On tap in a shaker pint back in May 2010. I see there are only 4 reviews for this before mine, 3 of which are from SC; are we the dumping ground for hodgepodge beers? Ha.

Deep brown with lighter brown highlights and a modest tan head. Sparse sticky lacing. Nose is pretty straightforward roast and cocoa, with a hint of fruitiness underneath. Tastes pretty much the same as it hits the tongue, but gets very tangy and raisinish toward the swallow. A bit of dry roast kicks in at the tail end of the finish, but only after the tanginess dies down.

Overall impression: Was getting tired of this by the end of one pint. Let's see if End '10 is any better.

Thanks to CBX for helping me get ahold of this one. I decided to crack it open with the rest of the lineup last night. Served cold and poured into several pint glasses, this one was consumed on 06/26/2010.

Really nice look here as the dark as liquid rolls out of the growler and into the glass with the look of oil and a huge, three inch head of dark chocolate colored foam rises up from the bottom. Quite omnious and full looking as the lacing thoroughly coated the rest of the glass.

Aroma is deep smoke, campfire notes, touchs of burnt caramel, molasses, rich dark chocolate and hints of coffee. Really nicely put together. Flavor seems to be a little one sided as the smoke notes are dominating every around them, blinding the chocolate and coffee presence from really being felt well. Lighter feel then I would have hoped as it id not have enough body to really coat the palate, but still nicely carbonated and went down quickly and easily.

Really nice flavors and look here, just needed a little bit moe body and that may have distracted from the flavor. Still nice beer.

Served from tap into a standard pint. Poured black as can be with a minimal tan head present. It maintained nice lacing throughout. The aroma was comprised of roasted malt, caramel, and coffee. The flavor was of coffee and malt only. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was not a bad brew. It had a really nice smooth finish to. Bear Republic has yet to let me down yet. This one is worth trying if you can get your hands on it.

On-tap at Barley's Taproom for around $4.50

A: Pours an opaque solid black color with a small mocha color head. Retention is average at best, lasting for only a minute or two.

S: Kind of bland...chocolate, molasses, toffee, slight vanilla, and a twang from either dark fruits or citric hops.

T: Again, a little plain and watery. Malt focused for sure; fudge, chocolate, vanilla, dark fruits (slightly sour dark cherries? or blackberries). Hops give a slight kick, but are otherwise discrete.

MF/D: Lighter in body, a little sour or twangy at the end...not too impressed with Bear Republic stouts thus far.

Thanks to Charleston Beer Exchange for getting this bad boy on tap. It's great when they bring beers like these in. Rare beer Tuesdays rock!

Beer has a decent appearance, with a thick tan head. Head thins out after a little while to a thin lacing. Smell has hints of chocolate, slight vanilla, molasses, and hops. Taste is very malty, chocolate up front, slight vanilla in the back, and a tiny hint of hops on the finish. A good beer for when it's cooler out, but still pretty drinkable none the less.
