Appearance: Dark black with a light tan head and nice lacing. An intimidating looking beer.
Smell: Hoppy up front with notes of roasted malts and caramel. I would've like a touch more hops aroma though.
Taste: Hoppy and surprisingly refreshing considering the roasted malts. Hop bitterness is nicely balanced with slight roastiness. It really is like a double IPA that's been turned black.
Mouthfeel: Excellently carbonated. Full feel to it but not so much as a thick stout so it retains its refreshing quality nicely.
Overall: A great example of a more IPA-ish black IPA. Subtle roast notes increased flavor depth but don't turn it into a porter. Very good, and drinkable over and over, which at 8.7% abv could be a problem...
