Poured into a pint glass from a 22oz bomber. Purchased from Whole Foods, couldn't find a bottled-on date.

Look: Tangerine, hazy, orange color with a nice frothy finger head. The beer leaves a nice sudsy lacing on the glass.

Smell: Strong notes of grapefruit and orange. Lots of citrus and and a hint of pine. The perfect and ideal smell for a DIPA. You can smell this one a foot away once you crack the bottle and pour a glass. Very nice.

Taste: Like sweet and bitter hop nectar balanced by a nice slight hint of malt sugar. Very pleasant taste that reminds me of tropical candy with a strong peach flavor. The beer is a very nice representation of the style and theres a nice hint of alcohol in the back.

Feel: Honestly, I found this beer to have a lighter mouthfeel than most DIPA's that I've tried, but this does not detract from the beer. The brew leaves a nice lingering taste that allows you to crave more and more as you sip.

Overall: This is a tasty beer! I'd recommend picking it up if you can find it at your local beer store.

Bomber into an IPA glass

L: Hazy honey colored with a billowing off white head - slow to dissipate leaving nice uniform lacing
S: Hops - citrus, tropical fruit,
T: The IBUs are there, but almost no sweetness, plenty of juicy hops
F: Nice as well, medium body/carbonation
O: A great DIPA with great balance - really enjoying lack of sweetness

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber with a big head; excellent stickage and plenty of lacing action

Smell: Bright tropical fruit tones with some citrus and caramel

Taste: The caramel malt lays down a base but, unlike many DIPAs, this one is not cloying at all; within a blink of an eye, the tropical fruit tones arrive, bringing, papaya, mango and pineapple; strawberry and melon tones add complexity and the citrus comes, after the swallow

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I am quite impressed by this DIPA; just a ton of fruity complexity with the alcohol and malts showing admirable restraint

Poured from the bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass. woah.. gotta check them dates... best by April 24th 2015.

Deep tangerine orange, slightly opaque with some small rising carbonation of pinhead size coming through. Head has quite a yellow hue to it and creamy banana like quality. Three fingers easily tall, kind of foams and balloons up on creation with a lot of staying power and swiss cheese retention.

Strong aroma. Lots of sugar notes, but also some tropical mush and citrus. Some interesting sweet citrus tangerine quality, but also heavily sugary smelling and it seems to bring out more alcohol like heat on the nose. It's impressive hop forward with an interesting sweet bent.

Palate comes strong, but in many angles. Slightly juiced feel but also a good orange and melon like quality, even some hinting icing sugar like sweetness in the mid palate. Finishes thick but right, with little coating. Slightly peppery like hops give a nice tingle but also the sweetness brings out too much of a cream soda quality, but with at least a good malt backbone to go with it.

This reminds me of a beer version of Orange Crush soda, minus the extreme sweetness of that beverage though. Pretty interesting, and simply solid even at this age.

I like me some hops and this doesn't disappoint. It has a big hoppy aroma and fruity overtone. Low/medium carbonation and and a yellowy color didn't give me high hopes but it's a wallop of flavor. Lengthy citrusy/cedar finish. Going back for more.

22 oz bottle poured into small glass

A: hazy burnt orange color not much head soapy ring around the glass

S: citrus rind touches of grapefruit and light lemon little bit of cracker malts maybe a touch of pine

T: not a very juicy beer more of hints at citrus with some of the piney earthiness

M: medium feel tastes and bitterness linger a little

O: it's a solid beer along the hop stoopid and pliny the elder vain but not like the newer juicy fruit bombs that have been landing lately.  This seems like a beer that needs to evolve it's no longer cutting edge citrus.

A: Hazy gold under a 2” of white foam cap that produces very clingy lace. S: Big grassy nose T: Starts malty with a light sweetness, a blend of peach and melon finishing with a soft grapefruit rind bitterness. Traces of earthiness. M: Creamy, medium full body and above average carbonation. The carbonation is not soft and harsh. O: A very drinkable DIPA with a nice balance of flavors featuring big West Coast hops.

