A-Deep brownish copper with a medium yellowish tan head that reduced to a thin cap that left nice lace.

S-A powerful blast of the citrusy goodnes of Simcoe hops. Touch of astringency and sweet caramel malt in the background.

T-Sharp bite of spicy, citrus hops with good backing of rich, sweet, caramel malt. Touch of burnt caramel in the finish.

M-Medium body quite sharp with LONG lasting hop bitterness.

D-Good but maybe a bit too spicy and not enough citrus but that is the only negative I really have. Adjust the hop bill, more late addition/dry hopping, and this could be stellar.

I tried this beer back on July 2 2009.

This beer has a very deep murky amber tone to the body. The head is full a rocky pile of beige fluffyness. nice retention and leaves lots of lace. Nose is of sweet creamy hops with some citrus, vegetables, and soft pine notes. I don't get even a hint of the cat pee that some have mentioned. The nose is very inviting. With first sip you get a wave of fresh fruit based hops that are incredibley juicy. Fresh and vibrant and wonderfully mouthfilling. The bitterness isn't harsh at all but acts as a perfect balancer on the back and sides of the tongue. Bitterness does build as you drink but it is welcome so all you hop heads don't worry. Mouthfel is a pleasant fullness with both sweet and bitter notes. Drinkability of this one is off the chart good. This is a spectacular IPA.

I finally was able to track this one down last week. I had been trying to find it forever. The Flossmoor IPA's are always good but I knew this one would be great. Served cold and poured into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 08/20/2009.

Appearance 5 - Near perfect pour. Deep amber in color with a huge amount of white foamy head on top. Really big here with a killer amount of retention. Thoroughly coated the sides and the bottom of the glass as it went down and lots of carbonation visible throughout here as well.

Aroma 4.5 - Rich floral hops leap through the air at the first chance they get. Nice tight orange and pineapple, hints of grapefruit as well come rushing forward. Really very well done here. Warming did bring out much more of the malty backbone, but I have to admit, this one was killer.

Taste 4.5 - Sharp grapefruit and pine notes stick to my teeth and tongue with the first sip. Really powerful bold flavor here. Rolling across the tongue some nice caramel malts start to show their nature, hints of a buttery and bready mix then start to roll forward. Very full flavor here and it faded out oh so very slowly. This was exactly what I was looking for tonight in a nice solid IPA.

Feel 5 - Perfect. Almost full bodied, with a big robust carbonation level and a really big, bad feel to it. This was damn good. Every sip seemed to get better then the one before that. As solid as could possibly be.

Drinkability 4.5 - Superb. ABV well hidden, flavors so big, and so well pronounced you have no trouble at all enjoying every last drop of this nectar.

Overall - I was expecting big things here and I got them. Wonderfully complex and full bodied this was an amazingly solid IPA. Rich citrus flavors balanced effortlessly against buttery sweet malt flavors. I could really not have asked for more. One of the easiest drinking, smoothest IPA's out there.

Loved this beer! It was a nice change from the hop bombs that I've been drinking lately. Poured a nice rust color with a off white foamy head. Smelled like dessert almost. Caramel, citrus, very fruity like. The taste was along the same lines. A sweet hop flavor, again caramel, sweet grapefruit and the slightest bitterness. Very drinkable and very enjoyable. Glad I have one left!

Bottle received in a trade with dukedevil0 thanks for the opportunity!

22oz bomber handsomely dipped in white wax.

Appearance: Dark iced tea with honey corners for the body. Bright 2 finger crown with some retention and good amounts of lacing.

Smell: Loads of caramel malt and some simcoe hops.

Taste: The simcoe hops actually have a bit of a fruity flavor to them. Not quite citrus fruit like a lemon, orange, or lime. More like a slightly red fruit berry like taste. The caramel malt is flawlessly integrated.

Mouthfeel: Nice amount of chewy-ness and medium bodied.

Drinkability: Me like...

This is one of the first IPA's with a strong caramel malt component that I actually enjoyed. Very well integrated.

Big thanks to Dave (dukedevil0) for bringing over a bottle of this. Had it on-tap at pre-DLD but never took notes (was too hyped for crazy sour tasting), and then the stupid Algonquin distribution kept me from getting to a bottle any sooner.

A - A little bit of a gusher. Two fingers of blonde foam with decent retention and tons of sticky glass-coating lacing. Slightly hazed orange-brown with a nice glow to it.

S - Wow - smells like caramel. This wasn't the most hop-forward Flossmoor IPA but the hop presence is pretty much DOA here. Maybe a touch of pine and grapefruit, but very understated. Even though it's not super hoppy any more it still smells pretty good.

