A Scotch Ale, malty and complex mahogany colored with hints of chocolate. To commemorate the historic find by Cottrell Brewer, diver and discover Charlie Buffum of the wreck of the USS Revenge off the coast of Watch Hill Rhode Island. Last seen in 1811, the USS Revenge was Oliver Hazard Perry’s first Naval Command before his famous victory in the battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. Perry’s Revenge is a discovery you will wish to make with friends. Summon to mind the mystery of things long lost in the darkness of the ocean bottom.

Pour is a murky muddy deep brown with thin off white head which fades almost instantly.

Nose is rather sweet, with hints of caramel, sour cherry, peat moss, cedar and a little booze.

taste is also surprisingly sweet. Lots of caramel up front with hints of moss, and maybe a little touch of vanilla. Follows with a nice but simple boozy malt, nice basic scotch flavors are pronounced and linger.

Feel is medium, a little thinner than I would prefer for this style.

Surprisingly good. Would maybe even be cellar able for a year or so and improve. Better out there, but totally worth a look. (593 characters)

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #64 (May 2012):

LOOK: Tawny and hazy, ample lacing

SMELL: Toasted biscuits, treacle, taffy, sun-dried hay, plums, alcohol, floral, cacao nibs

TASTE: Deep, full-ish body; grassy, toasted bread, biscuity, chicory, modest hop bitterness, figs, vaguely roasty, semisweet finish

At first sip, we knew this beer would have to come up to cellar temp for us to really be able to understand the complexities … and very complex it is. A beer as rich as the history behind the name. Worth the hunt to find a bottle. (543 characters)

12 ounce bottle poured into my pint glass.

Pours chocolately dark brown with with a smidge of white foam at the top. Malty peaty smell and a touch of pine. Taste is quite hearty with an earthy/dirty/peaty mouthfeel. Whisky/bourbonish finish. Loads of flavor, very hearty. (272 characters)

A: Sepia coloring with a khaki head that was milky, thin, with a light helping of lace.

S: Scotchy caramel apple, light boozy chocolate with some caramel pine and herbiness.

T: Flavor was chocolate, sweet-caramel, nuttiness, with some honey toasted malt. Sweet munich-caramel, cardamon, toffee with a nice boozy sweetness combined with some rosewood and warm, woody floral tones.

M: Malty, syrupy mouthful, nice consistency, quiet demeanor of carbonation. Boozy warmth.

O: Overall malt forward, sweet, boozy caramel honey, something you warm up to the deeper into the experience. (587 characters)

On-tap 1/24/2012 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub, in Pawtucket, RI served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark reddish brown color with a short dense off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains dark fruit, licorice, roasted malts, caramel and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts sweet with flavors of licorice, dark fruit, brown sugar and caramel. Then a hearty roasted malt character comes in along with a mild but complementary hops presence creating a decent balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down very easily, slightly filling, good kick, good variation of style, this is a nice beer to drink for a while. (786 characters)

12oz bottle with a Freshest Before Date notched at Sep. Pours a dark, dark brown with some light brown hues and a thin head. Aroma is boozey with some caramel, dark fruits, earthiness and maybe a hint of chocolate. Taste is of warming alcohol, earthiness, roasted malts and dark fruits. Lightly carbonated with somewhat of a light mouthfeel. I've had this beer a few times on-tap and was glad to see that it did end up getting bottled, limited though it may be. Overall, finally it pays off to live in Southeastern CT. Worth drinking. (534 characters)