Great initial fruity smell. Smells like citrus and bananas. Initial taste is hoppy and citrusy. It is well balanced with malts. Only issue is that there is an unpleasant taste at the finish

2015 edition 8.25%

Appearance - Pours an amber with two fingers of bubbly white head.

Smell - citrus and citra hops, tropical fruits (passionfruit, mango), bready caramalts.

Taste - Starts off with a nice bitter punch from the hops followed by the bready caramalts, and tropical fruits.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes sticky with a lingering bitterness.

Overall - A spot on and stellar IPA. Another score of a find in West Hollywood.

This is one quality hop forward IPA. It is not overwhelming or too hoppy, but balances a light body with the initial scent of hops. The smell is also a pleasant strong hop smell, but without making me think I'm smoking.

Bear Republic crushes it with Apex. A double IPA, it's well-balanced and delicious. A very, very good beer, and we're not hurting for IPAs around here ;)

How do you improve upon Racer 5 and Racer X? Put out Apex, that's how. Be careful if you don't like a hop forward beer. This is as forward as it gets.

Bottle pour into tulip glass...poured a slightly cloudy golden-amber-orange color, very beautiful. One finger of bubbly white head that leaves spotty lacing. Aromas of juicy oranges and tangerines, pineapple and tropical notes, some pine, fantastic! The taste follows suit with juicy citrus, oranges and tangerines and grapefruit, tropical fruits, pine notes and some caramel malts as well. Medium and juicy mouthfeel. This beer is absolutely outstanding. Get it now while it's fresh!

22oz bottle poured into shaker. Slightly hazed golden body with a thin sticky white head. Aroma is citrusy, dank hops and caramel malts. Taste has more pine than the nose but is still citrusy in its strong hop bitterness. A touch of sweetness is all that comes through. I’m getting a little band-aid phenol, too. Medium body, creamy texture, moderate carbonation, and a dry, bitter finish.

A stunning IPA. With so many intricately hopped doubles out there -- many at quite high prices -- this stands out. From my point of view it is simply perfect. From the color to the initial nose to all stages of the sip and swallow it is exactly what I want in this type of beer. Knee Deep's Simtra, for example, in my opinion is a wonderful beer that does not go A to Z in the way this does. Apex has not a moment where I think it could be better or different. For DIPAs I'll still take Hop Stoopid over ANYTHING for value ($3.99 at TJs!!), but this is my new favorite beer (and first, lame, review!).

A: The beer is relatively clear amber yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high white head that died down but mostly left a thin head covering the surface, a collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides.
S: The smell has moderately strong initial aromas of tropical fruits followed by notes of citrusy hops. Hints of pine also become noticeable once the beer warms up.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has flavors of citrus and tropical fruit hops, although the citrus seems to stand out stronger and there are hints of alcohol towards the finish. Only a light amount of bitterness is noticeable, but this becomes stronger as it warms. As in the smell, hints of piney hops start to appear once the beer warms up.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The hops in this IPA smelled and tasted very fresh and provided an interesting mix of flavors, although I preferred the predominant tropical fruit hops when the beer was cold. Nonetheless, this is a pleasant beer to sip and savor the changes in aromas and flavors as its temperature changes.

Thank you blind tiger- pours a clear golden amber with a finger and a half of head, good retention and lacing.

Smells incredible- great fresh pine scent. A little base malt.

Tasted amazing also- big pine hop character but not too bitter. Nice balance of flavors but very very hoppy.

Mouthfeel is great- medium body, modestly carbonated. This ones a keeper.

Bomber. Gold color, creamy white head with a lace that sticks. Dank, resinous, floral, pine, and grain in the nose with esters, apple must, and rind. A bit crisp upfront with a firm, malty body. Sweet, toasty and caramel. Deceivingly soft alcohol presence. Hops are quite aggressive. Grassy, pineapple, more grass, orange and rinds, hint of onion, raw, dank, ashy, dry finish with an earthy and woody linger. And man does it linger. I'll be smacking my palate for hours.

Summary: A kick-ass DIPA.