T - Apple, caramel, brown sugar, a hint of pine-y hops and some tropical fruit and peach flavors. Again - it's a little old and faded, but it's still quite palatable and doesn't have that slightly rancid old IPA taste to it. Low residual bitterness. Alcohol is very well-hidden, especially considering it's one of the strongest Flossmoor IPAs.

M - The feel is really smooth and soft, with mild carbonation, and dry finish. Thicker medium body and not a ton of residual stickiness. I generally love the Flossmoor feel, and this isn't an exception.

D - I remember this being easy drinking at pre-DLD, and even with the more muted hop flavors that really hasn't changed. Low bitterness, smooth texture and lower carbonation, solid taste make this pretty drinkable stuff.

My scores a little skewed to what I remember this beer tasting like when it was fresh, but it has aged much better than some of the other old Flossmoor IPAs I've tried. I'd recommend waiting for Bryan to do another batch (he did at Rock Bottom, so I know this recipe is written down, unlike some of the other Brewer's Whim series).

Picked up this bottle from Binny's Algonquin.

A: Pours a nice orangy amber with a generous amount of white head that leaves an attractive amount of lacing on the glass.

S: Smells like citrus, hops, grapefruit, pine, some molasses and toffee smells too that might be more prominent because the hops have probably faded (since I had this when it was fresh on tap), however it still smells very pleasant

T: Tastes much more malty than I remember when I had this fresh, the hops are faded bigtime, also some apply flavor, but i remember this being like a super hoppy red ale/ipa and this is just a shadow of it's former self, this just didn't keep over time well at all
Luckily I still have a pretty good idea of what this used to be like, which was major citrus, grapefruit, and hoppy with a nice minor red ale type flavor... the slight bitter finish is still there though

M: Full bodied and well carbonated that makes this have a really nice mouthfeel

D: The drinkability takes a slight hit because of how this faded in a pretty quick amount of time...but fresh this was a super drinkable and sessionable IPA so I can't take the score down too much.

Unfortunately, this beer's prime is long overdue. I'm kicking myself for even holding on to the beer this long. Fresh this was a GREAT IPA, definitely a solid A-/A beer. It's still good but in a different way with the malty presence that would make be only give it a B+.

22 ounce white wax dipped bottle via wkycr4, thanks again Wendall, poured into tulip glass, golden amber color, small white head, some retention and lacing, aroma consists of grapefruit, orange peel, herbs, sappy pine hops, and caramel malt, flavor is piney with some sweetness in the middle, nice bitterness, some apricot in the finish, mangoes and similar fruits come out in the aftertaste later on, medium bodied, dry and bitter mouthfeel, moderatate carbonation, could drink whole bottle, smooth and hidden alcohol, not too dry or sweet, smooth, would drink again, recommended

Purchased at DLD Eve '09 on location. Life was good that day...

Appearance - pours a hazed, dulled orange with shades of darkened peach. A sizable head reduces and stays at a thin finger, leaving good sheets of lace in its wake.

Aroma - citrusy, intense grapefruit.

Taste - biscuity caramel malt base, layered with light sweetness as a prelude. The hops come on fruity and juicy at first, resolving to something more dry, piny and bitter. Avoids any medicinal flavor, stays intense, bitter and tasty. Finishes dry with an arid bitterness.

Mouthfeel - big body for an IPA, very nice. Smooth, almost silky, and a tempered carbonation to let the flavors run free.

Drinkability - dangerously sessionable. I toast this one to it's compatriot brethren lost in a UPS ground skirmish. We hardly knew ye...

Dusky, deep crimson hue. Slim white head.

Gorgeous aromatics, mango, grapefruit, & prickly pine, with caramel undertones.

bitter smack up front on loading into the palate, then a slow glide down...pithy citrus smack, with sweet, malty goodness below.
Beautiful blend, with non-stop blast of hops to the lips and tongue, yum, yum.

Medium-bodied, spicy flash, bitterness well met with sweet, toffee-ish malt backbone. Lightly spicy finish.

Great stuff. Thanks for sharing the bottle, Dean!

Bland white, two finerhead that recedes to afilm o' foam throughout all 22 oz. Deep ruby red amber with copper highlights. Orange rind hops and caramel malts combine to give this IPA a gummy bear aroma... and I love it! They must've used a boatload of malt and hops in the brewing of this beer. There isan insane malty, caramel, and sweet bread. This combines with some syrupy and resiny orange hops. The overall flavor is a bitter, but still pretty sweet gummy candy. The palae is chewy, warm, and sweet. But all combined as one. Not a lot of separation. Very easy to sip and sometimes swallow whole beer.

