01/16/13 On tap at Rattle n Hum, NYC. Follows a Unibroue Eau Benite abbey triple which is like witnessing a AAA player at the plate in the majors for the first time.

There is something worthy of attention here, but I'm temporarily distracted. Shows my shortcomings as an objective person.

In the desert island scenario this would not be the one, but if a case washed ashore I'd fashion a bottle opener.

Served on-draught at Haven Brewpub in Pasadena into a 14oz stem-tulip. Cost was $6.00. Reviewed from notes. 4.7% ABV confirmed. Reviewed as an Enkel (that’s what it is).

A: Pours a two finger wide head of white colour, nice cream, and nice thickness. Good (4-5 minute) retention. Even lacing.

Body colour is a clear vibrant gold. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Quite appealing for the style.

Sm: Quite grainy. Very light restrained floral hop character. Light caramalt. Biscuit malt. Deep and evocative. Biscuity rich yeasty notes. Redolent of Belgian examples of the style. Cream. A mild to moderate strength aroma.

T: Lovely stuff. Biscuit malt, biscuit yeast. Grainy. Minimal floral hop character. Flowery notes. Lilac. Balanced and pleasant. Good subtlety – but not as much as Belgian examples of the style. Quite tasty. A bit too clean and clinical for the style; better enkels/patersbiers are yeastier and more rustic. Good complexity and build for what it is.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Good body. Refreshing. Suits the flavor profile well. Good thickness. I quite like the execution.

Dr: A well executed American attempt at one of the scarcest styles there is. I’d get it again, but it does fall well short of superior Belgian examples. Hides its modest ABV well. Good try, Bear Republic, but it lacks the rustic intricacy required of a great Enkel. Chimay Doree this is not.

On tap at Congregation Ale House in Long Beach, CA.

Pours a clear yellow with a foamy bone head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, fruit, and banana aromas. Taste is much the same with a fake banana flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but there is a weird fruit-like presence in this one.

A: The beer is hazy yellowish amber in color and has no signs of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin white head that slowly faded away.
S: There are light aromas of fruits and hints of spices in the nose.
T: The overall taste is quite fruity and has some notes of clove and orange peel.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a bit of dryness in the finish.
O: With its low alcohol content, this beer is easy to drink and sessionable.

On tap at Public House, poured into a nonic glass. Bartender called this a Single but that is pretty much a Belgian pale ale when brewed by any non trappiste brewer. Poured a golden yellow color, mostly clear, with a half a finger of white foamy head. Head retention was moderate, as it slowly receded to a bubbly collar after a few minutes, leaving some light lacing that slowly slipped back into the surface. Very well carbonated based on the many small bubbles floating up through the beer.

Nose is a very earthy and herbal hops and light biscuit malt. Fairly one dimensional.

Taste followed the nose, light earthy and herbal hop bitterness upfront then a light biscuit malt sweetness to finish clean.

Light bodied and nicely carbonated. Very light on the tongue and at such a low abv, easily sessionable. While flavors are pretty bland, good enough to be refreshing and should go nicely as counter to rich food.

On-tap at Beachwood I,

A: Pours goldenrod with a nice cap of white foam, lots of sticky frothy lace. Very good head retention.

S: Notes of bread, earthy and herbal hops, light barnyard.

T: Nice solid estery yeast flavours. Sugar cane, pear and banana along with a lot of sourdough bread. Never really full-flavoured, but certainly tasty.

M: Light-bodied, soft carbonation, creamy, refereshing.

O: A good solid light Belgian-style beer. Good for a hot spring day like today.

Beautiful tawny amber color in the tall tulip with a firm head. Biscuits and wine in the nose. Fuller bodied than you'd expect. Modest funky notes with a pleasantly scratchy taste of Belgian yeast. But overall, a milder Saison sort of brew.

The touch of bitterness stretches out to the finish. Modest malty sweetness and finishes on the dry side. Pleasant spritzy mouthful. Not much aroma. More subtle than a lot of Belgian-flavored beers.

Quite agreeable and makes a tangy quaff. On tap at Local Habit in San Diego. The 12 oz glass is $6.50.
