ON tap at Hollingshead's in Orange CA - served in German stein. Deep amber color - very much to style. Little head on this one. Nose seems muted...a bit of sweet malts.

Nice, crisp entry - sweet, apple malty taste jumps in...builds out biscuit. A little bit of spicy component - probably from a light hop bill. This works - provides plenty of flavor and hits on most of what you expect for style...and just a little more - a little more in mouthfeel and bittering (though not very bitter - just more than most O'fests)

Nice beer with food.

Served in a pint glass for $5.75. Sampled 11/9/10.

A: Arrives with a half finger of off-white head that disappears quickly leaving only a thin foamy lace behind. Spare scraps of lace cling to the glass but look like they'll be sliding back down soon. The body has a amber-brown appearance and is 60% opaque

S: The nose is pretty safe and boringly lager-like. Low level of grassy, floral hops. Caramelly malts. Somewhat steely. The twist comes once the beer opens up a bit, bringing in aromas of orangey-lemony zest to compliment the light tang.

T: My first sip tasted oddly reminiscent of what the inside of a refrigerator, I'd imagine, would taste like. The rating here started at 1.5 and thankfully improved by two full points as the tanginess begins to pull out the combination of flavors.

M: Medium body with an absolutely perfect level of carbonation, lively and tingling. Finishes crisply.

D: [DRINKABILITY] While the beer is ok, the scores suffer because there is nothing interesting to offer here. Surely Bear Republic can do better than this. Nothing offensive, just nothing special either.

On tap at the Blind Tiger, NYC.

Poured a deep copper hue with a half finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell featured solid sweet malt with a touch of flowery hops.

The taste consisted of robust sweet malt, some honey and caramel. Some flowery hops cleaned up the flavor.

The mouthfeel was toward the fuller side of the style.

Overall a tasty and robust beer.

I had a sixteen ounce draft of this at the Amsterdam Ale House in Manhattan's Upper West Side. It was a great Octoberfest, one of my favorites, I believe. Dark caramel color with a good amount of carbonation (a couple of inches). Smell was of german malt with a very slight hop aroma. Flavor was great, slight dark fruit but not so much to be unrefreshing. I was able to enjoy this a number of times over the month.

A: Dark Amber with red highlights, a little cloudy, persistent thin tan head.

S: Sweet fruit notes of tangy apricot and ripe banana, lots of earthy and herbal hops notes.

T: Very balanced for Bear Republic. Good malt character up front with flavors of tangy apricot, earthy fig. The hops kick in mid palette with earthy flavors and finish with a crisp bitterness.

M: Rich creamy mouthfeel up front with small bubble carbonation on finish.

D: A balance and flavorful beer, pretty mild and drinkable for Bear Republic. There is too much lingering hops bitterness for my tastes.

On tap at Capone's.

Pours a medium brown with some rusty int. Nice off white head and moderate lacing. Smell is a bit plain with some doughy malts and hints of herbal hops. Taste is better as the malt becomes pronounced and picks up some slight caramel flavors and lots of bread. Hops are of the earthy, herbal variety. Mouthfeel is nice--light to medium body with good carbonation. Good drinkability and one of the better Marzens I've had, which seems to be happening more lately.

Pint on tap at The Drafting Room in Springhouse, PA.

Poured a medium and cloudy amberish color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of toastiness, grainy, citrus, and some wet leaves. Tastes of grains, citrus, some toastiness, and caramel. Lighter earthiness too.

A-Brilliant copper with medium creamy white head that reduced to a thin ring and left spotty lace.

S-Light fruity (green apple) notes with hints of sweet biscuit and a bit of citrus.

T-Sharp fruity and floral hop character with caramel malt sweetness and biscuit muscle, resulting in a well-balanced flavour. A bit of honey sweetness in the finish

M-Medium body quite sharp with a crisp finsih.

D-Bear Republic makes quality brews and this one is no exception. An excellent hopped up marzen with plenty of flavour and body to keep things interesting and quaffable. Very nice indeed.

Had on tap in a standard pint glass. Pours hazy dark amber with a small off white head.

Smells malty and sweet. The sweet seems to be a defining characteristic of this beer to me. Lots of malt but almost a sugary nose.

Taste follows suit with a malty flavor, nonexistant hops and a lingering sweet taste.

Mouth feel, despite smelling sweet, is not very heavy. Actually this pint went down pretty fast.

Overall, seems like it would be a good beer for people who aren't into hops. It's malty with no bitterness. It's good but I'm not sure if I would order it again though. It would have to be along with a pretty sad draught list.

On tap at 515 in Santa Cruz. Clear amber pour with a nice fluffy khaki head. Nice malty and grainy aroma, grains and biscuits with a grassy spicy hop profile. Flavor is bready malts, toasted grains, and caramel with a lightly citric and grassy hoppiness that takes over in the finish. A very full-flavored, well-balanced lager. Super drinkable.

Had on draft, this beer had a nice puffy white head, a solid small-bubbled mass. Displayed good retention, pretty good lacing. Cloudy to the point of being nearly opaque, the beer itself was a light muddy brown with hints of yellow and orange.

Fittingly subdued aroma for a lager. Grains, some spice. Light caramel malt.

Goodness, is this really from Bear Republic? While I generally like their offerings, I had lately become a bit concerned that each of their beers - no matter the style - seemed to have big, standout hoppiness. Not so here, though there is a nice, subtle hop profile. Chocolate malts, as well as hints of caramel. Nuts and grains. Hops evidence themselves some light citrus and leafiness. With the malts, the citrus presents itself as a sweet orange. Finishes fairly dry.

Medium bodied with strong carbonation. Goes down easily. Smooth, befitting a good lager, with a very full flavor.

Thanks to tenderbranson69 for sharing this growler w/ me. Poured chilled into a double walled tumbler.

A golden brown w/ minimal white rign for head which clings to the glass leaving a wispy pattern on the surface of the beer.

S - A sweet malt aroma w/ caramel fruity notes. The nose has subtle nut odors w/ toasted essence that has a biscuity hint.

M - A moderately full feel w/ toasted texture, slight dry malt feel w/ moderate carbonation and a minimal spiciness. The sweet malt elements contrast the dry earhtiness well

T - Dry toast and sweet malty layers are nice showing a complexity you may not see in most American lagers of this style. The flavor combo has subtle twiggy hop flavors that parallel the toasted grain and yeast flavors. The texture is almost a standout here with the flavors coming in later in echoes.

The drinkability is very good w/ a abv you wouldn't guess from tasting this. The flavors are subtle, perhaps even subdued, but as you drink more the malts really begin to shine and encourage repeated tastes.

Pours a slightly hazy dark copper color with ruby red edges and a one finger off-white head that slowly settles into a lasting ring.  Streaks of lace left behind.

Floral, earthy hop aroma with a surprisingly strong malt backbone.  Grassy with subtle pine needle character countered by a strong caramel malt presence as well as some  toffee and biscuit.

On the fuller end of medium bodied with a stronger hop presence than the aroma suggests.  Still has a very strong malt profile which dominates the flavor.  Really surprising coming from this brewery.  Slightly dank and sticky but the hop flavor is a touch one dimensional and is overpowered by sweet and slightly roasted malt notes.  Grassy and floral with some dry bitterness countered by prominent caramel malt flavor, toast, toffee and biscuit.  The ABV is well masked making it easy to drink but it's a bit bland for my liking.
