Notes/Commercial Description:
Rebellion was created by Bear Republic's brewers as a single hop pale ale to showcase the characteristics of new hop varietals and old favorites. Always brewed with the same American and English malts, the soft malt character allows the unique flavor and aroma of the hop to shine.

Poured from tap at Horse Brass Pub in Portland:

Pours with a decent head fading to a good lace, nice copper hue. Great nose with tons of hops, yeast, pine, and some damp forest floor notes (you know what I'm taking about right!) Very interesting but not one that I would consider overly amazing.

32oz growler @ Deciccio's market in Ardsley, NY, pours typical nice looking amber, pretty clear, moderate, loose off white/light tan head, leaves plenty of sheeting and then blotches of lace, nose is oh so hoppy...Nice Cally style ale, plenty of grainy hopping, riding over a smooth layer of moderatly sweet malts. Fresh and tasty, with a long hoppy/dry finish...love the BR brews- hope to get out there for a visit and a swim in the Russian River someday soon....well worth a try

A- Bright orangish copper, with a fluffy head that laced the glass all the way to the bottom

S- Fresh spruce, and sweet baking bread

T- Hop Attack! An herbal, resinous hop flavor with some sweetness from the crackery malt, but the finish is pure hop oil

M- Medium, but clean without a overly oily or thick

D- Despite the unbalance nature of the this beer, which would probably be better described as an AIPA, it was very tasty and I would definitely enjoy another if I ever see it again.

I don't know what hop variety I had since it was not stated on the beer menu or tap list.

On tap at Bear Republic's brewpub. Pours a clear orange, a little bit darker than I'm preferring right now but the smell is amazing. As an all-simcoe IPA it delivers that fruity, juicy simcoe aroma. I can almost see how some people describe this as similar to "cat-pee." The taste was big in pine, fruit, juicy hops. Fairly bitter finish. Very good beer overall. I loved the sample I had of it, and then worked through a pint. While I enjoyed the pint, it was something I thought was much better in a smaller sample.

On tap @ the blind tiger 02-07-09

Pours a hazy orange color with a 2 finger head, lacing is ok, nothing special. The nose has the grapefruit, piney hops that one would expect from an IPA. Taste is pretty well balanced. I think the hops are a little more present in this one than the Racer 5. Pretty well bite from start to finish, def. a session IPA. the mouthfeel is of pine/citrus, again not overwellmening. Another good bear from bear republic

On-tap into pint glass.

Clear, slightly hazy amber hue. One finger off-white head that settles to a thin cap. Rings of lacing. Lots of floral and citrusy hops. The grains give a light caramel aroma. The grains are toasty in the flavor, along with plenty of grapefruit in the flavor. Full bodied, thick, average carbonation (at a good level).

A very enjoyable IPA. Recommended.

Pours a slightly hazy copper color. White rocky head. Good retention and lace.

Floral and pine resin seem to dominate the nose. Maybe a bit of tropical fruit.

Good malt base. Lots of pine resin. Hints of grapefruit and other citrus. A bit floal at the end.

Good body, and appropriate carbonation. Not overly bitter, but aggressive. Very nice.

Bear Republic Rebellion is a series of beers, each is an American IPA that is hopped with a single hop varietal. Each version has the same base malts and IBUS. This version is 100% Citra. Not unlike the Mikkeller Singe Hop IPAs, each version is a distinct beer and should be listed as such.

Rebellion pours a dark golden orange with a finger of dense creamy head that left rings of thick lacing as I drank the pint down. The aroma had elements of apricots, pine, earth, and candied oranges. The taste had stone fruit, earth, pine, tingy bitterness with a rustic tropical fruit twang and a nice earthy and caramel malt finish. Medium bodied with a prickly carbonation that went well with the bitterness. This full flavored IPA really gave some nice fruit and earth from the Citra hops, this was really good and it is a brew I could easily knock back a few pints of, clean and delicious.

picked up a 32oz growler @ deciccios - poured a clear amber/orange and put up a nice pillowy 2 finger head that held on and left some nice lacing on the way down - hoppy aroma smells like it's coming out of the woods - tastes resiny and the simcoe hops provide some ibu punch - an earthy and citrussy
finish - this went down fine, ok stuff.

On tap at Rattle n' Hum, NYC.

Poured a medium copper hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured earthy and peppery hops.

The taste consisted of an upfront earthy hop (maybe Simcoe) and a moderate doughy malt.

The mouthfeel was toward the fuller side of the style.

Overall a tasty and clean hop forward IPA.

Glass on tap at Cole's in Buffalo. This BA entry seems confusing since there are many different varieties of Rebellion all in one place.... the one I had was the all Amarillo variety.

Arrives a hazy golden yellow with whisps of head drifting around on top, light lacing down the glass. Doesn't really look like an amber this version...

Leafy, grapefruit, orange rind aroma drift up to meet my expectant nose - not much disappointment here, if anything I just wanted more of it.

A deep grapefruit bitterness, like sucking on the pulp, bit of leafiness, lemon, not over the top hopping but quite delightful. Very fresh tasting, prickly carb, easy to drink and leaves you wanting more, and with the lower-ish ABV you could easily drink a few. Superb summer IPA, would love to have this on tap close by.

This was on tap at the Amsterdam Ale house as a part of New York City Craft Beer week. Great copper color, good bitterness, great carbonation and good mouthfeel and drinkabiltiy. It was great to see all these beers on the east coast and I will definitely be going back for another today.

On tap at Deep Ellum, Allston MA. Simcoe version.

Dark, orangey gold with a large white head. Lace and retention aplenty. Ah, the magic of simcoe. Citrus, piney hop aroma. Very fragrant but not fragrant enough to cover aroma of a smelly guy that sat next to me halfway through this beer. Dry, but goes well with the Simcoe though.

Good stuff.

The pub beer list said the brewers were experimenting with some differnt hop varietals on this beer. The makers of Racer 5 and X plus their amazing Red Rocket and Hop Rod beers should not try to over do it. This beer wasn't bad but did not quite live up to Bear Republic excellence either. Color was a deep gold, head was lasting and left nice lacing. Hops were in the aroma but it was mostly grainy malt. Finish was long and crsip, hops were not citrusy like Racer 5. Can't say that I liked or disliked the hop taste, but I will say I prefer what they use in Racer 5. If you like to try different beers than I say it's worth it, if not stick with Racer 5.