This is a very unique tasting IPA. A bit of a swerve from the expected hop bomb.

Glowing copper with orange hues. Vigorous pour yeilds a thick head with big bubbles. Nice bubbly lace stays for the duration, with nice clumps of lace sticking to my snifter. Wow, nice burst of citrus and tropical fruit in the nose. Warming brings in some nice sweet candy sugars and a hint of butterscotch. Taste is a nice balence of assetive brown sugar like malt sweetness and piney, fruity hops that smack the malts back down into there place. Lingering light bready malt sweetness intertwines with with hop flavors to finish things out. The body is not a syrupy or thick as I would have expected for an almost 9% brew, but right in line anyhow. Drinkability is rediculous here, I keep wanting another sip. Dangerous. A must try for hopheads. Another stand out brew for Floosmoor Station.

Thanks DavidEddie for the fantatic extra here. You rock!

Appearance: Pours a clear, deep, dark amber body with a frothy, heartily bubbly, whitish head.

Smell: Aromatic, redolent, predominately hoppy nose with large notes of luscious, juice-dripping tropical fruits with some lesser sweetish malt accents in the background.

Taste: Fairly sturdy malt foundation with touches of pale and caramel maltiness. A fair amount of sweetness ushers in the strong hop profile -- Ruby Red grapefruit, oranges, fresh herbs, and, perhaps, even a touch of Golden Lippens mangoes and gooey pine resin. The malt base tries its damnedest to reemerge, but the hops manage to cow it. Shimkos' Simcoes finishes with a dessert-like dryness and a pleasingly long, staunch bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is a tad oily.

Drinkability: Recommended! Flossmoor regularly hits home runs with their IPA's. Even considering the bold bitterness and asserted 8.7% ABV, this beer has a surprisingly high drinkability, as it's just downright quaffable.

Bottle into red wine glass, thanks to Dev (buckeyesox) for another phenomenal beer. Drank from around 50 degrees and up.

Pours dark copper, very clear, with a gorgeous, dense one-finger light-khaki head on top. Supremely persistent, would not disappear and took forever just to settle into a dense cap. Epic lacing.

One of the best smelling IPA's I've had - I got whiffs of it from a foot away as soon as I popped the bottle, and it refused to go away the whole time I was drinking it. Grapefruit rind bites at the nostrils, beautiful sweet, clean, vivid tropical citrus pairs with a bit of hop bite and a firm malt body underneath that is caramel sweet but also just a bit toasty. You can tell this one's fresh.

Taste is very nice, extremely balanced. The tongue is greeted with a nice, sweet, citrusy, introduction up front, gaining some bright tropical fruit notes mid palate as the simcoes really come out to shine, and ramps into a piny bitterness on the finish the finish that is fantastically satisfying without being at all overwhelming. Finish is lingering light bitterness, a bit piny, though tropical fruit, citrus rind, and even some lightly toasty malt echoes through as well. Delicious - would likely be a 4.2 or 4.3 if such subtleties were possible.

Mouthfeel is creamy, full, rich and tingly. Excellent.

Drinkability is superb. Lightly bitter but always balanced, the hops shine in this one while letting the malt take the stage in a few spots as well. This is another one that confirms for me how much freshness matters for IPA's. Great beer.

Poured from 22oz bomber w/ white tax into Duvel tulip.

A - Dark copper color, mirky, white head which leaves some nice lacing behind.

S - Fruit punch nose, really good, tropical fruits all over the place. I get lots of pineapple and oranges with just a small hint of bitter citrus on the end. Not much bitterness at all on the nose. Is is probably my favorite nose on any IPA I've ever had.

T - I get the tropical fruit sweetness but mostly a wonderful hoppy bitterness. This is a really great-tasting IPA, I'm impressed.

M - Perfect carbonation, light-medium body, and very crisp and refreshing. This is an awesome IPA that's all gone by now (so I hear). Glad I have one bomber left!

22oz Flossmoor bomber with white wax, part of a DLD trade this year, maybe this is the freshest Flossmoor IPA available at the time. The beer is very clear, light copper color, thick slab of foam. This IPA smells really fruity, like papaya and citrus, you can also sense a strong pale malt base. The taste is sweet in a tropical fruit way, with some alcohol burn and a little bitterness in the aftertaste. The same light carbonation and smooth mouthfeel of other Flossmoor IPA's, very tasty as always.
