Bear Republic Big Bear Black Stout is an impenetrably black ale with a huge, chunky, foamy, light-chestnut colored head that coats the glass. It has a fresh aroma of licorice and chocolate with a slightly metallic ring. It is medium-full bodied, very smooth and not very carbonated. The finish is dry, a bit syrupy and a bit acidic. It is quite bitter from start to finish. The malt and hops blend tightly. It starts chocolaty and then heads toward licorice. The alcohol is well hidden. The bitterness is a bit grassy. This green flavor blends with the licorice, fenugreek and maybe even caraway in the aftertaste. It is woodsy and maybe a bit resiny. The balance is pretty nice-- not heavy. Very drinkable-- almost too drinkable!
