On tap at the brewpub on 7/22/12

Irresponsible tick #2

A) Very cloudy, pondy rust with some rotten orange. Thin layer of foam with thicker ring retention. Thick, droopy lace.

S) Aromas of caramel, earthy hops, soft bread and candy citrus.

T/M) The thin feel has a tough time with the short-tempered pine bursts. Ample carbonation. Sweet bread, caramel and candied fruit sugars round out the middle before the finish turns bitter again. Orange peel emerges as it warms.

D) This one is really rough around the edges.

Had on tap at Blind Pig in Champaign. Served in a pint glass.

A: Pours a very deep purple and red mixture with a nice, 1 finger off white head. It clings to glass like webs creating a beautiful looking beer.

S: I was so hyped up by how great the beer looked that the nose was a little bit of a let down. It wasn't bad, but didn't excite me. Bready malts with a subtle grapefruit and sweet berry. Pretty typical.

T: The was slightly better with some sweeter, caramel malt notes and light hoppiness to it. Also present were some notes of grapefruit and a touch of sweet berry.

M: Ample carbonation with a medium bodie and sticky sweet finish.

O: The was a decent red, but there wasn't anything that really caught my eye. Right about par for the style.

APPEARANCE: This beer was expertly poured by our very friendly bartender at Flossmoor Station this past Sunday afternoon. It was a deep, brownish-red with a very thin head and just a touch of haziness.

SMELL: The nose was of a medium intensity and aromas of rye and floral hops came through. Exactly what I would expect a Red Ale to smell like.

TASTE: A big, biting rye flavor hits the palate up front which creates a pleasantly bitter base that gets washed away by a slightly sweet honey finish. The aftertaste, however, is more on the bitter side, but ends up being a very nice balance.

MOUTHFEEL: This is a fairly well-carbonated, nice, dry beer. By mid-pint the dryness builds to a point where it is just a touch abrasive, but nothing that ruins the beer, but some drinkers may have a hard time powering through it.

OVERALL: The Red seems to be a staff favorite at Flossmoor station and there is a good reason why - it is delicious. This is a well-crafted beer and is certainly worth the drive down from the City.

Served on-tap at Bigelos Bistro in a pint glass. Comes out a deep red color, clear, with a little brown tint. Two-finger head that dissipates fairly quickly but leaves a little ringed lacing and a small creamy cap on top.

Nice aroma of slightly citrusy hops with a hint of pine oil. A touch of caramel malt and a note of spiciness.

Nice flavor mix. Reminds me of a rye IPA. Plenty of piney hop bitterness, and some spicy rye-like flavors blending in as well. Enough caramel malt to achieve a nice balance.

Medium consistency in the mouthfeel with some hop oil traits. Very drinkable and enjoyable. Recommended for sure.

Served in my hard earned Wednesday Warrior mug at Medici in Normal, IL. Nice to see a Flossmoor make it downstate.

Appearance is a gorgeous deep red. Just beautiful. A thin ring of froth sits atop that crimson beauty. No active carb.

Aroma of hops comes first but is quickly balanced out with a bready, almost rye-like spice to it. Pleasant, but not striking.

The taste mimics the smell closely. Hops, light rye. A bit of tobacco, like a cigar as a fellow imbiber indicated. The mouthfeel is full. A pleasant creaminess in your mouth.

Overall, a nice change of pace from the endless onslaught of huge IPAs and Stouts. Nothing extraordinary, but a nice drinker.
