The beer poured crystal clear deep amber. The head was tan, large, and everlasting to lace the glass.
The aroma was malty. I say it again...malty. I could smell it from across the room. Some caramel was present in the aroma.
The flavor was malty with a nice hop bitterness that balances the sweetness of the caramelization in the beer. The flavor is well done and leaves you wanting more. A slight chocolate flavor was present near the end of the flavor.
The finish was dry and slightly bitter with a chocolate impression into the finish. The body was medium to medium full.
22 ounce bottle. (I think I have had this one quite awhile and it has stood the test of time with flying colors.)

Had on-tap at Westville Pub Asheville. Served in a Southern Tier pint glass.
A- Pours a reddish light brown color with a 1/4 inch light tan head that retains decently before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of surface foam. Resilient sheet of lacing clings to the glass.
S- Sweet smelling malt with a grassy hop fume that's so inviting.
T- Big assertive hop flavor with a somewhat sweet red ale malt profile. Hits the spot. Lingering piney bitterness. Alcohol shows itself just enough. Notes of caramel and brown sugar.
M- Dry and sharp with medium carbonation and a fullish body.
O- One of my favorite red ales and probably my favorite Bear Republic beer to be completely honest (I have not had Apex).
