Pours a very clear but very dark scarlet, clear enough to se through but dark enough to soak up a lot of the light. Huge, huge! buttery tan head froths up out of control and sits there as if it were a solid object. It leaves frothy, thick lacing behind, and absolutely refuses to diminish to less than a full finger throughout the glass.
Tasty smell, equally malty and hoppy... I wish my palate were more refined, because this smells really good, but it smells so much like so many other beers I've had that I can't describe what makes it good or different at the moment.
Definitely a hopped up red ale, this tastes like a mild IPA, only darker in color and a bit richer from those darker malts. There are some honey and butterscotch sweetness notes, followed by a crisp, delicious finishing wash of hops and a lingering combination of sweet and tart.
I continue to be very impressed by Bear Republic. Every single one of their beers that I've tried stuns me with its presentation, flavor, and drinkability. Love 'em to death.

On-tap at Tizley's in Poulsbo, WA. Poured into a pint pilsner. Clear deep red-brown color, nice one-finger head, then moderate lacing. Aroma is deep and inviting--malt, caramel, fruity, with mild floral hops. Flavor starts with malt and caramel, some toffee, nicely balanced, with moderate citrus hops finish. Mouthfeel is medium thin. Overall this is a really outstanding red ale, I really like it!