It's the look you'd want your IPA to have. A cloudy orange pour with some darker brown notes mixed in because of the haze. The head is a stunner with it's bright white color and meringue-like peaks. Starts off a finger and a half thick, retains well, and leaves a bit of lacing behind.

You can smell the citrus the second you pop the cap. Grapefruit, pineapple, and orange rind fill the room. In the background, dank pine lurks. Amazing.

Hop forward, as you might guess. Like the smell, you get more citrus than pine, and I welcome that. The pineapple helps take this beer to the top. Whatever malts are used are completely an afterthought, because the west coast hops rule here.

As smooth as any IPA I've ever had, and that goes for Pliny . Yes, smooth. Bitter, but not a palate wrecker. Sweet and tangy up front from the citrus notes, then the bitterness starts to evolve. So easy to drink despite high ABV. Full bodied.

I may be being too harsh, this could be a 5. It really is world class and is easily as good a beer as anyone will ever have.

Bomber from Gator Beverage. Pours beautiful clear orange gold with a big fluffy slightly off white head. Lots of citrus on the aroma, mango, orange peel, grapefruit zest, pineapple, with sweetness in the backdrop from the malts. Flavor is mango grapefruit up front with a surprising punch of rich fruity caramel malts throughout. Big body, resinous, with medium prickle on the carbonation. Nearly syrupy and I was hoping for a brighter hop profile with a more subdued malt backbone. Nonetheless this is yummy.

A: a lighter caramel color, fairly hazy. S: very floral and pine T: grapefruit citrus but also sweet, not too bitter but not to sweet syrupy M: Perfection, not light and crisp but not thick and syrupy either. Nice carbonation and bitterness that leaves your mouth fresh and ready for the next taste. O: Awesome, I love racer 5 but this is even better. This is what racer x should have been. Pretty close to heady topper even! Will always pick this up when I see it.

"Apex: The highest point, the culmination or climax. In racing, the apex of the turn is approached differently as conditions dictate, but always with a forward looking mindset. This beer is the culmination of years of brewing and drinking hop forward IPAs. We reserved the right to move forward, to advance the style to the next Apex." Brewed in the style of an American Imperial IPA. Available as a late winter seasonal in 22 oz. bottles and on draft.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a tulip glass. Served above 53º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy cream head of a pastel white color over a moderately hazy copper-orange body with fine sediment. Retention is very good and lacing is medium-thick and spotty. 4.75

(Smell) Biscuity grain malt, pale caramel sweetness and a dash of light bready rye for a touch of depth and body. Big bold aromas of juicy grapefruit, bright citrus zest and peppery hops build a strong hop profile with a moderate bitterness. Overall a very aromatic and bright aroma with a ton of enjoyable character. Potency is medium-high. 4.25

(Taste) The malt profile keeps fairly thin, with a lightly toasted caramel malt, a pinch of biscuity grain and a fairly mellow, if not understated sweetness. The hop profile holds up fairly well- strong citrus and peppery hop notes are the most prolific, whereas the zesty grapefruit takes a backseat. The hop bitterness is fairly accessible, likely mild for the seasoned DIPA drinker but fairly striking overall. The beer finishes dry with pithy grapefruit rind and an assertive bitterness. While the flavors aren't as impressively complex as the aroma predicted, the end result is still fantastic. 4

(Mouthfeel) The texture is light, thinly syrupy and clean. Carbonation contributes to a mild frothiness, lightening up the body a notch but not making anything alarmingly crisp. Body is light/medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is moderately bitter over sweet with a pronounced cleanliness and no off-characters. Alcohol presence is low. 4.5

(Overall) Bear Republic is one of my choice representatives of well-constructed, affordable and flavorful west coast IPAs. Although Apex doesn't quite hit the hop and bitterness highs of more hyped DIPAs, it is an excellent beer in its own. Not all that far from Racer 5 IPA, perhaps turned up a notch or two in flavor and intensity, it finds an excellent niche between the demands for flavor, bitterness and drinkability. Definitely worth a try. 4.5
