Enjoyed on tap at Cole's. A nice summer beer. Ginger ale appearance, however a lovely white head and lots of lace. Some rye edge, complexity, above average mouthfeel despite assertive carbonation. Good hop bitterness, very drinkable with several malts.

64 oz growler from charleston beer exchange

for some reason, every time i order a rye beer, i expect a brown bitter, but i was pleasantly supprized when this poured a nice golden color. I had totally forgotten the "pale ale" part of the name. it has a nice fluffy head and good lacing.

i can smell the rye mixed with a hoppy aroma and some citrus. very nice, but not anything out of the ordanary.

taste was good i liked the hints of rye in the hops. light feel with good carbonation. nice and refreshing. definately a great compliment to my lazing in the sand on the beach.

On tap at The Pony, NYC:

A: Relatively light-colored pale ale, something of a mustard-brown, but with a great head and excellent retention and lacing.

S: A bit underwhelming, but a good balance between the rye and some citrusy hops and some toasted malts.

T: First it hits you with the wonderful, full, fruity rye up front, then it progresses along with a good toasty malt backbone, and the finish is an exceptional display of hops. It truly is a rye-pale ale hybrid.

M: Given the great complexities, it really satisfies. The long hoppy finish is unexpected, but great.

D: This beer is wonderful. It's mellow and subtle, yet with a greatly balanced complexity. The 30% rye is a great addition to the traditional APA. Bear Republic really knows how to use its rye.

Had this for the first time on tap at Another Room in Tribeca (NYC). Solid amber color with a small but firm topping of foam. Surprisingly well balanced and smooth. Just the right hit of rye spice balanced by generous hop flavor and aroma.

This beer from Bear Republic is less aggressive in hop aroma and flavor as well as a smaller malt bill then the better known Hop Rod Rye but still well balanced. I also think this is more drinkable then Hop Rod Rye which I guess is not surprising. I wish I had ordered another one rather then switching.

Great Beer. Makes me want to visit Heraldsburg or at least find it in the bottle locally.

Lots of head and lacing; clear reddish-brown color like a dark iced tea.

I can smell the rye in it, which is good, but I also smell a little bit of yeast which is not really supposed to be there.

Beautifully bitter and full of rye goodness. Wonderful.

Fully carbonated; a little drying at the end. I can see myself drinking this quite a bit if it were in NC.

Had this when we visited Bear Republic today. Nice deep gold bordering on amber. Aroma of malt and some subtle rye notes. Nice head retention and light rings of lace coated the glass. This is a very refreshing beer, I like rye beers and was glad to see B.R. make another in addition to Hop Rod. Good bitterness on the finish which is also a bit on the dry side. This lowered the drinkability for me a bit, as it was a bit too dry. A good beer though and another quality offering from Bear Republic.
