, chicory, modest hop bitterness, figs, vaguely roasty, semisweet finish

At first sip, we knew this beer would have to come up to cellar temp for us to really be able to understand the complexities … and very complex it is. A beer as rich as the history behind the name. Worth the hunt to find a bottle.

12 ounce bottle poured into my pint glass.

Pours chocolately dark brown with with a smidge of white foam at the top. Malty peaty smell and a touch of pine. Taste is quite hearty with an earthy/dirty/peaty mouthfeel. Whisky/bourbonish finish. Loads of flavor, very hearty.

A: Sepia coloring with a khaki head that was milky, thin, with a light helping of lace.

S: Scotchy caramel apple, light boozy chocolate with some caramel pine and herbiness.

T: Flavor was chocolate, sweet-caramel, nuttiness, with some honey toasted malt. Sweet munich-caramel, cardamon, toffee with a nice boozy sweetness combined with some rosewood and warm, woody floral tones.

M: Malty, syrupy mouthful, nice consistency, quiet demeanor of carbonation. Boozy warmth.

O: Overall malt forward, sweet, boozy caramel honey, something you warm up to the deeper into the experience.

On-tap 1/24/2012 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub, in Pawtucket, RI served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark reddish brown color with a short dense off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains dark fruit, licorice, roasted malts, caramel and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts sweet with flavors of licorice, dark fruit, brown sugar and caramel. Then a hearty roasted malt character comes in along with a mild but complementary hops presence creating a decent balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down very easily, slightly filling, good kick, good variation of style, this is a nice beer to drink for a while.

12oz bottle with a Freshest Before Date notched at Sep. Pours a dark, dark brown with some light brown hues and a thin head. Aroma is boozey with some caramel, dark fruits, earthiness and maybe a hint of chocolate. Taste is of warming alcohol, earthiness, roasted malts and dark fruits. Lightly carbonated with somewhat of a light mouthfeel. I've had this beer a few times on-tap and was glad to see that it did end up getting bottled, limited though it may be. Overall, finally it pays off to live in Southeastern CT. Worth drinking.

Been holding onto this one for a little while, and with power out it was a good warming beer, but power just came back on... but I'll try it anyways.

Pours a darker brown fizzy head covering that disappears fairly quickly, over dark molasses cola brown color with a little mahogany light sneaking through.

Nose is interesting, plenty of dark reddish malts, sweet, caramel, candy syrup, dark molasses, chewy malts, hint of booze, light biscuit malt, almost barleywine sweetness, hint of toffee, touch of chocolate covered caramels, and just a bit of an earthy like hop.

Taste starts semi sweet and rich, little creamy even like creamed caramels, some candy reddish malts, plenty of toffee and caramel, little molasses even, with some caramel chews candy like. A hint of a darker malt but not much, little bitterness from some earthy hops but very little. Booze follows the sweetness and rich malts with a touch of phenol and a bit warming. It also brings a touch of fig and and just a bit nutty. Finish is still fairly sweet, little more toffee and even a little coffee syrup, chewy malts, caramel, toffee, touch smokey even.

Mouth is med to fuller bodied, rich, little syrupy, some warming just a bit tingly booze, lighter carb.

Overall not bad, decent overall flavors between malts, fruits, booze, candy flavors, etc. Not very drinkable but that's not really the plan for this one. But overall tasty.

First had: on tap at Capone's, Norristown, PA

A dark brown color with a short-lasting off-white head that receded to a sticky ringlet. Aroma of malty sugars and slight earthy tones. Taste of brown sugar and caramel, some roastiness, some toasted bread, cardboardy, and a little bit of organic hop bitterness in the finish. Not overly flavorful, but really nothing too bad going on. Medium body, tamed alcohol, low carbonation, seemed a little thinned out maybe, but generally pretty drinkable.

Sampling a cellar temp bottle poured into a tulip glass.
The beer pours a rich deep mahogany color with some ruby highlights on the edges of the glass when held up to the light. Creamy beige head of .5 cm fades to a thin edge layer fairly rapidly after the pour.
Aroma is rich and malty with brown sugar and caramel mixing with a bit of molasses and some earthy hop qualities. The nose is not incredibly robust but it is appealing.
First sip reveals an average to light body with very fine and rolling carbonation.
Flavor is similar to the nose with sweet caramel and brown sugar malt mixing with a bit of roasted malt that I didnt expect from the nose. Again not hugely robust flavor profile. The finish is very dry and lets in a bit of earthy hop note that is a little more astringent than I expected from the style. I also get a little bit of chalky notes in the finish.
The alcohol is well hidden and the beer is nice and well crafted, I wish the nose was a little bigger. A decent sipping brew.

Deep brown where bright light does shine through. Modest head that dies quickly to only rim lace.

Chocolate milk aroma with a mild bitter hop presence.

Stronger cocoa flavor, but a bit watery. A good hop finish with a element of alcohol warmth to the throat. A touch of cinnamon?
