Another unique Rye beer from BRBC, this Double IPA is brewed with large quantities of American hops and fermented with a Belgian ale yeast to create a bitter, hoppy, and spicy ale that is sure to delight.

Served in a tulip glass at the brewery. From notes. Reviewed 28 April 2012.
A: Hazy-clear gold. Light head.
S: Sweet malts, touch of citrus, floral Belgian yeast. Soft, but pleasant.
T: Wow...Full-bodied, spicy, and incredibly rewarding. Honey-sweet with loads of hops and spicy rye (though I suspect the yeast is responsible for most of the spice). Cloves and clover. Excellent mouthfeel.
O: Perfectly crafted. A Belgian Double Rye Pale Ale? Pretty crazy. Whole-heartedly recommended. Will drink again. [note: I did end up ordering two more tulips. My favourite Bear Republic beer to date.]

Ryevalry on cask at Pony Bar in Hell's Kitchen, NYC.
Appearance: Freshly tapped cask, a little cold but fine. The head came looking ALIVE! Viscous bubbles moving in a swamp. After it settles, it is more of a classic IPA, with the amber-ruby color and some haziness.
Smell: Rich and unique, reminds me of a winery in Spain. Very vinous and liquor-like. Domaine de Canton, sweetness, liquorice and fennel. Complex, enticing!
Taste: The rye comes through in the mouth, bringing thoughts of the Bulleit Rye I had a couple of days before. Then the spice, like honey melted on bone marrow and licked by an anteater. I don't get much of those hops, but a lot of flowery aromas, clover, allspice. I could cook with this! Olive oil at the end, unctuous.
Mouthfeel: Even for a cask, this comes with very low carbonation. It still is nice and fit for the style, with medium body and almost full flavor. Grainy and spicy as it goes down, sort of a rye bourbon with sugar added.
Overall: I really enjoyed this. It's got enough complexity to go beyond the boring-IPA-on-cask thing. The rye is well played and the sweetness is balanced. This!
