On tap at the brewpub in Healdsburg. Dark black color, ample head. Aroma was malts, grains, typical irish stout aroma. Flavor was slightly chalky, dry, dark malts. Overall not a bad beer but not one I'd go out of my way to try again. Just above average.

(From notes - nitro-tap at Rattle N Hum 5/15/09)
A - Deep mahogany, near black color. Light tan cap of a head that looked like it had been painted on top of the brew. Great retention and curtains of lacing throughout the sample
S - Pretty muted aromas; some dry roasted maltiness and perhaps a whiff of some dark fruits....not much going on here
T - Roasted maltiness, but not overly so. Hint of graininess, and a very dry finish
M - Smooth, creamy, but at the same time quite a light body.
D - Satisfying in all the right ways, and very much expected for what I would want in the style.
Overall, more than worth a look and was a great chance to try a more 'traditional' American-made stout as it was a break from the extreme.

On nitro at Rattle n Hum. Whipped up black coffee and cream appearance.Lots of lace. No overt fragerance. Creamy mouthfeel as expected, and notes of chocolate and mocha. Decent stout, not too dry but not too complex.passable stout. Roast not that well integrated.

Presentation - Nitro-tapped into a glass at the brewpub.
Appearance - Black as night, with a light tan or perhaps cream colored head of two and a half fingers, no doubt from the nitro. Bubbles continue to rise from nucleation sites in the glass for many minutes, both carbon dioxide and what I'm assuming is nitrogen traveling in tiny, miniscule ass bubbles up the wall of the glass. Head retreats every so slowly, leaving robust lacing on the walls of the glass.
Smell - A burnt/roasted smell is prominent, followed by toasted smells, a breadiness, and perhaps a fruit or two.
Taste - A bit more one-dimensional than the smell. It seems like it can't decide whether to taste toasted, roasted, or burnt, and so muddles through somewhere in between, but lacking the subtleties possible with either or a combination in conjunction. No fruits to detect. There's definitely bitter chocolate note, but the bitterness persisted into the aftertaste. A tiny bit of coffee as well.
Mouthfeel - Creamy and delicious. No other words for it. the nitro actually enhances this beer. It's a different type of smooth than say oatmeal stout, but it's there for sure. There's a medium body, a mild dryness, and a medium carbonation to accompany the nitro creaminess.
Drinkability - I could put down a few thanks to the nitro-tap creaminess and the reasonably delicious flavor, but would I want to? Probably not. This is a solid stout, don't get me wrong, certainly better than Guinness or Murphys or Beamish, but there's better stouts out there for sure.

This is my first review on here. This beer begged to be reviewed and up to this point it is the best stout I've ever had. Filled up a couple of pint glasses of this brew at Jupiter in Berkeley, California and from the first sip I couldn't have enough of it.
Appearance : Dark dark dark. You can't see through this thing. Wonderful fluffy nitro head, cocoa-like foam hangs on the glass.
Smell: Sweet milk chocolate and strong dark coffee
Taste: Roasted coffee, a sweet almost milk chocolate candy bar taste is there as well. The sweetness is like that of molasses.
Mouthfeel: Wonderfully smooth.
Drinkability: Up to this point I have not ventured into stouts because I thought they would be hard to finish. This beer has changed my mind, it's very very drinkable. Absolutely loved this beer.

Pour: nitro-tap to pint glass. Ordered this while dining at the brewpub, the beer came to the table with a finger of thick tan head over an opaque black body. No visible bubbles within the body. Head retention was nice and long and left decent lacings behind.
Nose: Roasted malts come through nice and hefty, some red grapes, chocolate and coffee.
Mouth: Much like the nose, but the roastiness is stronger in the flavor. Excellent mouthfeel, light and smooth and chewy all at once. Burnt toast and roasted coffee bean flavor in the back and sweeter malts in the front. I can't wait for them to bottle this one.
