On tap at Skylark Lounge, labeled as Glacial Grind Coffee Porter.

This one pours a thin-looking dark brown, with a small wispy head and no lacing.

Smells kind of tepid, with a little bit of weak old coffee flavor, and not much going on with the base itself- it just feels water, and uninspired. This is not one of Wagner Valley's best beers by bar.

This is watery and quite thin, with a normal level of carbonation.

I'm not incredibly impressed with this one.

Part of a flight at the brewery. Pours a deep, dark brown - almost but not quite black. Thin light tan head. Initial impression is coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate, roasted malts, and a light touch of caramel sweetness. Mouthfeel is kind of thin; carbonation is slightly on the heavy side. Finish is surprisingly neutral, with neither sweetness nor coffee dominating. Overall, it was OK but there are much better porters out there.

Poured into a pint glass at the Bronx Alehouse.

A: Dark lack with brown tints, excellent two finger head with sticky lace falling quickly to fingertip thin. Great carbonation even though looks like a cup of coffee.

S: Earthy tints mingled with sweet malt minor coffee accent

T: Very sweet and following the subdued nature of the coffee part. Chalky aftertaste but overall quite smooth

M: Medium to thin, works well with this 100+ heat.

D: The boys from Lodi have done a grett job on this one. Not too heavy or bitter and a nice sweet finish

This brew was a bit of a disappointment, after the pour and the aroma, expectations were high. To be fair, it was one of the better porters I've had, but porters are under-represented in the market today, in my opinion... Anyway, on to the beer. Looks nearly black with about a 3/8" caramel colored head from a vigorous pour. Aroma is excellent, of roasted coffee and toffee. Flavor is also coffee, slightly burnt, toffee and malt with a hint of hops that was a bit distracting. Very little lacing, needs more carbonation and a bit too thin on mouthfeel, but very drinkable, and an excellent value as well. I'll buy it again.

Starting at the end, this was a solid beer. Perhaps the most coffee-like coffee porter I've ever had. According to the official description of this beer they use a special expresso blend from the Ithaca Coffee Company. I definately appreciate the use of a local product to support a local product.

Unfortunately, it was served to me in a plastic cup. I tried to ignore the serving unit when I thought about the appearance but it is hard to appreciate a hand-crafted beer that is carelessly presented in a plastic party cup. Anyway, the head was quite limited but there was some nice lacing on the sides of the cup. In a normal glass, carefully poured, I can imagine this would have looked amazing. The color was a medium to dark brown. The color made it very inviting.

As I expected, there is a pleasent coffee aroma that has cocoa hints and a nice balance of malts. Very inviting. I could almost drink this for breakfast.

The taste was similar to the smell. Coffee, hints of cocoa and maltiness. It has some bitterness to it as well. It may have been a hair too bitter for me to call it right on. Perhaps the fact that it was extremely cold contributed to this. In the future I'd let it warm up a little bit to get the full flavor.

It felt generally good on the mouth. Perhaps a hair too carbonated. The feeling of bitterness (different than taste) on my tongue was nice and reminded me of drinking a rich, dark cup of coffee (the lingering of bitterness).

With the style in mind, if this was served at the perfect temperature with an actual glass, I'd have to say this would be a very drinkable beer. Not something you could do sessions with, but definately a tasty treat from time to time.
