Pours a deep amber with lifeless head and slight murkiness. The smell starts hop forward which competes with the barrel character. The hops bring on some vegetal notes which dominate the aroma. A bit of vanilla, caramel, and bourbon are present with a booziness coming through towards the end. The taste is hop forward with significant bitterness. There is vanilla and oak present, but like the nose, it doesn't meld with the hop profile very well. There is a bit of unpleasant heat towards the end. Mouthfeel is full with moderate carbonation. Overall, this was an unimpressive barleywine. Perhaps some age will improve this brew.
