2/23/19 - Had a 2014 vintage at the 2019 Mad Fox Barley Wine Festival. No change in my review. A decent but not outstanding barley wine.
------
On tap at the 2018 Mad Fox Barley Wine Festival. A 2013 vintage. Poured into a 4oz fluted taster.
A very malty start with a dry herbal hopped finish. 3.5
A - Pours a brownish cloudy orange. - 3.75
S - Aromas of barley malt sweetness. Not hoppy. 3.75
T - Spirits are there but not overwhelming. Caramel and brown sweet bread maltiness. 3.75
MF - Heavy body dry finish. Warming. Some might say a bit hot. 3.75

Orange pour yielded almost not head. Aroma hit the boozy yet appropriate for strength notes, as well as caramel and toffee.
This one was pretty old, I think it was getting close to 7-10 years, had those old hop vintage bitter notes, some citrus, more sweetness. Carbonation was low, oxidation was in a nice place. Earthiness in the mouthfeel.

Nice malt sweet entry. Cooked caramel. Golden raisin and fig fruitiness from the malts. Has a similar malt profile to racer 5, but obviously amped way up. Hops are piney, slightly danky, earthy, hints of tropical/pineapple are noted. Clean bitterness pokes it head out at plates end, lingers just a touch. Pleasant, creamy finish wraps this brew up. Carbonation was appropriate. Body was slightly chewy. Alcohol was covered well. Mine was gone before I knew it. A great example of an American B-wine.

Had on tap. The smell is malty and sweet caramel, some pine with a slight basement dankness to it, odd. The rest of the beer is very ho-hum, with the taste featuring caramel malt, booze, some light hops, toast, and some herbal undertones. Feel is a touch thin and bright for the style.

Sampled at Snallygaster 2014. Great taste, very smooth, a bit hot.
